A great thank you to all of you who made it possible for this event to happen! I learned a lot and will continue to do so with all of the videos I haven't yet had the time to watch. Looking forward to the conference next year! :)
BTW: the people from DV could tell that me that if you use the MT client from Google Translate, the part for which you use GT is of course send to Google. That means I would certainly advice against using GT MT when doing a pretranslate, because you might send your whole text to GT. That's a serious breach of the NDA.

So, should we --if we have not already-- prepare ourselves better to offer editing services?

My idea is we're already doing editing if we use CAT tools. So I don't expect a drastic change, only a gradual change.

Actually, information technology always is about gradual changes. It only looks as if it our drastic changes, because it's only after a certain time of development that the general audiances discovers it.

Virtual conferences like this one also exist since a long time, but I didn't join because the connections and programs weren't good enough yet. I tried it some years ago, and I didn't use it again. But this year I used it for a client, for an online meeting, and it worked very well. That's one of the reasons I joined this conference afterwards. The advantages to live conferences are big, for me it feels as a drastic change, but it was in the making since, maybe, 10 years or so.

Cetainly in these days, with online work, apps (are always only), the mistakes in OpenSSL and some names I don't mention, we should certainly be carefully not to install leaks which lead to breaches of the NDA's. It's not as if we have some package of paper in a closet which only a burglar can get his hands on.

I remember having a similar discussion on MT a few years ago and I remember the feeling was that MT was the worst thing ever invented.

Mmm... it might put us out of a job at a certain moment. But it will happen gradually. It means, in my view, that you shouldn't go about telling people to become a translator.

We are in the cloud at the moment. I might have done my first translations in the cloud in 2005. That's almost 10 years ago. So it's really old for me, and that translation agency was on the brink of new things. But, guess what: I almost never get a job from them, and not because they don't want too. For some or other reasons, their clients went away.

Each invention was a worry, and it's only because some people were worried, that it didn't become worse as it did. The car is a good example: it IS still a worry. The Dutch Prince Bernhard visited a health instituion once, and 1 out of 3 people in a wheelchair were victims of road accidents. At the moment he saw that something had to be done about that, because at that time nobody really cared about traffic safety.
