you can try the software for free for 30 days (please check SDL Trados website), but there is no legal free version of this CAT.

Hi Long,
There's no free software in this world. You just have to buy it as it is a means of assisting the people who developed it. They put in long hours to produce it.
It is best to collaborate with Proz.com to join others in group buys which sell Trados every month at a discount.
It is absolutely satisfactory once you've bought it as the real version is still far better than the demo one.
Hope this helps you. | |

You can use the trial version of CafeTran: www.cafetran.com
It handles Studio packages perfectly.
However, there are restrictions to the size of any embedded Translation Memories:
Without a license file, the free copy of CafeTran Espresso that you download will run forever — but with the following limitations: You won’t be able to work with TM files that are larger than 1000 TU’s in size (in total), and you will not be able to make use of glossaries that are larger than 500 terms (in total). To remove those limitations, you need a license file generated specifically for your computer.

Try these URLs:
http://www.omegat.org/ (free)
http://www.my-across.net/en/ ("free")
http://wordfast.com/ (free for small jobs)
The site www.wordfast.org no longer exists -- it was for a pirate version of Wordfast.
The original question from 2009 was for a free version of Trados. The only free versions of Trados are torrented (pirated) versions. A replier tried to indicate other programs that he believed are similar to Trados, but in actual fact none of the programs mentioned (OmegaT, Across, Wordfast) are similar to Trados.

The mentioned site was run by the italian company http://www.logos.net/. The version they made available was WordFast 3.35x and it was not a pirated version, but a free version quite outdated for that time.
I want to make clear that I didn't (and don't) recommend pirated software.

Back in 2009 my post read:

I have enough time in this trade to know what is similar to Trados and what is not. It is clear that at that time I was mentioning alternatives to TRADOS, not look-alikes.
Nowadays, I would suggest MateCAT as a very good alternative to TRADOS, being free, online, and able to handle its proprietary formats (sdlxliff, ttx).
Saludos
