Dear colleagues,
I'm considering moving to the UK and I would like to get your advice about which city to choose (except London, too expensive).
My criteria:
- more than 120.000 inhabitants
- university with language faculty (ideally for translators and interpreters, for training opportunities)
- attractive place to live in

The University of Bristol currently offers an MA translation (possible distance learning) but no interpreting training and the University of Bath (half an hour by train from Bristol) offers an MA in translation and interpreting.
As for Bristol, I moved there three years ago from Paris (so the competition was steep) and have never had a single regret since.

Maybe it is a bit small considering your criteria, but I can assure you a very active student life, and you are 15min train from Bristol if necessary (though you have everything you need in Bath).
Uni has several halls to live in, its accomodation services will organise everything for you. I was staying at "Thornbank Gardens" btw. You can also rent a house and ask for roomies.
It is a cute, cozy town, give it a try! I have very positive memories on this period!

I recently visited Manchester, and there are PLENTY of offices to let. Private houses also seem not so expensive, as seen in various agency. Just yesterday night I did a quick search on the Manchester university Website and found art, healthcare and creative courses, as well as physics and mathematics, but no languages.

For living and things to do, my home town of Glasgow is not bad and reasonably priced compared to London (if you can handle grey skies 95% of the time). There were at least 3 universities the last time I looked (Strathclyde, Glasgow and Caledonian). The city has a long established Italian community (I was in my teens before I realised that Coia and Fratelli weren't indigenous Scottish surnames!) and I'm sure you'd feel welcome.

There is a lot going on in this city and there are loads of cheap options for offices, no doubt.
Salford Quays, a new area belonging to the big city of Salford (part of Greater Manchester) is on a roll with new things happening every day. Loads of companies have moved into their new state of the art offices, like the BBC, ITV and many film companies, advertising and marketing agencies. Second phase of Salford Quays is on its way and that promises to gather more interest from companies. That can only be good for business. Salford Quays is about 10 minutes away from Manchester's city centre.
Manchester is a lovely city, very multi-cultural, and small enough for you to walk around without even needing to get public transportation. Loads of festivals, nice architecture, very good Italian restaurants (Jamie Oliver just opened his restaurant in the city!) and from other gastronomies.
Not too far way, about 1 hour distance tops, you have great places to visit whether you are in the mood for traditional shopping, like in Chester, or if you are more of an outdoor kind of person, with the lovely Pennines and the Peak District. You also have Liverpool close by which gives you equal cultural and educational options.

Bath is practically a suburb of Bristol (13 miles/20-ish mins away) so in this way, you'd get two for the price of one.
I've never been to Bath, but I adore Bristol, easily my favourite city in England.
The only place I would discourage you from is Birmingham (they do an MA in Translation) but it is a truly horrible place (in my opinion).

Mr Ty! I spent a portion of my youth near Birmingham, and liked it very much. Mind you, never lived there as an adult, so I may have rose-tinted specs on.
The Birmingham University translation MA is rubbish, though, don't even think about it. It's just tacked on to a department full of TEFL specialists. I've got ten more days, then my dissertation is finished and I'm free of the damn place forever, hoorah!

I went to college there (St Philips Sixth Form) and for a time (my early 20s) it was my stomping ground...but it has to be said, it isn't the most attractive city, and the OP did request:
- attractive place to live in
There are plenty of positive adjectives I could use to describe B'ham, but "attractive" just isn't one of them...and now you have exposed the only Translation & Interpreting course there as a shambles, it definitely isn't a place the asker should consider!
And as for the accent.....

I like living in Birmingham, but I wouldn't recommend it to outsiders. Go to Manchester instead, it's a lovely city!

Bath Uni is probably the most attractive of the bunch with a good name but is more expensive (and possibly more competitive to be admitted) than some universities further north with a good reputation for translation/interpreting such as Leeds and Salford.
For freelance conference interpreting work, the closer you are to London, the more assignments you will be offered.
For public service interpreting, any major city with its lawcourts and police force will do. Am not sure of the demand for ITEN but the National Register of Public Service Interpreters (NRPSI) may offer more info.
For freelance translation, location is immaterial. ▲ Collapse

Actually, Manchester University does offer a translation and interpreting course. Salford University also has one. It's a great student city, and a thriving, multicultural place to live.

The nicest places to live are in South Manchester, Chorlton for instance, but you will pay for the location.
