WALS is a large database of structural (phonological, grammatical, lexical) properties of languages gathered from descriptive materials (such as reference grammars) by a team of more than 40 authors (many of them the leading authorities on the subject). It has 141 maps and a total of 2650 languages represented.

It has 141 maps and a total of 2650 languages represented.

You can search for different traits of your language and find out whether they are common, and in which part of the world, or rare.

The printed edition of the atlas weighs about 4 kilograms. This online version has all the maps and will get updates as research results comes in. ▲ Collapse
