Since Trados will not work with non-formatted .txt files (as far as I can tell with my attempts), does anybody know an easy way to convert .txt files to Word or another format for use with Trados?

Yes: go into Word, open the text file and then save it as a Word file.
Should do the trick.

Sorry, I should have been more clear. I need a way to convert large numbers of files at the same time. If I get 50 .txt files from a customer I don't want to open each of those individually and save them as Word files.

You might want to try and find some freeware file converter like Convert Doc. Don't know if it allows mass conversions, but it might be a start.
Otherwise you might try to change general settings on your pc for handling txt files, so they won't open in NotePad but in Word.
It's a workaround, but it might work.

Select your files in the upper window.
In the Extension (11) area, choose fixed and type doc in the box next to it. This should do the trick.
A copy of your original files is recommended just in case...

I have tried the utility Philippe refers to and IT WORKS!
It 's a good way to convert large number of files and to deal with loooong mixed or unformatted docs.

Thank you for the link. Unfortunately, it does not convert the files but only changes the extension. I still get an error from Trados that it could not read the file.

I have used BRU to safely rename rtfs to docs, but indeed it doesn't actually convert files, so my suggestion is useless in your situation...

Hi all,
What most users don't know is that this is actually already a built in function in Office! At least in the recent versions (Office 2000/2003).
So no need for third-party downloads!
I only have a Swedish version here, but it's located at this path:
Start Menu > Create New Office Document > Other Documents > Conversion Wizard.
It will take care of txt batches, as well as some other common formats.

I have XP Pro and cannot find this Wizard. What is the path in Swedish, please?

It is part of Office 2003 (maybe earlier versions too) and Jan's tip is very interesting.
Another way to access this wizard if you removed the default shortcut New office Document in the Start menu of Windows:
in Word 2003, click File>New. In the right pane that appears, click On my computer>Other Documents tab>File conversion wizard.
To put back the shortcut New Office document in the Start menu>All programs:
In an application of Office, click Help>Detect... See more It is part of Office 2003 (maybe earlier versions too) and Jan's tip is very interesting.

It's the "Windows" start menu you need.
From there, select "Create New Office Document" (should be near the top of the menu).
This will open a panel of various sub-menus. By default you will likely be presented with the "Standard" tab. The tab next to this is the "Other Documents" tab Jan describes.
There are various "Wizards" located here, including (on my system, XP Pro), the "Batch Conversion ... See more I followed the path Jan described and it's definitely there (thanks, Jan!).
