Hi,

I am very interested in the MA Translation Studies distance learning course at the University of Portsmouth.

As the course administrators told me, students have to translate in both language directions. So, I would have to translate from German, my mother tongue, into English. I have been working as a translator for 3+ years, but I have never done any translations from my mother tongue into my second language (except for some non-business purposes).

I did indeed come across this language direction issue when doing the 'Specialised Translation' unit. I found that students are put into groups (communicating via email) to produce a translation of a specific text, and that some weeks this was German>English and some weeks English>German (pretty much half-and-half). I am currently on this course, but my first language is English and my second language is German.

I did indeed come across this language direction issue when doing the 'Specialised Translation' unit. I found that students are put into groups (communicating via email) to produce a translation of a specific text, and that some weeks this was German>English and some weeks English>German (pretty much half-and-half). I believe this is due to the mix of first/second languages among students. There is also a mix of mother tongue English and German tutors to mark the work/give feedback etc. These weekly assignments are just exercises though, and you were able to choose your language direction for the actual assignments that contributed to your grade (as it seems to be understood that most people prefer to translate into their first language).

I can't vouch for all of the units, but I'm also doing the 'Translation Project' and know that you can choose your language direction there too.
