Till now, the limestone karst works like a sponge: a multitude of sinkholes and communicating pipes created a labyrinthic system of unterground rivers.

BTW sorry to burst your bubble, but exactly the same article is available in German
https://www.showcaves.com/german/explain/Karst/Estavelle.htm...
and I have the nagging feeling that it's the GERMAN VERSION that is the original version.

Another mechanism is based on the different specific gravity of salt water and fresh water. In communicating pipes, the water level is normally at the same level, but when sea water with a higher specific gravity is filled in on one side, the water level is lower despite a state of equilibrium. A cave with an undersea outflow and an additional outflow just above sea level can use this effect in a special way. The karstic water level sinks below sea level due to the above-ground outflow, which causes sea water to flow into the cave system at the underwater entrance.
That would explain "pipes" in kart terrain. You could loosely call underground canals in karst "pipes" but that is definitively not the right terminology.
If these "pipes" look like "connected / communicating pipes" to this journalist it's because often (but not always) these canals look like a grid once the whole cave is mapped.
a translation? A rather approximative one ...
The word "pipe" is normally used for man-made "pipes", I have never seen it used for underground canals/passages in karst terrain (and I can't find ANY occurrence on the Web of "pipe" being used to mean "underground river in karst terrain")

You can get several sinkholes draining in the same underground river/canal - that's what they are talking about - there are no natural "pipes" in karst.
