Hi all,

During the course of my work I often need to search for a word or phrase in the same websites, and it can get very tedious going through that process many, many times per day. Well, since I know a thing or two about programming, I threw something together that has been a great help to me this past year. If you're interested, check it out: https://github.com/miloir/Helpy_Search/

That page has the source code and a detailed bit of text about how to use it. The download link is at the bottom of this post. To summarize:

1) Have Helpy running
2) Select some text in any program
3) Press Ctrl+Spacebar to have Helpy automatically open your browser with urls you specified in the config file and your selection inserted into them.

The config file is just a list of urls you want to open, like a google search page.
e.g. a google search for turtles might look like this: https://www.google.com/search?q=Turtles
You can take that link, replace the Turtle search word with "|e|" -- https://www.google.com/search?q=|e| -- and paste that into the config file. Now when you select some text you can search google for your selection instead of just turtles.

You can have multiple of these urls, here are some that I have:

http://mymemory.translated.net/s.php?q=|e|&sl=it-IT&tl=en-GB
http://www.proz.com/search/?term=|e|&from=ita&to=eng&es=1
http://www.wordreference.com/iten/|e|
http://translate.google.com/#it/en/|e|

(by the way, those are pipes, not L's -- |e|)

So now I can search 4 websites for anything I need with only 2 key presses.

I hope I've explained it well enough, it's actually quite a simple little program, but let me know if you have questions.

Hi Christophe,

I didn't know those were around, thanks for showing them to me. I guess we can add my little program among the list then for those who are looking for something super simple

Best,
Isaac

… and "free." I've been puzzled by Sam's little problem - http://www.proz.com/forum/machine_translation_mt/258734-any_freeware_desktop_translators_for_paid_google_service.html - since he started that topic, and I wonder if you can help him out. Or ask your fellow-Githubbers to help.

Cheers,

Hans (who only joined the Githubbers for the drink-ups, so I can't ask them)
