I regularly send a zip file with my translation memories to one of two pen drives permanently "attached" to my computer, where I also keep the file I am currently working on. Keeping your data on an external drive that is always connected exposes it to many of the same dangers that it faces on your hard drive, probably the only exception being a mechanical failure specific to your hard drive. As long as your external drive is mounted to your computer, it is functionally the same as an internal one and is equally susceptible to malware (including ransomware), environmental damage (in the event of a power surge I would assume it can get fried like the rest of your hardware, and of course there's things like fires and floods) and theft. The former is largely (not completely!) avoided by just keeping your drives unplugged when you don't need them, and the latter two by keeping a remote backup (either in a different building or on a remote server). There's no completely safe solution, but depending on the nature and importance of your data you can choose the best place to keep backups and how often to make copies (and how many versions to archive).

[Edited at 2016-09-11 10:48 GMT] LMAO I interpreted it as which would you spend a bit extra on. Monitor was my answer. Makes option e that much sharper. | | | Ilan Rubin (X) Russian Federation Local time: 08:57 Russian to English

[Edited at 2016-09-11 10:48 GMT] I would think the liver is the most important part for many translators... | | | Mario Chavez (X) Local time: 01:57 English to Spanish + ... It IS incredibly silly, and Mr. Lamensdorf hit it in the nail | Sep 11, 2016 |
Sophie Dzhygir wrote: The question is which part is more important. Sure they're all important, but some are more than others. For instance, for us translators, audio and video cards are of little importance (whereas they're of great importance for other types of users). Except maybe if you're a subtitler. I don't care too much for hard disk space either, because modern computers always offer more than I can use and there are plenty of possibilities for external storage. The most important to my eyes is CPU and RAM, to keep my computer fast despite all programms. That's the reason why I change my PC from time to time, but I've not changed my monitor, keyborad and mouse for ages. As long as they work, they'll do the job. PS: same about your comparison, José, there are definitely body parts more important than others. Although I would not be happy to lose a limb, you can definitely live without a leg or an arm, or even without one lung out of two, but you can't live without a heart or a brain. The question is beyond silly; it is stupid. Complex systems, such as a human body or a computer, require all of their parts to function as intended. A hand separated or dismembered from its body can do nothing. Same with the CPU, the RAM chips or the monitor: they are useless if they're separated from the whole they're built to make up.

Keyboard, of course. As regards CPU, RAM and hard drive, practically all modern computers have enough of that to ensure fast operation in those programs, which translators commonly use.
