Where is the option "I can't because I'm not a paying Member"? Mar 4, 2008

I wanted to participate to the current one, and then I saw I was not allowed to...

Does voting count? Mar 4, 2008

I voted "yes" although I have never submitted an entry of my own. (I started one once but never was satisfied with the result.)

I have, however, voted in (I think) three of the contests. In my languages (English and Spanish), that's a lot of work!

One of these days a contest will come along when I'm in a slow period. I'm glad to say, I don't have many of those! I would love to submit an entry. I miss the feedback I used to get from my professors when I was a student.

Julio Cortazar Mar 4, 2008

Gave it a try at the text of Cortazar. No easy at all to translate into whatever language.
I wonder on what basis these translations are graded? (semantics, syntax,style...).

Other Mar 4, 2008

I have voted, but I've never submitted a translation - because they're always literary texts. The reasons for this are pretty obvious and also understandable, but the texts are way out of my area of expertise.

I've submitted translations, but as Marie-Hélène mentions the texts are always literary type texts and I rarely if ever translate literary material. In spite of lack of experience with literary works, I submitted a text in the last contest and it was voted out in the first round of voting! I didn't take that as an offense, however, but rather as a sign of the good judgement the voters were using.

It might be a good idea to have various categories in the contest to give legal, technical, scientific translators, etc a chance to participate, or perhaps the type of text could be changed from year to year..?

Good idea to propose different categories Mar 4, 2008

A sound suggestion! I imagine many ProZians have a strong literary bent but how many of us actually translate literature? As an aside, a couple of years back I took part in a British literary translation competition and was astounded at how difficult this is.

I also agree with Elisabeth and Bohy about the "not a paying member" option. Time permitting, I would love to enter but as a non-paying member I don't qualify.

Yes, twice up to now. Mar 4, 2008

I've submitted entries in the last two. My first entry, like John's, was bumped out in the first round. My next attempt was a little more successful, making it through the qualifying round but with only a few points. Still, I was chuffed!

This time I have a draft done but the deadline for entries in my language pair is tomorrow and (happily) I've got work to do. I'll probably have to be content with voting only this time.

BTW literary translation isn't my field, either, but it's still enjoyable and worth the effort especially when other members take the time to give feedback on every single entry that passes the qualifying round in the pair. Such was the case with Goodwords in the last contest but one; the contest I was bumped out of so I was deprived of her valuable contribution. (I missed your participation in the last contest, Goodwords, but I guess you were just too busy!)

Anyway, back to work. Maybe I'll have time to work on my entry before tomorrow and submit something that's not wholly embarrassing!

Erm... Mar 4, 2008

... does"usually too busy working" ring a bell?
John's suggestion about different categories is excellent though; I'd be much more inclined to take part if the text were more in my line - lit stuff takes so long and you can never be quite sure that it's as good or meaningful as the original.

Second or third time submitting Mar 4, 2008

Sadly, except for once, each time mine has been the only submission in my language.

I too agree with John (Cutler) to have the contest in various categories or have a different category each time.

The literary pieces offered so far, as interesting and challenging as they have been, neither reflect nor really showcase the real-life translations most of us do.

And why is the contest not open to unpaid members again?

I've not seen my pairs Mar 4, 2008

If I came across my specialist pairs, Portuguese to English, I may well have a bash, but I've not seen them yet. Are these pairs in the contest this time around?
