I don't think a job that is simply prestigious or easy would suit me. If I'm going to be happy with a job, it has to be something I enjoy, something that makes me feel a sense of accomplishment and that I'm doing something worthwhile.
At this point in my life, if I could do anything and didn't have to worry about money and other "practical" matters, I would want to work as a ranger in a national park. My parents started taking my brother and I to parks for vacation when I was 5 year... See more I don't think a job that is simply prestigious or easy would suit me. If I'm going to be happy with a job, it has to be something I enjoy, something that makes me feel a sense of accomplishment and that I'm doing something worthwhile.
At this point in my life, if I could do anything and didn't have to worry about money and other "practical" matters, I would want to work as a ranger in a national park. My parents started taking my brother and I to parks for vacation when I was 5 years old, and I've been to so many of them since then and I can't tell you how much I love those places and what they mean to me. To have a job working in places like that and using my time to helping the parks and the people that visit them would be incredible. And being outside and being active sounds a lot better than the 9 hours I spend every day in a gray cubicle in the suburbs. I know it's hard work, that it's not a glamorous job, but their office is a lot nicer than mine! ▲ Collapse

Hi everybody and thank you for participating!
I am in a position now, after 14 years in this profession, in which I can afford to choose which jobs to accept and which to refuse.
Sometimes I receive really challenging but at the same time extremely interesting/prestigious jobs, and I feel divided:
One part of my brain is all happy about the new challenge and ready to start "fighting for words";

While the other one says: "Oh man, can't you just relax a little bit and accept a whatever regular, perhaps boring, but easy job? My neurons are dead and don't need any more stress!"

Absolutely no question here: I would always choose the most interesting job, the most stimulating one, all other things being equal (and if it didn't take up all my time, so much the better!)

With this survey I was referring only to translation jobs, not to all existing jobs in the world

Well, the poll wasn't clear to me, because I thought you were referring to any type of job, not necessarily translation!

...I would stay home and translate my favorite novels, just for the pleasure of doing so. Also, I would translate for some non-profit organizations I support.
I do not care about prestige. I feel fortunate enough to be able to earn my living by doing what I like best!

because the least effort suits me. Easiness is very relative anyway and is usually related with the fields one is comfortable with.
I make a living and I don't work for fun, fame or public recognition unless it helps getting more business.
However, there is no doubt that I enjoy (from an intellectual perspective) challenging projects more than easy ones. But those feelings have generally little to do with the annual bottom line.
Overall, I don't try to avoid easiness, I strive ... See more because the least effort suits me. Easiness is very relative anyway and is usually related with the fields one is comfortable with.

If money wouldn't play any role, I would decide to take jobs which are stimulating challenges for me, giving me better insight into my special fields and make me enjoy work. Yes, these would be time-consuming and prestigous jobs - and unfortunately quite utopic, but we may have dreams, don't we?

At one time I had an easy but unrewarding job. But I worked hard in other areas and looked forward to the day when I could quit the job and become independent.
When that day came, I quit and never looked back.
Now my current job can sometimes be very time-consuming, but I have learned to get that under control so I have plenty of time to enjoy.
As far as the prestige part is concerned, well, that is still pending!

I agree with Erik. If money wasn’t so important, I would definitely take those assignments that only relate to my areas of expertise, but I am relatively new to the business and I can’t decide on what to translate yet. I hope to do it in the future. What a pity!

I've had both, prestigious time consuming and unmotivating jobs,
I think I prefer a balance: a prestigious job but one that would let me enjoy my home and doing other things. That is, unless I love my workplace and position so much that I'd be willing to stay in for 8 or more hours, it depends on the satisfaction I get.
Money is an issue, as many have mentioned, you come to a point in your career where you feel you deserve more than what you are offered.
