Vacations are one of those areas that I think we freelancers find to be a thorn in our sides. It’s often times one of those situations where, if you’re working you haven’t got the time to go on holiday, and if you’re not working you haven’t got the money! I have a wife that isn’t a freelancer though, so she sees things differently. I have a wife that isn’t a freelancer though, so she sees things differently. Long about April or May, she starts diligently surfing the Internet looking for affordable holiday packages for a family of 5. Her sheer diligence has led us to have some great vacations in the past few years, which has been good for the whole family. ▲ Collapse | | | Reed James Chile Local time: 22:52 Tag (2005 óta) spanyol - angol February is vacation month in Chile | May 1, 2007 |
I always go on vacation for two weeks in the month of February. There is a time that the freelancer has to draw the line between work and relaxation. It is true that if one is absent from the translation scene, one will miss out on translation work. Nevertheless, I can't stress how beneficial it is to my work after two weeks of rest! | | | Vaccation... a dream... | May 1, 2007 |
Well, somehow I've not been able to go on a vaccation for past one and a half years. I went to France in November-December 2005. Ever since I've been working without any vaccation. And now I'm going on vaccation on the 3rd of May but then there's so much to complete before I leave that I wish I could stay. Moreover, it's the wrong season to go where I'm going. Too hot. And now I'm going on vaccation on the 3rd of May but then there's so much to complete before I leave that I wish I could stay. Moreover, it's the wrong season to go where I'm going. Too hot. I'm going to Gujarat... meeting friends... I couldn't postpone it any longer. And it was really difficult to get the ticket so I took the opportunity. I think I'll have to work for a day or two and I'm equipped with a laptop and a datacard so I can work anywhere. Thank god for technology. Seriously though, I'd like to head to mountains in this season... that was my original plan. A couple of days in Gujarat in March/ April and then a few days in mountains in May-June. Anyways, at least I can go to Gujarat. I promised someone that I'll take lots of photographs. And it will be fun, I think. ▲ Collapse

Sometimes I feel I am so exhausted that I can't really think, then I leave everything and run away until I get rest and re-concider everything again then I can say my vacation ended!! Thank you for sharing, Best regards, Salam | | | I voted other ... | May 1, 2007 |
I take short breaks, rather than long holidays, whenever I feel I need one. That is usually a 4 or 5 day break (including a weekend) every 8 weeks or so. I usually fly back "home" to the UK, where I was born and attended primary school, as going back to South Africa isn't practical for that length of time. Works for me as I don't like long holidays. | | | Nesrin Egyesült Királyság Local time: 03:52 angol - arab + ... Schools rule! | May 1, 2007 |
For the past few years, holidays have been scheduled for 3 weeks (husband's annual leave) in the period between 20 July and 5 September (kids' school holidays). | | | Family dictates | May 1, 2007 |
Might be interesting to study the correlation between those responding the family dictates and those who are freelancers in translations - I suspect there may be a link...

A legitimate question it is, but for how long do we plan to see paraphrases of the same polls over and over again? I believe we have chewed on each and every imaginable angle of freelancer schedule and scheduling. I believe we have chewed on each and every imaginable angle of freelancer schedule and scheduling. Isn't there something fresh sitting in the query? Hi Irene! I don't know how many years the quick polls have been running for, but imagine having one new poll every 2-3 days - every single time, the poll has to cover a completely different aspect of the translator's life, practices, habits etc. How long do you think this can be kept up for? I see no problem with slightly repetitive polls. 1) The translators who took part in polls in 2004 may not be the same ones who take part today, 2) The same translators may change their habits and points of view and 3) A slightly different wording may lead to a completely different result and different discussion. It must be because I'm fairly new to the polls/forum here, but I really like these kind of polls. For the same reason, I don't know if they are 'repeats' of past polls.
