Hi,

I've been sent a translation by an agency and in the PO they have written:

"Please use Workbench (no Tageditor)"

What does this mean?

I usually use Trados 2014. Is this something I can do on Trados?

Thanks,

Mirella

Well, May 14, 2014

technically speaking, Trados 2014 is a very sophisticated version of TagEditor. It may be that they want you to send them uncleaned Word files, which can only be made using older versions of Trados/Workbench - 2007, for example. Workbench hasn`t been there for quite a while actually - even Trados 2009 does not have it.

Thanks!

I have used sdl legacy converter before. Do you think if I convert the xliff to .doc through that it would have the same result?

better use SDL Legit!, you will get unclean files exactly like those of Trados 7.
Legacy Converter doesn't give you exactly the same output.

good luck!

Crowd? May 14, 2014

Good grief, if you want to know what someone means, don't ask the crowd, ask the PERSON who said it.

Thanks for that. I had of course contacted the agency but seeing as they sent me the translation just before closing time by the time I got in touch with them it was after office hours and I was rather hoping to start it this evening.

I had of course hoped that, this being a professional translator's forum, it was understood that we are all intelligent people who know that asking the 'person who said it' is the best course of action...

... they want you to translate, or maybe review (as you said they sent you a translation), the file using Microsoft Word and Trados Workbench.

Perhaps you could clarify what they have sent you as you have a few options to mimic this request without using Workbench.

  1. If they sent you a translation (a bilingual Word DOC) then you can handle this in Studio and send them the finished file from Studio when you save the target document
  2. If they sent you a file for translation, then you should use SDL LegIt! (a free application on the SDL OpenExchange) to convert the file to a Bilingual DOC file first. Then handle it in Studio as for 1.

TagEditor is another "old" translation environment from Trados. Trados created Bilingual DOC files using MSWord and Workbench; TagEditor created Bilingual TTX files using TagEditor and Workbench. This article might be useful for you too : http://wp.me/p2xDjK-um

Paul

Action May 14, 2014

"...it was understood that we are all intelligent people who know that asking the 'person who said it' is the best course of action..."

Believe me, I've seen many cases where not all the people here are so intelligent. Actually, asking the 'person who said it' is the not only best course of action, it is the only proper course of action. And if the client is not available for consultation, then let them absorb the delay, because consultation and clarifications can always be needed.

Thanks, Mirella... May 15, 2014

...for submitting this situation to the Forum section. And, also, thanks to Paul for giving us the best solution.
Now I know how to deal with it.
Thanks to all!
