Only a couple of short comic strips, but really enjoyed the challenge of trying to convey the same meaning and effect above all in English as was in the original language!
In texts like this it's amazing just how much there is in the way of cultural reference/baggage etc. that you really have to work round/into the target text, sometimes in a completely different way - anyone read Asterix in the various languages?

I'm a comic book fan myself, and I also translate some animes and cartoons (which my 8 years old son loves, and that's the best reward!).
Also I think it makes you work another part of the brain, in contrast to other more "serious" translations.
Plus, there a lot of comics and manga for adults, which would be a good challenge to translate, definitely is a great field to work.

Why is it assumed that someone would only do this "for kicks"?
If a client wants to pay me to translate comic books, that's fine by me. Why wouldn't it be?

It's a job, not a hobbie, and much better than many projects that I've made. I'll take anyday a comic or a cartoon over a manual or a corporate video. Most of the time they pay better and the work is more valued.

No, I never have, and yes, I'd like to try, for the challenge.
One of my students is translating a graphic novel for her translation thesis, and I look forward to serving on her thesis committee. I expect to learn a lot.

Comic books are very popular in Italy.
My job was to translate them (female detective stories) with a view to them being used as film scripts. Half way through the first one, the client remembered to tell me that the dialogue needed to fit into the existing speech bubbles for the first stage of the process - not at all easy.
They also wanted detailed descriptions of all the locations and character profiles, which was a new challenge - but attracted favourable comments.

In one story, though, I missed one frame and it just happened to be the one that unravelled the mystery, leading me to mis-identify the culprit. Moral: read the whole story first!

Just like translating subtitles, I believe that translating comics is closely related to writing poetry. Leave everything out that isn't vital and make it flow like the words had always just been there, waiting.
Anthea Bell and Derek Hockridge definitely range very high up on my most-admired-people-on-the-planet list!
And the guys who translate Donald Duck into German (Lustige Taschenbücher, I love them) also often come up with very nice ideas.

Would certainly do it again. It was one book-length adventure of Zorro. Great challenge to teach a translator how to be economic, precise, and natural with her wording
BTW, glad to see that the Nightmare on Poll Street is over. Even if anyone announced that the poll discussion would be back to its normal format, I seem to have missed it.

I would LOVE to translate comics and children's books, too. I've never had the opportunity except for one children's book, but it would be right up my alley. At the moment I'm translating two novels, and I love that, too.
So, if anybody's looking for someone to translate comics/kids' books from Portuguese to English, I'm your girl!

I would imagine that it's very challenging. I can't imagine a professional translator thinking it's beneath their dignity.
