I am using Trados Studio 2009 for my first job. Everything was going great until I tried to save the translated content to the target file.

It's an Excel 2007 file and fails at 99.9% of progress bar completion with the error: "Failed to save target content. The worksheet contains a function. Therefore the sheet name could not be changed for the following sheet: [sheet name].

I have tried not translating the sheet name (or any sheet names), making a copy of the original file and saving to target without even translating anything, and I still get the same error. Has anyone encountered this error in 2009 or any previous version of SDLX / Trados? Any suggestions??

I suppose worst case I can export the TM and try to process this using SDLX or tag editor.. .thanks for any assistance. Update - I am trying to export the TM to a tmx file and it is erroring out when trying to import into Trados Workbench. Argh!! I have a translation that is being held hostage inside Trados Studio 2009!

Hi Kurt,

I had the same error recently. What I did was copying source to target for each segment containing the sheet names (don't know the default keyboard shortcut, since I work in the SDLX profile, but you should be able to select it from the context menu when right-clicking the segment). That did the trick, and the target file was created fine.

HTH,
Stefan

Didn't work. Jun 19, 2009

Tried that and didn't work unfortunately. This trick always worked for me in SDLX 2007.
It was a very complex Excel sheet however.

I ended up working with the customer who provided me a Word output of the terms from the spreadsheet. They will input on their end.
Trados 2009 auto-translated pretty much the entire thing based on the existing translation memory.

Thanks for the idea however.

XLS-Filter Jun 19, 2009

Hi Kurt,

Strange …

I also fiddled around with the XLS/XLSX filter options. You can access them via the Project Settings dialog, then File Types. For Excel, there's a section about Worksheet names that provides some options on handling them. Try "Skip Worksheet name".

Best regards,
Stefan

Ahh... Jun 19, 2009

I noticed that option as well and changed it. It probably would have worked if I had re-imported? the original file after making the change. If I get some time this weekend I'll try it and see if that would have fixed the problem.

Most likely, yes. I guess this option does only affect the creation process of xliff files and does not change the way existing xliffs are handled.

Try this... Jun 19, 2009

Hello Kurt,

This error occurs on the rare occasion where a worksheet name has been translated which is relied upon by a function in the spreadsheet. Hello Kurt,

This name change now prevents the function from finding the worksheet. I would recommend copying the source text to the target for the Worksheet names. To do this, please follow these instructions:

1. Open the translated SDLXLIFF file in the Editor
2. Please find the Document Structure Information (DSI) on the far right-hand side of the translated segment.
3. Please find the DSI entitled "WSN+" (Worksheet Name)
4. Please copy the source text over for this segment
5. Please do the same for any other WSN+ segments
6. Save the changes and try to create the translation again.

I hope this helps.

Many Thanks,

In my country, consumer laws would entitle me to sue the vendor for not providing proper support under an expected Warranty. I could claim lost income, lost business, etc.

To me, this is just another BUG we have to live with until one day somebody in SDL lab does something about it.

I am really very mad. Such an expensive piece of software, only to make me lose precious time and money!

Any problem specs? Oct 15, 2010

Hi BJC,
although I understand your frustration, perhaps the users of this Forum might help you if you specify what exactly your problem is.
What kind of Word file did you translate? What is the error message?

Unable to save translation into Target Excel Format Oct 16, 2010

Hi, Stanislav

I was in terrible RUSH, so could not waste any more time trying to save my work under STUDIO 2009 SP2.

What I did was to migrate the translation memory to .tmx, then to .mdb format. From that point, I used my good old SDLX application and applied the .mdb memory. Bingo, problem solved in "Brazilian" style.

However, I still want to know what happened. Then, I discovered SP3 - so I updated my SP2 to that version in hopes that this bug would be taken care of.

Unfortunately, not. What I get now - with the same spreadsheet, same project is the following:

Failed to save target content: '&' is an unexpected symbol. The expected symbol is '"' or '''. Line 2, position 17582.
-
System.Xml.XmlException, System.Xml, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b77a5c561934e089
2
17582

System.Xml
-

Then, since I have no idea where line 2, position 17582 is because my numbering goes up to SEGMENT 2421, I simply erased all occurences of the ampersand symbol (&) in the TARGET segments (right column), BUT TO NO AVAIL. The same error message appears and, most importantly, I CANNOT SAVE MY TARGET FILE IN EXCEL FORMAT.

It's a hard job done under GREAT TIME PRESSURE, of no less than 5.000 words.
Needless to say I got spitting mad, because customer is an important one for me, because it's a new account I was trying to impress with my speed and, look, not that I mean to brag, but I AM FAST.

My pride was hurt, because this new customer is looking down upon me complaining they have probably lost their customer because of failure to comply with deadline, because I fell behind by one full day over this STUPID issue.

What I cannot accept is having to PAY for better (urgent) support from SDL, which in my understanding should be their OBLIGATION -> FREE OF CHARGE. Specially for an EXPENSIVE software like this!

Anyway, I will be happy with any clues you could give me. What worries me now is quite a few posting about SP3 being a DISASTER. I wonder if I made a good decision.

In SP2, the error message was "Object reference not set to an instance of an object". But now it changed to "Failed to save target content: '&' is an unexpected symbol. The expected symbol is '"' or '''. Line 2, position 17582." under SP3.

By the way, there was an automatic update when I installed SP3, but problem continues ....

Can we see the file? Oct 16, 2010

Hi BJC,

Can we see your source file, and also your SDLXLIFF? You can mail it to me at [email protected] and we can try to see where the problem lies.

Regards

Paul

Hi Mar 23, 2011

Just in case anyone's still having problems with this, I just had the error and tried Gareth's suggestion from SDL Support above. However, instead of following the list of instructions such as accessing the Document Structure Information etc., I just went back into my translation editor and left the name of the worksheet untranslated.

The file then cleaned up fine and I was able to change the worksheet name manually in the cleaned file.

Thanks SDL Support!

still not working Sep 15, 2011

I am having this problem right now this minute. I have changed the worksheet names back to the originals - nothing; I have retranslated the entire document (it's an xlsx file, I'm using tag editor, trados suite 2007) - still nothing.

I'm doing my nut here. I have no idea what sdlxliff is.
