Some short stories, and it was fun to do.

A couple of poems Apr 3, 2008

... in French when I was at university. Not very great, as I insisted on making the words fit in with a rumpty-tumpty English type meter, which meant I had to alter the meaning and change the words to fit the rhythm. An interesting exercise, if somewhat pointless. Actually now that I think about it, it was more like a limerick meter... you know, like: "There was a young man from Iran, and he ran and he ran and he ran ..."
I reckon I'm better off sticking to what I do best and leave the art

only for fun Apr 3, 2008

I answered no because I don't consider my miserable efforts "literature".
I was doing an interpreting job at the Fiera (sitting around waiting for foreign visitors) and filled in the time writing "nonsense prose poems" inspired by the various tractors and things I saw around me.....
I only wrote them in Italian so that I could compare my "compositions" with those of my Croatian colleague!

No way will anything of mine ever be published, I'm afraid.

I did Apr 3, 2008

proz.com/books - the EN version was authored, not translated

Does it count as 'literature'?

Cheers,
Oleg

Yes Apr 3, 2008

Some poems in English when I was at school. I won prizes too. I could do it nowadays, but I need inspiration and... time!

Does my PhD thesis count? Apr 3, 2008

It wasn't published, but I've done scholarly articles as well.

What I hated about it was afterwards, when no one realized the language should've been foreign to me. They just took it for granted

of my books, which were published, are in foreign language. Plus many not published works.

I answered no, but... Apr 4, 2008

...now that I think about it, I did have a short article (written in Spanish) published in El Mercurio, a newspaper in Santiago, when I lived in Chile.
Does that count as literature?

I don't write in just one language Apr 4, 2008

I write poetry and short stories. But I don't stick to one language. If the thought is in Japanese, it's in Japanese. If the thought is in German ...; well you get the idea. That makes my work unpublishable. Which is probably just as well good as it is. The idea that I should write something that is not true to my reality or that I should write something that would be convenient for translators to translate rather than as something that reflects the art just doesn't appeal to me. ...

Define "literature" ;-)) Apr 4, 2008

My dissertations were in my two foreign languages, but I would hardly call them "literature"!

I'm very impressed by all these talented people who write poetry in their foreign languages!

awful love poems Apr 4, 2008

I'm pretty sure I penned a few of these on a couple of occasions, but it's too much of a stretch to call them "literature."

I answered no, but now that you mention it, I remember writing a couple of these too.

How embarrassing. Actually, looking back now, it's the ones I didn't write poems about that really mattered!

Define "literature"! Apr 5, 2008

I have written quite a few articles for publication in my two foreign languages. I started writing my own articles when I was confronted with a translation of something I wrote that totally missed the point. It was as if the acCENT was on the wrong syLABle all the way through. I just pray that I never have done. or will do, that to an author's work!!

I'd rather have my translation sound a little quaint or "foreign" than see it distorted by a translator who didn't understand what I
