Thank you for this interesting thread. Stepping into the industry as a complete novice, I have had so many thoughts and doubts to whether I can do something I love while also making a reasonable wage. The emergence of ChatGPT also gave me concerns about longevity of the profession in the future. However, I can see a wave of migration from Viet Nam to Australia can open doors to job opportunities to interpreters and translators to help those whose English is limited. There are plenty of situations where I can see AI cannot entirely replace the job of an interpreter/translator in Australia particularly. When I started translating, I made the mistake of translating words. Then, trying to read a badly translated book and comparing it with the original, I realized that the essence of translating was to translate ideas, not just words, if the words are correctly translated but the ideas are not, you get just a minimal expression of the original idea. Then I became a freelance translator.
Translating Ideas, Not Just Words, that is what, to the best of my knowledge, AI cannot and will not do.
However, I think all this cackling on AI will serve as a pretext to give companies and corporations a reason to "negotiate" to reduce translator pay, just like when CATS came out; it occurred to the software vendor that it would be a good sales pitch to promote reducing the translator's fee. The reduction in expenses and the increase in profits was the right bait; the argument became the banner of the industry.
Currently, here and there, you will find more than enough TM jobs to correct, with a "tight budget" as if the task would "take a look" and correct a few words as if it were a fairly, well translated job. However, everybody knows that is faster and easier, make a good job from scratch than have to correct a poorly translated job.
I have been playing with the translation possibilities from ChatGPT hoping to stop needing a CAT but in more than one case, I had to redo the whole segment.
The real thing we are fighting to is the need to increase profit and reduce expenses on the side of the client; we face the demand to deliver the highest possible quality translation against "the best rate" available.
Translation, transcreation, subtitling and some other derivatives of translation ideas from English to Spanish are my way of life, and I do not want to get cheaper and sale my time, knowledge and experience for bread and lentil stew. ▲ Collapse

That might be true for English, but in a language where every noun and adjective can take tens of forms depending on gender, number, declension, (and few other attributes) and conjugation yields hundred of variants for each verb, making spelling mistakes is extremely easy.
The day you get "machine translated" texts in Serbian that are no longer instantly recognisable as "artificial/non-human output" will be the day when human translators will finally have to quit for good.
Outside of few major languages, MT is still in early infancy - a crawling baby.

Imho, AI will end up being more valuable and more active in other areas than in translation, for example in crime investigation.
