Sadly, I can't even think straight before my morning coffee and during the day I take several breaks in my backyard, with coffee and cigarettes. When in the 90's I worked in-house, in Europe, we were allowed to smoke at our desk, but because when I work I tend to get in the "zone" and forget about the outside world, I would usually just light up and let it burn in the ashtray. Here, I can't smoke indoors, so the non-smoking rules actually force me to leave my desk and really focus on the cigaret... Smoking is one of the grounds for divorce in our house, so we don´t. I finish off the morning tea at intervals while I work. Then I put a pot of coffee on to make itself about half an hour before the midday news. I drink the first cup when it is ready, and allow the rest to get cold. I actually drink the coffee at the computer, but while I am waiting for it to brew, heat up etc. I do neck and shoulder exercises, or run a couple of times round the house to loosen up. This may in practice include collecting the post from the letter box or some vegetables from the garden etc. Other days, like neilmac, I find various things to do - fill the washing machine, and later hang the washing up. We have no livestock, but there are plenty of other odd jobs... I don´t mind long working days, but I do need my breaks! And when the coffee runs out - four large mugs - somebody makes a new pot of tea! ▲ Collapse | | | Breaks involve household chores/errands | Oct 13, 2010 |
I take breaks throughout the day, which is how I get things done around the house. I put the kettle on for a cuppa, then load the dishwasher or washing machine while the water is boiling/tea is brewing. I might also make calls, water the garden, or start preparation for our evening meal. At lunchtime, I sometimes go into town to do quick errands - pick up dry cleaning, go to the post office or return books to the library. In the summer, I make a point of swimming every lunchtime, even if it's just for 15 minutes. Sometimes if I'm struggling for a word or turn of phrase, simply stepping outside for a breath of fresh air or walking to the mailbox will help it surface. ▲ Collapse | | | This column will change your life... | Oct 13, 2010 |

Well, this column changed my life: http://www.guardian.co.uk/lifeandstyle/2010/apr/03/change-your-life-self-discipline A simple strategy of working in 25 minute segments and then stopping for 5 minutes, with a longer break every three or so periods. It works well to stop me being distracted by emails arriving - they wait till the end of the period. It is a good technique if you are multiplexing several tasks, enabling you to focus on one alone for each period. It goes by the name of Pomodoro after an Italian tomato-shaped timer and there is a site and paraphernalia for recording what you work on, but basically it is as simple as it sounds. It gives me plenty of opportunities to make a cup of tea. ▲ Collapse | |

I usually don't break until I come up against a challenging passage. Then I take my dogs for a quick walk on our greenbelt. | | | Caro Maucher Germany Local time: 03:55 Member (2005) English to German + ... As many breaks as necessary | Oct 15, 2010 |
But I drink my tea/coffee at my desk and back when I was a smoker I used to smoke while working too. That's multitasking for you!
