The whole sentence is below, i'm actually having problems understanding the whole sentence, so i would appreciate any suggestions. Thanks.

O desenvolvimento do câncer de mama e da leucemia mielóide aguda pode estar associado a variações de determinados genes que ocorrem com certa freqüência em indivíduos de uma população e são responsáveis por sua variabilidade genética.

a little help with the phrase Hi! Nuno Simplício is SPOT ON with the translation! The sentence itself is basically associating a higher probability of developing the two medical diagnostics with certain gene variations that occur, with some frequency, and thus are responsible for their genetic variability.

Alison pointed out a mistake. I stand by this answer as being closer to how we would say it in English. We do not say "variations OF..." It's more typical to say "linked" in medical jargon. This answer is written in the style of a medical text.
