español term

bandas de rodadura

español al inglés Técnico/Ingeniería Mecánica / Ing. mecánica
THis is actually used as an example in a theoretical text:

Seems to have to do with tires??

Thanks

couloirs reservés & bandes de roulement (French) I meant **bandes de roulement*** a couple of posts ago

Link Here's a link to Séparer ou périr : conception et pratique du couloir réservé à Paris (1960-1975) by Arnaud Passalacqua

This is not the original link I found to a really clear, searchable, PDF version, but it's got the whole thing.

couloirs reservés & bandes de rodadura (French) I can't find any direct quotes from Latour himself, but found this French piece by Arnaud Passalacqua, all about lanes reserved for buses, taxis etc in Paris. He mentions Latour, *"couloirs**, and **bandes de roulement** (synonyms)

I can find nothing that links this term in Spanish with Latour, which makes me think the author is referring to something else.

Agree with polyglot45 in that it's about what's on the road itself. I think it's exactly what Helena says: strips of asphalt laid on cobblestone streets (so vehicles don't make a noise). Also to reduce wear and tear of the cobbles.

From my searches they tend to be two (parallel) strips (of asphalt) for vehicle wheels to drive along, as per the following examples from Andalusia, and Leon.

I can't find anything like a reliable English rendering, so you might have to make one up... possibly DUAL ASPHALT TRACKS / DUAL ASPHALT STRIPS / PARALLEL ASPHALT TRACKS / PARALLEL ASPHALT STRIPS / TWIN ASPHALT TRACKS / TWIN ASPHALT STRIPS. Of course, your original mentions nothing about 2 bandas, but I think it's okay to refer to 2 because the purpose seems to be provide (silencing) tracks for each set of tires and not one wide strip that would completely ruin the aesthetic of the cobbles.

speed bumps/rumble strips

Even though it seems like an unlikely translation, I think this could be about speed bumps. All searches on Latour lead to this. Rumble strips is another option, but is mentioned less in this context.

Tim Dant: Morality and materiality - Lancaster University

Bruno Latour has returned to the theme of ... Speed bumps, chicanes, kerbs, rumble strips and so on restrict the movement of vehicles and are ...

Unlike Foucault, however, Latour offers a largely celebratory discourse of these capacities. Take, for instance, his famous discussion of speed bumps. According to Latour, speed-bumps emerge as a result of the impossibility of relying on the drivers’ individual wills, or on the esoteric force of Durkheim’s ‘collective consciousness’, to control their speed when, for example, approaching a school zone. Speed bumps, Latour argues (1999, 186), solve this problem by enabling the “translation” of a collective moral demand, such as ‘slow down so as not to endanger students’, into a self-interested demand, like ‘I should slow down and protect my car’s suspension’

neutral bigedsenior : It can't be both. They have different functions. I would go for speed bumps Plus speed humps. Bumps are made for 2- 5 mph, whereas Humps are for 10-15 mph. Respinse. Don't you think that is what the Discussion section is for??

I know it can't be both. My point here is that the term given doesn't appear in any articles on Latour, as far as I know. I have offered a couple of alternatives that make sense in the context .

I don't have time to find out what they're called in English but they appear to be strips of asphalt laid on cobblestone streets, so vehicles can move without making a noise.
