Spanish term

alzada

Spanish to English Social Sciences Anthropology Shepherding in Kingdom of Navarre
The context is a transhumant system of shepherding and cattle raising in Navarre during the medieval Kingdom of Navarre. From the context below, it appears to describe both a physical entity as well as an action.

The Kudoz glossaries and other online sources give the definition of "appeal" (legal sense), which obviously does not apply here.

Many thanks.

“Altzubide” o “altzuguren” o “altzugarai” es el camino, ámbito, o punto de alzada, es decir, un término pastoral donde se realize la operación de la alzada.

[Text from an essay written by Julio Caro Baroja, first half of 20th century, Spain.]

Discussion

Cecilia Gowar Mar 13, 2011:
Based on the context I'd say it is a gathering point for cattle, but so far I've not found any document to confirm this interpretation.

high pasture

or high pasture ground. Or high pasturing if you need a verb?

i.e. the high pastures where the animals are taken in summer.

From the RAE:

14. f. Ast. Lugar alto de pastos para el verano
Peer comment(s):

agree Christine Laurin : This seems to be the right idea from the sites I've seen. used to refer both to the high pasture grounds and village and the cattle drive to the higher pastures as well. See this site: http://www.galeon.com/vaqalztin/

Thanks Chrisitine :)
agree Charles Davis : In context it must be this. It's specifically an Asturian usage ("vaqueiros de alzada"), but Caro Baroja seems to be drawing an analogy between Navarrese "altzubide" etc. and Asturian "alzada".

Thanks Charles :)
neutral Rosa Paredes : My research took me in a completely different direction (?) We'll have to wait and see.

Thanks Rosa. "camino, ámbito, o punto de alzada" suggests to me that we are dealing with a place or journey rather than measurement
agree eski : Makes sense to me! eski

Thanks eski :)
agree Dr Trevor Stack : But I would correct it to "high pasturing" which can refer to both the activity and the place. "High pasturing" is commonly applied to pastoralism.

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thanks so much, Simon. The reference is to both the place and activity, and thus it seems that either "high pasture" or "high pasturing" could work, depending on context. Thanks to all who answered and commented."

measured

a place in which cattle is measured

alzada has different meanings (related with cattle raising) in Asturias, but outside Asturias, as far as I know, alzada is both an action (realizar la alzada) and the result of the action:

DRAE: Altura del caballo, y a veces de otros cuadrúpedos, medida desde el rodete del talón hasta la parte más elevada de la cruz.

driving/herding the livestock to summer pasture noun:summer pasture

As Carlo Baroja notes the word"alzada" is used to describe the process of herding/driving livestock (cattle, goats and sheep) to summer pastures to the higher reaches of the mountains. "Summer pasture" is the ultimate destination. This is still done all over the world. Once a year there is a conference of sheperds and herders here in Aragon and people come from Indian reservations in the US and outer Mongolia! We always go to the Pyrenees during the alzada; it's wonderful to watch the process. Once in while we've been there for the "bajada" as well. Examples: The practice of summer pasture farming is ancient, almost as old as ... law) if a farmer did not herd his cows and goats to the summer pasture, ... In addition, about 800 farms herded their cows or goats to 210 shared summer farms.

"In the Pyrenees where I am currently based, the summer pastures in the high mountains offer abundant, high-quality forage from mid-summer to early autumn, enabling animals to gain weight rapidly during these months. However, by early fall the temperatures begin to drop and by late October or early November a sudden snowfall can trap animals and strand them in the mountains." The author of this blog, a professor who researches the life of the herders, refers to the journeys up and down the mountain as "treks".
