Elementary Education and Secondary Education

I translate quite alot of Brazilian transcripts into English and these are the renditions I've always used, and which have been approved by my clients for such material.

Elementary School and High School

1º Grau - Grades 1st to 8th - Na realidade tem 1ª fase e 2ª fase do 1º Grau

2ºGrau - Grades 9th through 11th, so it's not quite the same as the American system.

Upon completion of the 2º Grau one can take the Entrance Examinations to the university.

primary / secondary education (or elementary and middle school / high school)

The educational system in Brazil is divided into two parts. First grau starts when the children are at seven years of age, second grau when the students are 15 years old.

In other words, roughly equivalent to elementary and middle school (1o grau) and high school (2o grau) in the U.S. educational system.

Elementary and Middle School, and High School

1o Grau is equivalent to 1st grade up to 8th grade. Elementary school usually only reflects up to 5th grade. 2o grau is 9th -11th or 12th.

primary education/secondary education

As a matter of fact, these terms are no longer current in Brazilian educational terminology. In the past, the state schools were known as EEPG (those with primary only), EESG (those with secondary only) and EEPSG (those with both). The new terminology is: "Ensino Fundamental" (former 1o. Grau) and "Ensino Médio" (former 2o. grau). The former comprises 8 years of schooling and the latter 3, except for teacher training courses which are of 4 years duration.
