Italian term

Oneri detraibili ed oneri deducibili

Italian to English Bus/Financial Law: Taxation & Customs Certificazione UNICA
Hello, I'm working on the translation of the self assessment taxes form "UNICA".

There are two different sections of oneri: DETRIBILI and DEDUCIBILI. I've translated the first with "deductibles" but what can I use for the latter? I cannot find a good distinguished translation for the two as there is a slight difference in meaning in Italian:

"gli oneri "deducibili", ovvero le spese che possono essere sottratte al reddito prima di calcolare l'imposta da pagare;
le spese "detraibili", che invece possono essere sottratte direttamente alle imposte da pagare, diminuendone così l'importo."

Thanks for the help!

philgoddard Right! My same idea, if there is not a full corresponding word in Ehglish.
philgoddard Nov 20, 2016:
I'm not sure this distinction exists in English, and expenses are usually deducted from income, not tax. You may have to say "deductible from income" and "deductible from tax".
Giovanni Pizzati (X) Nov 20, 2016:
Ilaria Gli oneri detraibili diminuiscono le imposte a carico, mentre gli oneri deducibili diminuiscono il reddito imponibile. Come traduzione va bene quella suggerita da Cristina Intern.

Peer comment(s):

neutral philgoddard : English doesn't really use "detract" in this way.

neutral CristianaC : with Phil - better to explain "deductible from income" "directly deductible from tax"

disagree Lara Barnett : I agree with others that "detracted" not used in English. It is never used in this way - if only translation was that easy to carry out. And translation of "ONERI is missing.
