plateau consisting of geological basement of varied aspect
sfacettato = of varied aspect (De Mauro Diz)
zoccolo = geological basement (rock)
DEFINITION of BASEMENT:
Geography A well consolidated geological formation which can be considered as homogeneous with respect to seismic wave transmission and response. Source: European Union. (references)
Igneous and metamorphic rock lying underneath a sedimentary covering. Source: European Union. (references)
Geological Harder and usually older igneous and metamorphic rocks that underlie the main sedimentary rock sequences (softer and usually younger) of a region and extend downward to the base of the crust. (references)
Mining In geology, an underlying complex that behaves as a unit mass and does notdeform by folding. (references)
... The geological basement of Sri Lanka is made up of metamorphic rocks cross cut by fractures and faults ...

I've done some research and have a new suggestion
*Plateau consisting of bedrock with multiple facies*
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&oi=defmore&defl=en&q=...
this is a very technical interpretation of *sfaccettato*
but I'm not really sure it applies here (no useful googles for altopiano + sfaccettato/a/i/e)
other possibilities for *sfaccettato* (with _very_ different meanings):
dissected
fragmented
broken
