A 'Purchaser' issues a 'letter of Credit', for goods to be purchased from abroad. The purchaser, either has not got an account with the particular Bank, which acts as an Agent for him/her. So, an amount in Cash, the equivalent of the amount of the 'Letter of Credit ' is deposited with that Bank...to cover the amount of the 'Letter of Credit'
It acts as a 'guaranteed letter of Credit', similar to an 'Irrevocable letter of Credit.
