German term
traenenverschmiert
German to English
Art/Literary
An old lady has just died. Her sons are griefstricken. "Sie liefen traenenverschmiert hin und her." This is a literary translation. I suppose there's no perfect direct translation, but what's closest?

streaked with tears / with tear-streaked faces
When I read the sentence, I see them walking through the room and their faces are streaked with tears. Maybe something like: They were pacing with tear-streaked faces. Hth, Eva

tearful/in tears/with tears in their eyes
"Traenenverschmiert" I would say is literally along the lines of "covered in tears", but as you can't really use that as an expression, I would choose one of these three:
"tearful(ly)": crying or about to cry.
"in tears": actually crying.
"with tears in their eyes": speaks for itself really
Maybe "in tears" is not so good, as it can only be used if they are actually crying.

"verschmieren" has the nuance of "verwischen" or TO BLUR (something written).
You could perhaps stretch that to mean their vision.

I definitely agree with Eva. I think her translation comes closest to the German meaning.
