Spanish term

ayudante

Spanish to English Other Military / Defense
Still working on this endless memoir (as some of you detected, apparently the original version was written in English; it was lost so I am translating a translation back into the original language. De terror, thanks for all your help)

Ayudante seems to be an officer rank:

Retornando a Londres, y ahora apto para el servicio, en un mes partí como ayudante de barco el 1 de febrero de 1916 hacia Alejandría con 137 oficiales y otros 2660 rangos, 102 unidades diferentes, continuamente llevamos salvavidas.
Llegamos a Egipto el 13 de enero de 1916, estuvimos en el hotel Shepheard, de allí partí hacia el área del Canal para reunirnos con mi viejo regimiento. Noticias patéticas por la ausencia de tantos viejos camaradas.

Discussion

Lisa Rosengard Feb 6, 2023:
The word translation is normally assistant or helper, but in the setting of ships and navy ranks it seems to be a captain's deputy or assistant with specific duties in administration. In the dictionary the adjutant is a staff officer who helps a commanding officer with administrative affairs.
Andrew Paul Kennett Feb 6, 2023:
Military rank. This could be Captain or Adjudant.
An officer holding an appointment as adjutant in such units typically has the rank of captain. The adjutant publishes the official orders of the unit, is responsible for supervising clerks and other administrative personnel, submits reports to higher headquarters, handles official correspondence, and maintains records.
But in your text it comes out as ship's assistant.

He had been ship's adjutant on the A on our way out and managed everything exceedingly well, showing every one unfailing courage...
