Llegamos a Egipto el 13 de enero de 1916, estuvimos en el hotel Shepheard, de allí partí hacia el área del Canal para reunirnos con mi viejo regimiento. Noticias patéticas por la ausencia de tantos viejos camaradas.

The adjutant publishes the official orders of the unit, is responsible for supervising clerks and other administrative personnel, submits reports to higher headquarters, handles official correspondence, and maintains records.
But in your text it comes out as ship's assistant.
