Italian term

linee di sviluppo

Italian to English Social Sciences History Academic course title
Hello,

This is the title of a university course:

"Linee di sviluppo della storia greca dall’età micenea all’età ellenistico-romana".

The course description is as follows:

"Obiettivi formativi generali

Can anyone help me with a good translation of "linee di sviluppo"? Does it mean "overview of", or can it perhaps be omitted altogether (simply "Greek History from the Mycenaean Period to...")??

Many thanks in advance,

Nina

I worked at a local university here in Milan and on seeing the English language versions of their course titles my Italian colleagues were always aghast at how short the course names were! We were constantly having to reassure them that no, short course titles in no way compromise importance or content... ;)

Glad to be of help, Nina! :)
Note from asker:
Hi, That sounds like very good advice, and I can give more detail in the Course Objectives section below, where it reads "...comprensione delle linee fondamentali di sviluppo della storia greca...". Thanks!
Peer comment(s):

agree Elettra Franchi : I agree with what you say about short titles : when it's concise, you may want to read what it's all about (if interested in the topic !)

Note from asker:
Thank you Oliver! I like this translation and will use it in the Course Objectives part that follows the title, where the term reappears (I think it's best to keep the title as concise as possible). Many thanks!
Peer comment(s):

agree wordgirl : this is nice too, Oliver, although I would possibly go with "Themes in Greek History from..." and still ditch the development bit

Yes, it is stated thus in academic circles.
Note from asker:
Of course that's correct as a literal translation, but do we really say that in English?
OK, thanks.
