German term

Begleitkreis

German to English Science Science (general) testing, experimentation
Sounds like some sort of committee that oversees/monitors (?) experiments/testing. But I may well be mistaken.

Source phrases: "Zwischenergebnisse von Messungen ... wurden dem Begleitkreis vorgestellt"
"Eine Zusammenarbeit von Umweltbundesamt, Bundesanstalt für Materialprüfung, Bundesanstalt für Arbeitsschutz und Arbeitsmedizin und Bundesinstitut für Risikobewertung existiert in Form des Begleitkreises"

Please provide explanations as well as appropriate URLs together with your suggested English expression.

Many thanks!

Discussion

Lori Dendy-Molz Jan 24, 2007:
Sure, Jan. I check them all the time myself. But I'd follow up with a google of English sites in context -- as you probably would, too.
Jan Liebelt (asker) Jan 24, 2007:
Lori: I wouldn't either, but a "bilingual" site certainly has more credence than a definition chosen on a hunch. And at the very least the context can provide pointers for the "real" translation.
Lori Dendy-Molz Jan 24, 2007:
I would add that I wouldn't blindly trust translated websites. Remember, they are translated by mere mortals of varying degrees of ability.
Lori Dendy-Molz Jan 24, 2007:
Jan, here is a URL for "Begleitkreis" both in the text and in the list of links. If you click on the 'english' link it will show you 'advisory committee' is used as the translation: http://www.renewables2004.de/de/preparation/nc.asp
Jan Liebelt (asker) Jan 24, 2007:
Jonathan: By "verifiable" I mean I want a site URL that has both terms on it - preferably side-by-side.
Johanna: No, my text is about the alleged harmful effects of exposure to printer toner.
Johanna Timm, PhD Jan 24, 2007:
Does the above ref. relate to your text?
Johanna Timm, PhD Jan 24, 2007:
Für die gesamte Laufzeit des Projekts wurde ein Begleitkreis eingerichtet, d. s. aus **Vertretern aus Wissenschaft, Gewerkschaften, Behörden, Nichtregierungsorganisationen u. Industrieverbänden** zusammensetzte.

Ken Cox Jan 23, 2007:
The problem with the translation (verifiable or otherwise) is that you have to know what this group does (its role, functions, duties, responsiblities, etc.) to know what it would be called in English. 'Beglietkreis' is a broad term.
Jonathan MacKerron Jan 23, 2007:
what makes you think that a verifiable translation of this word exists?
Jan Liebelt (asker) Jan 23, 2007:
Reference to German All your answers are very plausible, but I suspect you're giving me suggestions corresponding to my guess definition rather an actual (and verifiable) translation of the German expression.

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: ""Advisory board" seems to fit my text best, though I'm sure it could well be a "supervisory board" in other contexts. Many thanks."

supervisory panel

Panel is good. Here's another thought...

The REACH Supervisory Panel sets the direction for REACH. The current Panel comprises seven Members of Parliament (MPs) and 17 people-private sector representatives including grassroots leaders from the Citizens Consultative Committees (CCCs). This representation underscores the important role that the people-private sector plays in helping to strengthen the public consultation process.

There are lots more examples on the Web, Jan.

Haven't we met somewhere before ;-)

agree Jonathan MacKerron : or something with the word "support" in it?

Thanks, Jonathan. I'm not sure how "support" could or should be worked into it or conveyed more clearly. For all we know, monitoring projects may actually be the full extent of their support.
agree Ken Cox : Sounds reasonable given the context and the players. They might also provide advice (Jonathan's advisory committee), but that's guessing. ('begleit' covers such a marvelous range of territory)

Absolutely, Ken, 'begleit' could refer to so many broad concepts: interest, supervision, money, support ... you name it.

this is from a building group website, but the idea of "accompanying" should be mentioned in English; hope this helps

You can also call it a (special) task force to carry out specific functions.

advisory committee

From the website of the conference on renewable energies, sponsored by the German government (which might lend the the term the desired verifiability).

The body named Nationaler Begleitkreis (NBK) is referred to as National Advisory Committee (NAC).
Peer comment(s):

neutral Lori Dendy-Molz : Jonathan has already suggested this (I also posted this answer and this link before noticing, then hid my answer).
