German term

Neuansatz

German to English Science Archaeology
Context:
"Wegweisend ist die soziologische Herangehensweise, mit der sie geradezu einen Neuansatz der Ägyptologie bewirkte..."

Both Herangehensweise and Neuansatz seem to be crying out to be translated as "approach", but of course that doesn't work in English:

This sociological approach, with which she literally brought about a new approach, is pioneering...

Would "revolution" (or "minor revolution") be too strong for Neuansatz?

Discussion

mary austria Mar 13, 2009:
My first thought was "revolutionary", too.
Andreas Kobell Mar 13, 2009:
I'd say that depends on context, if this sociological approach resulted in totally new knowledge in Egyptology you definitely can use revolution. But if this did not bring about new insights I personally would not use use it. What about "new method"?
Kim Metzger Mar 13, 2009:
Herangehensweise Or another "approach" would be to find something different for Herangehensweise.

You could combine this with 'methodology' perhaps for your first term...

I think revolution is far too strong and too wide in its effects. If it were the case, I would have expected the German to reflect it.

new methodology

This paragraph in Juan Jose Castillos' paper on Predynastic Egypt is useful here:
"As archaeology and egyptology become more multidisciplinarian, with all the advantages such [an] approach implies, it would be unwise to ignore the advances in modern sociological research in order to refine our perception of the social structure and the degree of inequality in early Egyptian communities. Very limited attempts in this direction have been made, although I have applied this methodology to a large data base of over 8,000 Egyptian Predynastic and Early Dynastic tombs, using the variables that involved aspects of these funerary practices that could yield enough information to make the results significant." He is a respected Egyptologist from Argentina.
It would have bene helpful if you would have revealed who "she" is.
