Dutch term

document op plaat (in context)

Dutch to English Tech/Engineering Media / Multimedia Recording Industry
Hi,

I'm translating a recording contract and some additional correspondence for a recording company.

As background there is a Dutch band XXXX.

The relevant portion of the text is:

Vervolgens komt er op 12 November een document op plaat uit van XXXX.

The text then importantly goes on to say:

De titel is "YYYY"; dit zal bestaan uit een zeer luxe 2CD-box meet een 14 pagina's tellend boekje vol met interessante feiten over XXX en nog niet eerder uitgebracht plaatmateriaal....

"Document op plaat" shows up twice on Google in a CTP publishing context but I can't bring that together with the fact that this consists of the CD's AND the booklet.

Any help much appreciated.

Tks
Debbie

Dave Calderhead Oct 18, 2005:
Sorry- won't do that again
Deborah do Carmo (asker) Oct 18, 2005:
Thanks Dave, but let's not use this section for further suggestions (as I got a roasting the other day for it from a Mod), I'm reading the answers in their entirety, was just using it merely to point something out to E.S.
Dave Calderhead Oct 18, 2005:
Perhaps '[boxed] set of material from XXXX'
Deborah do Carmo (asker) Oct 18, 2005:
No, DutchConnection - it doesn't "concern" but happens on this release to also include previously unreleased tracks.

Collection

Reading through all the ifs and buts of the previous answers I think collection would be a neutral and flexible term, often used in the music industry anyways. This can obviously include hits, previously unreleased tracks and perhaps the odd new track.

record

According to me "document op plaat" is bad managerial Dutch for "een plaat". As far as I can comprehend this band XXXX will bring out a new record (een plaat) on Nov. 12th.
It seems the "document op" has been added to give some glamour to it. You know, it's not *just* a record... it's a document on record, with booklet, and jewel box and so on.

I think this term could be applicable in this case!

agree Dave Calderhead : //Dont, mention it (:-{)> / I think the term Kenneth might be referring to is "back catalogue", which would be a very free translation,

Thanks Dave! // Thanks again Dave!
agree Ken Cox : Or perhaps 'documentary recording' -- from the context it sounds like a sort of retrospective package (more than just the 'best of'). But there's probably a trade jargon term for it...
13 mins
Yes certainly! Even more googles for that too...
neutral DutchConnection : I thought a back catalogue was a re-release of tracks released in the past but 'out of print' since. This concerns previously unreleased tracks. I personally don't like the literal translation: "...will release a recorded document of XXX."

You may a point there. Thanks!

[Personal note: Some of you already know me, a fledgling ProZ member, under my real name of E.. S.., but I decided I should be more discreet about my identity on the web. I probably watch too many scary movies.]

Note to writeaway: From the context, document is used in the sense of 'history' here. Clue 1: Recording contract + additional correspondence. Clue 2: 'Vervolgens' = first action after the recording contract. No songs yet recorded under the new contract. 'Document of plaat' = history of XXX's existing material. Clue 3: the fact that this is previously unreleased material is given in '...en nog niet eerder uitgebracht plaatmateriaal'. My reason for not looking up the term e.g. on the web is because to my mind it is used in a very individual or 'hip' way here by the author, therefore I'd translate it from its context, not literally, buy according to the sense.

Hi Dave, I know, the unnecessary double adjective rears its ugly head, 'previously unreleased', it's what you got smacked for in English class, but it's the standard term in the record industry, double everything! So I'd use it for this client.
Peer comment(s):

neutral writeaway : same question as to Dave-can you provide any back-up for your translation (ie show how you arrived at this solution)./what note?
13 mins
Certainly, see note.
neutral Dave Calderhead : Hello E. Is this the repetition sales pitch (;-{)> // set of previously unreleased... Perhaps modify the wording to 'set of unreleased material from XXXX' so it's not repeated exactly?
28 mins
Sorry? ...I'm a bit slow... :-) which 'this'?

I think record set is the older term but could still be used if you want avoid box[ed] set that is more common nowadays.

From the context of the two Dutch references given by Google for "document op plaat" the inferred meaning is "recording" or "record" as Daniel also suggeted while I was preparing my answer.
However, the remainder of the context led me to suggest
record set
