Dutch term

Hoge Heerlijkheid

Dutch to English Other History
Dit dorp heeft als Hoge Heerlijkheid of Vrije Baronie een rijke en bewogen geschiedenis gekend.

I translated Hoge Heerlijkheid as "Royal Protectorate", but I'm not sure if this is correct.

Thank you.
Proposed translations (English)
4 +1 the Manor

Discussion

Ken Cox Jan 16, 2006:
H.H. and V.B. may be (quasi-) synonymous (possibly from different historical periods). See e.g. the definition of 'baron' at http://sinclair.quarterman.org/glossary/glossary.html

the Manor

I read this as the plain old "Manor".

it certainly isn't a protectorate

one could say "the Great Manor" - to cover a larger area.

Note that Heerlijkheid is sometimes translated as Seigneurie, but as this is specifically Norman French it would not be suitable for a Dutch Manor (in my opinion). But if someone has a better idea...

From Encarta Winkler Prins

heerlijkheid*

On further reflection, I would put "Great Manor".
Peer comment(s):

agree Ken Cox : FWIW, the Grote Van Dale says a heerlijkheid is a 'property that gives the owner a title and certain rights'. I'm not sure whether this would correspond to a UK manor in the historical sense, but it's certainly not a protectorate.
