Увы, не учат ВСЕ латынь в гимназиях и лицеях. Это факультативный третий язык и не во всех лицеях он есть , очень часто конкурирует с русским. Выбор за учениками/студентами. Про латынь во Франции информация из первых рук. Про другие страны утверждать не берусь.

PS.а переводчику с Пелевиным,действительно ,повезло

Все или не все, это можно долго говорить. Суть в том, что сама латынь не является неким загадочным предметом. У Эко все это прекрасно описано в его книге, все вопросы к нему.
