エージェントを通じて、とある日本の企業の登記簿の記載事項を証明する文書の英訳を依頼されました。
法務局の登記官が発行した文書です。

複数の取締役、監査役(日本人)の名前が記載されており、その中に、複数の読み方が考えられる名前がいくつかあります。

エージェントに確認したところ、

The client does not know the english spelling names.
Please translate the names as you think they are supposed to be.

という返事が返ってきました。
公的機関に提出するための翻訳を必要としているようなので、勝手な想像で名前を英語にするのがためらわれます。

皆さんならこのような場合、どうされますか？

英語は達者ではないので、日本語で失礼いたします。
もしかしたら、エージェントは、同じ漢字であっても読み方が何通りかあると知らないのかも知れません。そこを説明したほうがいいと思います。
Maybe the agency does not know that in Japanese there are several ways of reading the names,
even written with the same characters and this is not the question of spelling.

The translation agency gave me the same answer: "Do your best, use the most widespread reading of the names".
To minimise the possibility of mistakes, I have started collecting information on the person in the internet: google, facebook, instagram, linkedin and so on.

To minimise the possibility of mistakes, I have started collecting information on the person in the internet: google, facebook, instagram, linkedin and so on.
For example, you may google (in Japanese) the surname and the company name, and you may find some press releases or news about the company. News sometimes report the kana reading of names).
Or you may google the full name and date of birth.
If the company has a website in English version, you may find the names of company directors there.
Another way is to google in English the supposed name in Romaji and company name and see if you get any matches.
If the company is very small, you can check the local telephone book, assuming that the person lives in the same city or area.
