Function The European Central Bank (ECB) is seeking applications to fill the position of English Translator in the Linguistic Services Division, which is one of the four Divisions constituting the Directorate General Secretariat and Language Services. The Directorate General is responsible for:
a.. planning and co-ordinating the preparation and conduct of and the follow-up to the decision-making process of the General Council, the Governing Council and the Executive Board of the ECB, b.. co-ordinating ECB public consultations, c.. maintaining the ECB\'s central archives, d.. preparing, notifying and publishing the ECB\'s legal acts and instruments in the official Community languages in accordance with the linguistic regime and transparency policy of the ECB, e.. providing translation, editing and proof-reading services in the official Community languages for the ECB and, as the case may be, the Eurosystem and the European System of Central Banks (ESCB), and f.. developing and maintaining an ESCB-related terminology database in the official Community languages for use primarily by the linguistic staff of the ESCB. The Linguistic Services Division is responsible for:
a.. preparing and revising translations into English (the ECB\'s vehicle language) of non-legal texts from the other current official Community languages (Danish, German, Greek, Spanish, French, Italian, Dutch, Portuguese, Finnish and Swedish) and, following the enlargement of the European Union and the ESCB, prospectively also from the official Community languages of Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Slovakia and Slovenia, b.. editing English-language ECB documents (other than legal documents) for style, content and correct terminology, c.. proof-reading English-language ECB texts prior to publication to ensure accuracy and consistency of style, terminology and presentation, d.. developing and maintaining a multilingual terminology database for internal and ESCB-wide use and providing end-user support in the field of language technology tools, and e.. outsourcing translations into English from languages other than official Community languages. The vacancy is for a translator of English mother tongue whose duties will include the translation of texts into English from at least two other (current or prospective) official Community languages, the editing of texts drafted in English by native and non-native speakers, and the proof-reading of English texts. The successful candidate will join an established team of English Translators whose work is co-ordinated by a Principal.
Qualifications and experience a.. Perfect command of English and an excellent command of two other (current or prospective) official Community languages. A working knowledge of an additional (current or prospective) official Community language would be an asset. b.. Advanced university degree in two languages which are current or prospective official Community languages (excluding English). A postgraduate diploma in translation would be an advantage. c.. Several years\' professional translation experience, preferably in the economic or financial field. d.. Sound background knowledge of economics and finance. e.. Familiarity with the central banking environment in general and the ECB in particular would be an advantage. f.. Strong interpersonal skills: in particular, good communication skills and the ability to work as part of a team in a multinational environment are very important, as are self-motivation and flexibility. g.. Advanced PC skills and a practical knowledge of standard MS Office applications are essential. Experience with a terminology management package such as TRADOS MultiTerm and translation memory software such as TRADOS Translator\'s Workbench would be an advantage. Starting date As soon as possible.
