Rarely Jul 3, 2021

In normal times I try to avoid working during the weekend. However, over the past year I have ocassionally taken on weekend projects due to the Covid outbreak limiting my freedom to get up to my usual weekend activities.

When necessary Jul 3, 2021

I put in several hours the past two weekends as well as the current one. The alternative was to work longer hours on the weekdays with greater stress. I'm more productive when I'm rested than after working for 8+ hours.

I work on weekends when I take a comp day during the week Jul 4, 2021

I make sure working on weekends does not become a routine. When I do, I take another day off in the middle of the week. Most of my weekend work is volunteer work, like teaching at a conference, supporting a vaccination clinic, etc.

Fifteenth, isn't it?

Anyway, for the umpteenth time, I work during the weekend if I have work to do. If I don't, I don't. The same is true for weekdays. Isn't that what being a freelancer is about? Being free to work when you choose?

Whenever necessary Jul 4, 2021

It totally depends on my workload! I might take 1-2 days off during the week and then go a couple weeks with no days off. Though I rarely accept tight deadlines that’s exactly what I’ve been doing this weekend: translating an urgent report (17,000 words) to be delivered on Tuesday. Back to work!

Sometimes Jul 4, 2021

I am not available to clients on weekends, but sometimes I work if I want to finish something or haven't had enough time during the week.

I have also worked on many weekends in the past year because other options were limited due to Covid, but I usually have at least one day off every week.

For me there is no such thing as the weekend. I work when I have work, and take time off when I haven't.

More than I used to Jul 4, 2021

I grew up in a family where working at the weekend was normal, and have had jobs myself where service was provided 24/7, although I only worked in the daytime. So it is no big deal when it fits in with my programme.

Like this week, to get through a boring job, I take shorter stints and get a couple of hundred words done, then take a break and go back.

I used to keep weekends free if possible when my family was at work and school, with time off at the weekends, because we had very little time together the rest of the week. But now many of our friends have retired and seeing family involves travelling and taking at least a week off.

Covid-19 has blurred everyone's sense of time, and we try to avoid crowds. If I go out of the house, it is when everyone else is at work, so then I work at weekends, when shops and other places are more crowded.

Almost always... Jul 4, 2021

...but maybe not a full day. I never work in the evenings and much prefer the quiet of weekend mornings, with no email pinging.

One small thing that has improved my life: I have turned off email reminders about these discussions. I now only come here when I feel like it. I have also unsubscribed to as many other things as I can.

The road to human happiness passes by way of getting as few emails as possible. And by keeping the sound turned off.

Not normally, but ... Jul 4, 2021

... I'm currently studying a part-time masters degree, which has turned my working life on its head and eliminated any notion of 'free time' or 'leisure'.

I'm currently at my desk on a Sunday morning finishing off a hydropower assignment (with a mountain of actual paid work waiting for me when I'm done).

Procrastinating on internet forums obviously helps a lot with this.
