I work as an English to French translator based in a small Australian country town and to support myself I am also employed as a part time language teacher. I have tried to diversify in editing/proofreading and I have done volunteer subtitling of videos, hoping it would result eventually in paid work. In theory, I should be able to support myself financially but the reality is that I am finding it difficult to reach potential paying clients. Any idea how to go about this?

A good example of his point to "reduce risk in an ever-changing market" is my dad. He worked for the same manufacturing company for 32 years, at least 25 on the same machine. He never learned any new skills, never tried anything new. But seven years ago, his job suddenly disappeared (as is common with manufacturing jobs of late) and he found his options to be very limited. One of the scenarios would be to visit several fairs in larger cities in Australia - of course, you have to have a pitch, a business card, etc. Once you have contacts, you can get new projects - even if your place of permanent residence is not Melbourne, for instance. Interesting ways of diversification. There is no magic recipe for success in this department, all depends on the effort and dedication that one invest.
As translators we must keep learning and updating constantly.
