Que ce soit dans le sport de compétition mais aussi dans le sport de loisir, le secteur évolue constamment et rapidement en termes de goût personnel, de jeux populaires et de technologies. La notion de performance inclut Innovation, Efficacité et Rapidité; les enjeux de la fabrication des articles de sport sont de ce fait très ciblés : la recherche de la diminution du poids ne doit pas se faire au détriment de la résistance des matériaux.
Les matériaux utilisés dans le domaine du sport étant déjà très performants, leurs propriétés mécaniques ne peuvent guère être améliorées davantage en utilisant des charges conventionnelles. Il n’est donc pas étonnant de retrouver de plus en plus d’articles renforcés par des nanotubes de carbone dans le commerce.

Du verre au carbone en passant par les aramides, les matériaux utilisés dans la construction de bateaux multi coques Haute Performance ont largement évolués depuis 20 ans. La transformation des géométries, le besoin en économie de poids et la nécessité d'une performance haute qualité sous de mauvaises conditions climatiques et en mer, ont amené à un nouveau choix de matériaux composites pour la fabrication de ces bateaux. Actuellement les critères de conception sont basés sur une rigidité structurelle et un niveau de charge des pièces très proche des limites de résistance des matériaux.
Ces nouveaux matériaux doivent être capables, en cas de mauvais temps, de contrer une grande énergie d'impact des vagues : il est donc important d'utiliser des matériaux très résistants à l'impact et ayant une bonne tolérance à la corrosion. Un bon rapport poids/rigidité est également requis pour obtenir de hautes performances.
L'enjeu est donc de construire des bateaux plus rapides, légers, robustes, dans des matériaux plus durables.
Des coques en fibres de carbone extrêmement fines, légères et rigides ont été conçues pour la coupe de l'America 2003. Malgré les prouesses considérables du carbone en matière de solidité (15 fois celle de l'acier) et rigidité (3 fois celles des métaux traditionnels), les matériaux en carbone ne restent pas moins cassants et ne se déforment pas sous haute charge ou à l'impact.
Grâce à leurs extraordinaires propriétés de renfort mécanique, les nanotubes de carbone représentent les molécules les plus adaptées pour surmonter ces problèmes. Mais leur singularité ne s'arrête pas là, les NTCs montrent également une meilleure résistance à la corrosion et à la fatigue.

From carbon glass to aramid fibres, the High Performance materials used for building multi-hull boats have been extensively developed over the past 20 years. Geometric transformations, low weight requirements and the need for high-quality performance in adverse weather conditions at sea, have each led to the development of new composite materials for manufacturing these boats. Currently, the design criteria are based on structural rigidity and a load-bearing that is consistent with the resistance limits of the materials.
