Marketing is the set of activities, processes and strategies designed in order to create and communicate brand value by identifying and responding to consumer needs and desires.
When we talk about marketing, we are referring to all the activities, techniques or strategies that aim to improve the sales process, and that can go as far as modifying the design of the product if it makes it more attractive to its target audience, not only in the advertising sense of attracting more people with a product and a beautiful design, but also the identification of customer needs. That is, studying what they need, why they need it, how they want it or why they want it.
That's why marketing is not only dedicated to improving sales, but also involves everything related to improving the sales process of a product or service, from the study of the need that will cover, the market niche, its production, its sales format, its logistics, its commercialization and its after-sales service.
Having that said, we realize that the discipline of marketing goes far beyond advertising because the objective of marketing is much bigger. Thus, we can say that advertising is only one part of marketing.

It is responsible for analyzing how the company is perceived in the marketplace and studying how to improve or maintain that perception, in order to achieve the company's short and long-term goals.
Marketing objectives
The ultimate goal of marketing is to increase the sales of a product or service,and in order todo so it analyzes how to add value to a brand and bring a company's products or services to the people who need and want them. This generates value for the company, guaranteeing profitability.
Another objective of marketing is to attract new customers and retain them, therefore can seek to attract public attention. For example, through media exposure, the use of slogans, the use of famous people and the design of product packaging.
To achieve its goals, marketing encompasses everything from market analysis, existing or potential demand, product design, promotion and packaging, to the best communication with potential customers. All of this is separated into four different strategies, which we will see below.

Marketing strategies
There are four marketing strategies that we call: the 4 P's of marketing and these are in turn complemented by the 4 C's of marketing.
The 4 Ps of marketing
- Product: Includes everything from the study of the need to cover, and the market niche, all the way to the design of the product and its packaging.
- Price: analyzes the value perceived by both the customer and the buyer, the price to be set and the format in which it will be charged.
- Place: this is the place where the product can be acquired, either physically or digitally. It analyzes the distribution channels.
- Promotion: analyzes the strategies of the diffusion and presentation of the product, in order to promote its purchase. This is where advertising comes into play.
Marketing therefore encompasses everything that leads a company to improve the sales process, from the first study of the market niche to the acquisition of customers and maintaining a relationship with them. Whether it is, for example, a thank you letter or email or even a lunch with a potential customer.
Companies study the environment that will surround their project, in order to be able to face and anticipate its characteristics and evolution. They analyze the current situation according to this marketing environment, so that the company is oriented towards its objectives. To this end, it is very important to develop a marketing plan, which is one of the most important elements of a company's business plan.
The 4 Cs of Marketing
The evolution of consumer trends, as well as the new social communication channels, have led to a transformation of the foundations on which the marketing strategies implemented by companies today are based.
The objective is to make the consumer feel listened to and understood by the brand, offering him all possible facilities to make his buying experience simple, convenient and fast, and to make his relationship with the brand close and natural.
The 4 C's of marketing are the following:
- Consumer
- Communication
- Convenience

Origin of marketing
We can learn more about the origin of marketing and its approaches over time in the following article. However, we will make a short summary of the origin of marketing afterwards.
Marketing strategy and techniques go as far back in time as civilization itself. They were put in place when a merchant or business owner was looking to sell more than his competitors or to reach more potential customers interested in his product or service.
However, marketing developed and, more importantly, became professionalized with the advent of the industrial revolution in the 18th century. Mass production and the enactment of anti-monopoly laws created the need to differentiate oneself from the rest of the competitors who were producing exactly the same product.
Consumption is the sole end and purpose of all production and the interests of the producer should be served only so far as is necessary to promote the intention of the consumer" is a statement written by Adam Smith in the 18th century and it comes close to establishing the basis of the concept of modern marketing. It was at the beginning of the 20th century, more precisely in 1902, that the term "marketing" was first used by Professor Jones of the University of Michigan. Il est chargé d'analyser la façon dont l'entreprise est perçue sur le marché et d'étudier comment améliorer ou maintenir cette perception, afin d'atteindre les objectifs de l'entreprise à court et à long terme.
Objectifs de marketing
L'objectif ultime du marketing est d'augmenter les ventes d'un produit ou d'un service, pour ce faire, il analyse la manière d'ajouter de la valeur à une marque et d'apporter les produits ou services d'une entreprise aux personnes qui en ont besoin et qui les veulent. Cela permet de générer de la valeur à l'entreprise, en garantissant une rentabilité.
Un autre objectif du marketing est d'attirer de nouveaux clients et les fidéliser, pour cela il peut chercher à attirer l'attention du public. Par exemple, par l'exposition aux médias, l'utilisation de slogans, le recours à des personnes de renommée et la conception de l'emballage des produits.
Pour atteindre ses objectifs, le marketing englobe tout, depuis l'analyse du marché, la demande existante ou potentielle, la conception, la promotion et l’emballage du produit, jusqu’à la meilleure communication avec les clients potentiels. Tout ceci est séparé en quatre stratégies différentes, que nous verrons ci-dessous.
En outre, comme mentionné ci-dessus, le marketing va de pair avec les objectifs globaux de l'entreprise.
En résumé, les objectifs du marketing sont :
- L’augmentation des ventes d'un produit ou d'un service.
- Construire et conserver la relation avec les consommateurs.
- Ajouter de la valeur à une marque, un produit ou un service.
- Améliorer l'image perçue d'une entreprise, d'une marque, d'un produit ou d'un service.

Stratégies de marketing
Il existe quatre stratégies de marketing que l’on appelle : les 4 P du marketing et ces derniers sont à leur tour complétées par les 4 C du marketing.
Les 4 P du marketing
- Produit : Englobe tout depuis l'étude du besoin à couvrir, et la niche du marché auquel il va s’adresser, jusqu’à la conception du produit et de son emballage.
- Prix : analyse la valeur perçue aussi bien par le client que par l'acheteur, le prix à fixer et le format dans lequel il sera facturé.
- Lieu : il s'agit de l’endroit où le produit peut être acquis, que ce soit physiquement ou digitalement. Il analyse les canaux de distribution.
- Promotion : analyse les stratégies de la diffusion et la présentation du produit, afin de promouvoir son achat. C'est là que la publicité entre en jeu.
Le marketing englobe donc tout ce qui amène une entreprise à améliorer le processus de vente, depuis la première étude de niche du marché jusqu’à l'acquisition de clients et le maintien d'une relation avec eux. Qu'il s'agisse, par exemple, d'une lettre ou d'un email de remerciement ou même d'un déjeuner avec un client potentiel.
Les entreprises étudient l'environnement qui va entourer leur projet, afin de pouvoir affronter et anticiper ses caractéristiques et son évolution. Ils analysent la situation actuelle en fonction de cet environnement marketing, ainsi, l'entreprise s’oriente vers ses objectifs.
