ROMA, Vaticano, novembre 1563
L’esile fiamma della candela, respingeva per breve tratto il buio, che, inesorabile, poi riguadagnava intero il suo dominio. Il vento, che si insinuava nella struttura in costruzione, creando improvvisi ed inattesi refoli, la rendeva insicura nelle pur salde e nodose mani del Vecchio.
Egli, tuttavia, riusciva ogni volta a mantenerla accesa; e, quand’anche si fosse spenta, ciò non sarebbe stato di impedimento al cammino, tanto completa e precisa era, nella sua mente, la conoscenza del luogo in cui si trovavano, pure della grande parte non ancora costruita. L’uomo che lo seguiva, un colosso agile quanto forte, recava sulle spalle, non senza evidente sforzo, una massiccia cassa, riflettente freddi bagliori metallici, quando colpita tangenzialmente dalla incerta luce della facella. Non parlavano, solo poteva udirsi il ritmico procedere dei passi dal differente spessore acustico, e l’affanno dei respiri: l’uno per la fatica, l’altro per gli anni. Il frullo secco delle ali di un uccello, disturbato nel suo riposo notturno, li fece trasalire. “Maestro, consentimi un breve riposo”.
Supplicò il giovane provato. “Non ora”, replicò duro il Vecchio, “Il tempo incombe, e tutto ha da essere compiuto avanti l’alba. Resisti, figliolo, rinsalda la tua grande forza nella fermezza del pensiero”. Queste parole ebbero l’effetto di un balsamo che recò nuovo vigore alle membra dell’uomo, e nel silenzio procedettero.
Volgendosi, di quando in quando, col pretesto di illuminargli il cammino, il fiero Vegliardo sentiva salire dal profondo dell’anima, l’usuale sentimento di affettuoso, paterno orgoglio, nei confronti del fedele discepolo. Tante voci erano sorte, per lo più malevole e diffamatorie, sul rapporto tra Michelangelo, e quel giovanetto dall’aspetto di Cherubino, poi divenuto uomo vigoroso e bellissimo, dallo sguardo profondo e penetrante. Non gli era propriamente figlio, non essendo frutto diretto del suo seme, eppure era nato per suo attivo intervento, e mai Padre si era dimostrato più amorevole e sollecito verso la propria discendenza. E come Pater et Magister, il giovane, in filiale rispetto, gli si rivolgeva. Il vecchio manteneva, impressi nella memoria, vividi, incancellabili, come i caratteri incisi sulle tavole di Mosè dal dito di fuoco di Dio, ogni attimo e ogni sentimento travolgente, dai quali si era sentito sopraffatto in quel fatale ventinove Maggio del 1523.
In Firenze, il travaglio di Monna Caterina si era completato, e il radioso meriggio toscano, aveva baciato gli occhi, già curiosi e indagatori, di Leonangelo. Michelangelo stesso aveva guidato, profondo conoscitore dell’anatomo-fisiologia umana, l’impegno del feto maturo entro il canale del parto, agevolando col più corretto movimento di restituzione, lo scivolamento delle spalle e la completa fuoriuscita del bambino. D’altronde, dopo la perfetta condotta dell’intera gestazione, non avrebbe potuto rischiare di compromettere l’opera sublime, per l’empirica faciloneria di una mammana, o l’imperizia di un cerusico di bassa lega.
Un vero miracolo si era compiuto. Le leggi stesse della Natura sovvertite, o meglio, piegate alla volontà dell’ingegno umano.
Michelangelo aveva esaminato accuratamente il neonato. Egli era perfetto, e perfettamente vitale. Ogni sua parte armoniosamente e funzionalmente correlata, nell’insieme della Divina macchina Uomo.

ROMA, 18 febbraio 1564
L’inverno inclemente mieteva, quell’anno, vittime nei settori più deboli della popolazione. Bambini ed anziani, venivano colpiti da misteriose febbri scuotenti, che insorgevano rapidamente, scatenando catarri tenaci e purulenti, ostacolo fatale alle funzioni respiratorie.
Il fisico di Michelangelo, pur robustissimo, che lo aveva condotto fin quasi alla soglia degli ottantanove anni, improvvisamente cedette sotto il loro peso. Fino a pochi giorni avanti, aveva ancora manovrato, con insolito vigore, martello e scalpello, imprimendo i suoi ultimi segni nel marmo di una nuova Pietà.
Singolare coincidenza: la sua fama di scultore preclaro, era sorta da un compianto di Maria sul Figlio morto (commissionatogli quasi settant’anni prima dal Cardinal Villier de la Grolaye) e tramontava ora, attraverso il medesimo tema, doloroso e pur dolcissimo.
A causa però dell’essudato, che andava progressivamente riempiendo gli spazi ventilatori del polmone sinistro, le forze e la lucidità lo abbandonarono. Steso nel piccolo letto, cereo e rugoso, si contraeva via via, nella ineluttabile stretta della morte.
Il respiro polipnoico e superficiale, liberava nell’aria esalazioni ed umori tristemente presaghi. Il rantolo gorgogliante, dominava l’acustica della camera.
Attorno al giaciglio, muti ed atterriti, Daniele da Volterra, Tomaso dè Cavalieri e Leonangelo.
La mano, scarnificata e deforme, si sollevò, come a voler toccare qualcosa nell’aria. O a consegnare, intuirono nel medesimo istante i due diletti.
L’arcana eredità passava definitivamente nelle loro mani.
Michelangelo era morto.

ROMA, Vaticano, 15 giugno 1590
L’ultimo mattone era posto.
La grande Cupola si ergeva, maestosamente orgogliosa, ad onore perenne del suo Artefice, verso quel cielo Romano che, talvolta, già lascia intravedere il Paradiso.
Gli occhi del vecchio non seppero trattenere le lacrime, che si fecero strada in rivoli innumerevoli, nei solchi profondi delle rughe del suo volto.
Dalla base dell’obelisco, dove si trovava, in mezzo ad una folla curiosa ed ammirata, la nuova prospettiva architettonica era possente: quasi opera della mano stessa di Dio.
Aveva fatto proprio un bel lavoro.
Di mero esecutore, certo, ma pur sempre un bel lavoro.
Chi altro mai avrebbe potuto portare a termine quell’impresa ciclopica in meno di due anni?
Non certo i due architetti ora nominalmente a capo della Fabbrica, che di anni ne avevano preventivati dieci.
Bravi ragazzi in fondo il Fontana e il Della Porta.
Tutti i meriti, è vero, se li intascavano loro, morali e materiali, ma a lui di ciò non importava punto; e comunque essi non si erano mai opposti ad alcuna sua prescrizione.
Anche quattro anni prima, del resto, Domenico Fontana non aveva fatto altro che riportare ed applicare le sue indicazioni ed i suoi calcoli circa il numero di argani, di canapi, di uomini e cavalli, per issare magistralmente lo smisurato obelisco egizio nello spazio antistante la Basilica.
Per carità, Fontana avrebbe tecnicamente potuto far da solo: (anche se, forse, a lui sarebbe mancata la pronta lucidità per gridare con tutta l’aria che aveva in corpo, alla vista dei canapi fumanti, quel DATE ACQUA ALLE CORDE, del cui autore, dopo quattro anni ancora si favoleggiava).
Il fatto era che l’obelisco doveva essere eretto proprio in quel punto preciso ed a quella precisa quota d’altezza, in ossequio a disposizioni tassative dello stesso Michelangelo, note a lui soltanto (Ed anche, per la verità, al Cavalieri il quale, però, ormai sopraffato dall’ondata mistica, che l’aveva travolto negli ultimi tempi, non s’interessava più di tali questioni).
E l’ordine era stato rispettato. Al millimetro.
Ne aveva avuta la prova alcuni giorni dopo, quando, salito sul torrione nord-ovest di Castel Sant’Angelo, munito di uno strumento ottico Leonardesco, sconosciuto a tutti, traguardando tangenzialmente alla cuspide dell’obelisco fino all’intersezione col tamburo della cupola ancora incompiuta, aveva intercettato un punto sullo stesso, riflettente al magico occhio meccanico, un’intensa luce blu.
Le tessere si incastravano alla perfezione rivelando il sublime mosaico concepito da una Mente superiore.
Un improvviso schiamazzare di fanciulli che si rincorrevano spensierati tra la folla lo trasse fuor dall’abisso dei ricordi, in cui era scivolato.

L’aria, nel sotterraneo di Castel Sant’Angelo, si era fatta irrespirabile, segno che il Tassidermista stava procedendo nel suo lavoro.
In un bacile, ai suoi piedi, erano raccolti gli intestini, la milza il pancreas e lo stomaco, con tutti gli omenti, mentre la grande massa brunastra del fegato giaceva separata, da un lato, assieme a cuore e polmoni.
Il Mastro settore si accingeva ora a riempire le cavità toracica e addominale, di spezie esotiche e triturati di vari corindoni e lapislazzuli, dopo averle cosparse dei più pregiati balsami e mirre d’Arabia, estratti di ghiandole animali, e chissà che altro, per preservare il corpo dai processi putrefattivi.
Se Sisto V avesse solo immaginato che quelli erano i materiali destinati all’imbalsamazione del suo velo mortale, li avrebbe entrambi fatti marcire in fortezza, dopo aver loro perduta l’anima in sempiterno. Ma, una volta giunto il momento di reclamare per sè quel faraonico trattamento, e scoperto l’inganno, non sarebbe più stato in grado di nuocere a chicchessia, e, pertanto non v’era nulla da temere.
Dopo aver dato l’ordine di sigillare la cella, una volta compiuta l’opera, il Segretario rientrò nei Sacri Palazzi.
Il grande salone era deserto. Figurarsi se l’Eminentissimo Cardinal Bibliotecario poteva essere, per una volta al suo tavolo di lavoro.
Meglio così, avrebbe potuto compiere indisturbato la propria ricerca.
Per prima cosa controllò se dallo stipo delle chiavi ne mancasse una. C’erano tutte.
Cominciò quindi a saggiare una ad una tutte le serrature presenti, ma nessuna corrispondeva.
Credeva di conoscere a menadito la biblioteca, in ogni suo più oscuro anfratto.
Evidentemente però, l’Architetto aveva riservato a sè un luogo segreto.
Provò allora a mettersi nei panni di Leonangelo; a ragionare con la fantasia dell’artista.
E si ricordò, improvvisamente, di una discussione avuta con lui, forse trent’anni addietro.
“Sai, Cesare, qual è stata la più grande conquista dell’Architettura? Senza dubbio l’arco, che ha permesso la proiezione delle costruzioni verso l’alto, scaricando le forze a terra, e alleggerendole nello stesso tempo”.
E il segreto dell’arco, glielo aveva ben spiegato, sta tutto nella chiave di volta.
Ma certo, ecco cosa doveva cercare: un’arcata che alloggiasse nella sua chiave, la serratura per quella chiave.
Il cuore accelerò il suo battito; segno certo che aveva colto nel segno. L’elegante volta soprastante i grandi armadi degli incunaboli.
Da sempre il suo scorcio preferito dell’intera biblioteca.
Concentrò tutta la potenza visiva di cui disponeva, al suo centro geometrico, ma non gli riuscì di scoprire alcunchè di significativo.
In verità i suoi quasi 52 anni cominciavano a farsi sentire, sotto questo aspetto, e, inoltre, non era mai stato un occhio di falco.
Non senza sforzo, trascinò dappresso un tavolo, cui sormontò una sedia, sulla quale, a sua volta, salì.
Era ancora parecchio distante, ma gli parve di intravedere un’ombratura nell’ornato della pietra angolare.
Aveva assolutamente necessità di una lunga scala, una di quelle in dotazione delle squadre di manutentori della Fabbrica, di parecchi piedi d’altezza.
Un capo operaio che gli doveva vera riconoscenza, oltre all’obbedienza, cui la proverbiale indolenza romana sapeva sempre come sottrarsi, la approntò nel breve volgere di mezz’ora.
“Baronio, finalmente!” La voce petulante del cardinal Carafa, lo sorprese mentre si preparava a salire la scala.
“Sua Santità mi ha ordinato di occuparmi della biblioteca. Figuriamoci, ne ho già piene le tasche di queste quattro scartoffie impolverate. Ho ben altri affari più importanti da sbrigare, io. Per cui, ora, le intimo di rimanere qui, e, soprattutto, che non mi si disturbi oltre.
“State tranquillo, Eminenza, ho già terminato tutti i compiti che il Santo Padre mi aveva affidato.
Potete tornare ai vostri altissimi ed onerosi uffici, e perdonate l’incomodo che, pur involontariamente, vi ho arrecato. Prometto che non accadrà più”.
“E stia attento a non ammazzarsi con quella scala”, se ne andò bofonchiando il Porporato, non certo per un sentimento di paterna sollecitudine nei confronti del suo vicario, quanto, piuttosto, per il timore di doverlo rimpiazzare durante il periodo necessario alla nomina del successore.
Ora nella grande sala si poteva sentire soltanto il respiro di Cesare, reso affannoso dalla precaria scalata, e dall’ansia di un’imminente rivelazione.
L’ombreggiatura indefinita che dianzi aveva scorta, si andava sempre più precisamente delineando, come un foro dai contorni sinuosi e simmetrici. La toppa di una serratura!

ROMA, 30 giugno 1607
L’Eminentissimo Cardinale di Santa Romana Chiesa Cesare Baronio, si lasciò cadere sfinito sulla poltrona, unico lusso nella semplicissima cella di Santa Maria in Vallicella, eletta a propria residenza fin dal lontano 1575.
L’intera sua intensa vita, gli passò innanzi, veloce come il vento. Si rivide fanciullo a Sora, e poi adolescente, in una Napoli rifulgente di luce e fermenti, intraprendere gli studi di diritto, coronati dalla Laurea, conseguita Magna cum Laude in una ancora più coinvolgente Roma. Non già voce interiore gli aveva insinuato dubbi sulla prosecuzione di una carriera accademica, che pareva destinata ad ambiziosi traguardi.
Il viaggio premio in Francia, a Parigi e nei Castelli della Loira, era stato sconvolgente, per le implicazioni intellettuali, emozionali, e, vivaddio, fisiche. E quale giovane uomo, del resto, non reagirebbe così, alla scoperta del piacere sensuale e del primo sentimento amoroso? In più, la sua profonda e tenera sensibilità, posta di fronte alle meraviglie artistiche di Fontainebleau e di Cloux, dove erano tuttora tangibili le presenze dominanti di Francesco I e di Leonardo da Vinci, aveva riportato un’impronta decisiva e indelebile. Tanto che, di ritorno a Roma, l’incontro fatale con Filippo Neri, aveva gettato il seme della più sincera vocazione, nel fertilissimo terreno della sua anima.
Il richiamo alla vita religiosa, fu ben più forte della opposizione tenace dei genitori, che non poterono, in alcun modo, impedirne l’ingresso nella Congregazione dell’Oratorio, presso la Chiesa di San Gerolamo della Carità.
L’amore per l’Arte, la Letteratura e la Filosofia non trovò ostacolo nel passaggio alla vita ecclesiale, anzi, fu da questa ulteriormente arricchito. La frequentazione delle case di Michelangelo e di Tomaso dè Cavalieri, l’amicizia con Leonangelo, che tanto avevano influito sulla sua crescita estetica, continuarono, e, addirittura, crebbero.
Quando venne definitivamente consacrato Sacerdote, il ventisette Maggio 1564, la sua prima Messa fu celebrata in suffragio del Buonarroti, morto a Febbraio, con la commossa partecipazione di tutta la cerchia degli amici e degli ammiratori. Sotto il papato di Gregorio XIII poi, la sua fama letteralmente dilagò negli ambienti curiali, grazie alla sua opera di revisione del Martyrologium Romanum cum Notationibus Caesaris Baronii, e degli Annales Ecclesiastici.
Il Cardinal Peretti, favorevolmente impressionato dalle sue eccelse qualità intellettuali, sul finire degli anni settanta, lo aveva chiamato al suo fianco come Segretario particolare nonchè curatore del suo notevole patrimonio librario personale. Erano stati anni di studi profondi e sereni, nella quiete della grande villa sovrastante le Terme di Diocleziano, sull’Esquilino, progettata dall’amico Leonangelo, in cui il Cardinale si era volontariamente ritirato, per non entrare in collisione patente con Papa Boncompagni.
La salita al Soglio del Peretti, nell’ottantacinque, l’aveva proiettato nel vivo cuore pulsante del potere Pontificio, di cui imparò ben presto a riconoscere intrighi e splendori. Al fianco di Sisto V, che lo volle anche Prefetto della sua biblioteca, fu attore di primo ruolo in ogni questione politica, economica, dottrinale e artistica che potesse in quegli anni interessare la Santa Sede.
Alla morte del Peretti fu ben lieto, però e perciò, di abbandonare quell’universo di sublimi astuzie e apostolici sofismi, nei quali, suo malgrado, era divenuto maestro, reimmergendosi nella balsamica Gioia della contemplazione di Dio, come successore di Filippo Neri a Superiore Generale della Congregazione dell’Oratorio. Poi, nel novantasei, l’apice della carriera, con la creazione a Cardinale da parte di Clemente VIII, che lo chiamò nuovamente in Curia come Cardinal Bibliotecario di Santa Romana Chiesa: finalmente anche de jure a capo dell’amata biblioteca.

Ci vuole tutto il sangue freddo, e la capacità di non farsi travolgere dalle emozioni, maturati in anni di sala operatoria, per procedere nella lettura del memoriale di Aliprandi. Angelo fatica non poco a conservare il distacco necessario alla lucidità di giudizio, quando il suo istinto lo indurrebbe invece ad urlare, e fuggire il più lontano possibile. Vedere le sue immagini di lattante, fanciullo, protervo giovane maschio e uomo realizzato, gli comunica vivo il disagio di chi subisce violenza della propria intimità. Prova contemporaneamente ostilità nei confronti del vecchio sacerdote, e tenera compassione per l’adolescente combattuto che doveva essere stato. Cresciuto nella tensione costante sviluppata dalla necessità di obbedire ad un precetto atavico e ineludibile, e dalla passione violenta per lo studio, il sacerdozio altro non era stato che lo strumento al servizio di quest’ultima, e, non supportato da autentica vocazione, non aveva saputo creare ostacoli al primo imperativo. “Ce n’è abbastanza per riempire un intero capitolo di psicopatologia comportamentale, del migliore trattato di psichiatria”, medita Angelo, sinceramente ammirato per la raffinatezza logica della quale, talvolta, la follia sa ammantarsi. “La lucidità più assoluta, in un disegno intrinsecamente malato”. Disegno che si dipana a ritroso nei secoli. Aliprandi ripercorre il proprio albero genealogico (di cui Angelo stesso, ora, rappresenta la foglia più verde) attraverso rami sempre maggiori, fino al tronco, che affonda le sue radici vetuste, nel cuore del sedicesimo secolo. Un susseguirsi di ignoti progenitori, beffardamente irridenti alla sua tardiva presa di coscienza. Quasi si vergogna di non riconoscerne alcuno, a dispetto dei titoli altisonanti dei quali certi si fregiano. Un Cardinale Ubaldo, una Beata Angelica, e scienziati, e artisti, e senatori. Come tutto è destinato all’oblio, nella ristretta cultura specialistica dei nostri tempi.
Un nome tra i più ancestrali, rimanda però qualche richiamo alla sua memoria. Emilio de’ Cavalieri. “Chi era mai costui?” Qualcuno, gli sembra, da potere associare alla sua dilettantesca competenza musicale. Accende il computer, digita il nome sulla finestra onniscente di Google, e in pochi secondi, ecco affluire dalla biblioteca dell’etere, i dati richiesti. Musicista della seconda metà del Cinquecento, di nobile famiglia Romana. Attivo a Firenze, dove entra a far parte dell’Accademia, o Camerata, dei Bardi. Ecco il perchè di quell’alert mnemonico. Si tratta di uno dei primi autori del suo genere musicale preferito: l’Opera Lirica. Quello che non sapeva, è che egli avesse un fratello, ed il loro padre fosse Tommaso, o Tomaso, dè Cavalieri. Il giovane amato da Michelangelo. Finalmente la coincidenza, il punto di fuga da cui scaturiscono le due linee direttrici dell’esistenza di Leone Aliprandi: Michelangelo Buonarroti, e il percorso genetico della propria stirpe. Stranamente però, le tracce di Emilio e Mario, non convergono su di esso, ma affiancano soltanto il nome di Tomaso Cavalieri, figura che nella linea di sangue resta a latere, in posizione affettuosamente putativa. In realtà, la polla primigenia è priva di connotazione, come ignote sono le vene che la alimentano.

Hanno entrambi dormito poco, e nonostante la rasatura accurata, i segni della stanchezza sono ben visibili sui volti dei due uomini; del più anziano soprattutto. Dalle tazzine di raffinatissima fattura, l’aroma corroborante del caffè si spande per l’ampio ufficio, sobrio ed elegante nei caldi toni del legno lucente, quale si addice al comandante delle Guardie Svizzere Pontificie. Aloysius Gruenwald ha ascoltato, senza interromperlo, il rapporto del Caporale sull’operazione investigativa da poco conclusa.
“Brillante iniziativa, Cedrìc, anche se desidero conoscere anticipatamente ogni attività di servizio dei miei uomini”.
“Non volevo disturbare il suo riposo, Comandante. Le prometto che non commetterò lo stesso errore una seconda volta”.
“Un passaggio segreto, dunque. Una via di fuga alternativa, e più sicura rispetto al Passetto di Borgo, di cui si era persa ogni traccia. Come Capo della Guarnigione, e responsabile primo della sicurezza di Sua Santità e della Sede Apostolica, sono stato messo al corrente, all’atto della mia nomina, di una tale quantità di notizie riservate e misteriose, da superare in numero quelle trasmesse al Cardinal Segretario di Stato. Eppure non ero in possesso di questa. Da almeno quattro secoli non se ne fa menzione in alcun documento. Ritengo che il Papa stesso non ne abbia nozione”.
“È ben singolare dunque,” Ribatte Cedrìc, “che Don Paolo Davalle lo conosca, e ne abbia fatto uso proprio ieri notte. Stando almeno al fiuto di Ludwig”.
“La posizione del sacerdote indubbiamente si complica, ma ribadisco la necessità di discrezione. Richiedo una sorveglianza cauta, ma continua, nelle prossime ore, e voglio che sia tu, Caporale, ad occupartene. Ritieniti esentato da ogni altro servizio ordinario. Riferirai e prenderai ordini solo da me, bypassando la consueta gerarchia”.
Cedrìc scatta sugli attenti, in attesa del congedo del superiore, che, poco formalmente lo attua con una cordiale pacca sulla spalla.
Nel corridoio fuori dall’ufficio, scortato dal Comandante in seconda, Angelo Vallesi si avanza, manifestando un’evidente stanchezza. “Buon giorno, Professore,” Dice il giovane dopo aver salutato l’Ufficiale. “Carissimo Caporale, buon giorno a lei, e, speriamo, meno movimentato di ieri”.
Cedrìc riprende il suo percorso, sparendo oltre l’angolo, mentre i due, ricevuto l’invito, varcano la soglia dell’ufficio.
“Si accomodi, Professore”, invita il Colonnello indicando l’ampio divano di pelle, “le faccio subito servire il caffè, intanto che do alcune disposizioni al collega”.
Dopo un breve scambio verbale, e i saluti di prassi, il Vice-Comandante si accomiata, per trasmettere a sua volta gli ordini ricevuti, e Gruenwald va a sedersi accanto all’ospite. “Le notizie dall’Ospedale sono confortanti, nella loro sostanziale assenza”, esordisce Angelo con voce lievemente arrochita per l’assenza pressochè totale di sonno, e, forse ancor più, per il lungo, dolcissimo amplesso di cui ancora sente l’effetto rilassante ed esaltante allo stesso tempo. “Uscito da qui, mi recherò personalmente al Gemelli per fare il punto della situazione col Professor Gaudenzi e i colleghi rianimatori. Poi le sottoporrò un rapporto più dettagliato”.
“Professor Vallesi”, riprende sicuro il militare, “lei è venuto, per caso a conoscenza, di qualche studio o ricerca di Monsignor Aliprandi o di Don Davalle, circa l’assetto architettonico-strategico della Sacra Città?”.
Angelo si mantiene sulle sue, guardando interrogativo il Comandante, quasi a voler ribadire la propria lontananza dalle attività tanto dell’uno, quanto dell’altro e soggiunge: “Sono stato chiamato per una consulenza, ed ho incontrato per la prima volta i due religiosi soltanto l’altro ieri”.
“Non abbia timori, Professore. Sono ben certo della sua assoluta estraneità a intrighi, complotti o segreti inerenti allo Stato Pontificio. Questo non è neppure in discussione. Però è un dato di fatto che ci si è trovato in mezzo. Negli ultimi due giorni, lei ha trascorso parecchie ore con Sua Eccellenza Aliprandi, decisamente più di quelle necessarie ad una normale raccolta anamnestica, completamento di esame obiettivo, e definizione di indirizzo clinico-terapeutico. So di cosa sto parlando: sono anch’io laureato in Medicina, pur non avendo, beninteso, le sue competenze. Inoltre ho appreso della sua visita alla Biblioteca Angelica, dalla quale è uscito con una certa quantità di materiale; sicuramente antichi Codici Medici, indispensabili ai suoi studi sull’immunoterapia oncologica”.
L’ironia neppure sottile delle parole e del tono di Gruenwald, rivela ad Angelo la consapevolezza di essere come un libro aperto al cospetto di quei due gelidi occhi indagatori.
“Ripeto, Professore, non si senta accusato o messo sotto processo. Al contrario sono io che le domando un aiuto per la soluzione di un caso di cui, con le mie sole forze, so di non poter venire a capo. E per cominciare la nostra collaborazione, le rivelerò un segreto di stato”.
Nessun particolare della scoperta del Caporale viene trascurato nel racconto del Colonnello, compresi i sospetti nei confronti del Segretario. Angelo, a sua volta, come si era ripromesso, esprime le perplessità sue e di Francesca, sull’operato di Don Paolo. Quindi, oramai del tutto rassicurato e fiducioso della totale integrità di Aloysius Gruenwald, svela i particolari dei suoi due incontri con Padre Leone; Approfondendone alcuni (come la misteriosa figura dell’architetto rinascimentale, discepolo di Michelangelo), e sorvolando su altri, vedi la paternità di Monsignor Aliprandi. Al termine del colloquio, più di un’ora dopo, i due uomini appaiono sollevati di una parte di peso: avendolo condiviso con l’altro. La stretta di mano vigorosa e sincera, suggella il loro patto fra uomini per i quali la rettitudine morale è contemporaneamente forma e sostanza.
“Professore, mi raccomando. Lei è un professionista della salute, io della sicurezza... In questo momento io non sono malato, lei è in pericolo... È lei, quindi che si sta inoltrando nella mia giurisdizione. Potrebbero presentarsi all’improvviso situazioni di allarme. Faccia sempre riferimento a me. In ogni caso. Non prenda iniziative senza avermi prima consultato, e, se costretto, me le comunichi appena possibile. Un mio uomo di fiducia sarà, quanto più spesso pronto ad intervenire in suo aiuto.
Professore, lo ripeto, NON è un gioco”.

Aloysius Gruenwald, nel suo ufficio, sta inutilmente tentando di illuminare il suo Vice sulle ultime acquisizioni della telecamera volante. L’arrivo di Cedrìc lo solleva dall’improba fatica. “Vada pure, Maggiore, torni ai suoi compiti, provvederò io a fornire gli ordini al Caporale”.
“Ma chi ce l’ha mandato,” sbotta infine il Colonnello. “Dover sopportare quell’inetto, solo per ossequio alle esigenze della nobiltà nera romana! E poi ci meravigliamo se sul nostro Corpo militare piovono critiche sempre più frequenti... Se questi sono i vertici. Ok, Cedrìc, siediti. È inutile che mi sfoghi con te del fatto che dalla Segreteria di Stato mi abbiano risposto sempre e solo picche a riguardo. Su cerca di mettere un po’ d’ordine tu, nei dati scaricati dalla flying spie. Sei l’unico che può farlo. Problemi a Santa Maria Maggiore?”. “No, Comandante. Ordinaria amministrazione”. Mente, il giovane, per evitargli ulteriori pensieri circa i progetti pomeridiani del Professore. “Vado subito a visionare i dati”. “Un momento, ragazzo. Voglio che tu sappia che il tuo lavoro è altamente apprezzato da noi tutti.
Ho appena sottoposto al Santo Padre il tuo nominativo per un’alta Onorificenza. È il primo gradino... Un giorno dietro questa scrivania dovrai esserci tu... È mio fermo impegno... Parola di Comandante”.
“Scusa se ti ho chiesto di raggiungermi qui”, dice Cedrìc facendo accomodare Angelo nel Sancta Sanctorum informatico della Santa Sede, “ma non posso abbandonare un solo minuto la mia postazione. Ecco il materiale inviato dal Professor Gaudenzi. Io non tornerò oggi con te a Santa Maria. Verrà il soldato Hubertus. È in gamba, ma ne avrà abbastanza di sorvegliare te. Prega tu la signorina Barbieri di rimanere in Vaticano”. “Stai tranquillo, Cedrìc. Ho già convinto Francesca, e non è stato facile, credimi, a non uscire. Me lo ha giurato, ma, a scanso di equivoci, falle dare ugualmente un’occhiata. Discreta, mi raccomando”.
In auto, al fianco del soldato Hubertus Duvivier, più romano che svizzero, tanto nell’aspetto quanto nella comunicativa giovialità, Angelo tenta invano di esaminare la strumentazione medica richiesta. Giunto a Santa Maria Maggiore, egli si rende conto di conoscere più a fondo le avventure amorose del giovane che non il funzionamento di quel particolare endoscopio. Antonio Liverani sta attendendo accanto al portone di ingresso, sotto l’ampio porticato. L’afflusso turistico in Basilica, a quell’ora pomeridiana, è notevole: comitive con guida, pellegrini singoli, Romani devoti alla Madonna dei miracoli, ed una moltitudine di Religiosi delle più svariate etnie, alcuni scuri nella pelle e nello sguardo. Hubertus segue i due di qualche passo, i giovani ed allenati occhi scandaglianti l’ambiente a 360°, un orecchio teso ai rumori di fondo, e l’altro in contatto con la centrale operativa tramite un discreto auricolare. Dopo avere esaminato l’interno della Cappella Sistina, ne esce appostandosi sui gradoni di accesso, per lasciare piena libertà e discrezione ai due studiosi.
L’aureo Altare viene apparecchiato in guisa di carrello di sala endoscopica. Lo strumento modificato, si snoda come un oscuro ed inquietante serpente tentatore. “L’accesso migliore”, esordisce Antonio indicando una grossa borchia di ottone all’angolo della lastra sepolcrale, “è qui. Praticheremo un foro che poi potrà essere agevolmente coperto”. Il rivestimento marmoreo non oppone alcuna resistenza alla punta diamantata del trapano. Il repentino cambio di tonalità dell’acuto sibilo, ne testimonia l’apertura. “Ecco, Professore, ora può introdurre lo strumento”.
La fredda ed intensa luce di punta, svela ad Angelo la massiccia cassa all’interno del loculo. Egli segue le immagini sul monitor ad alta definizione collegato all’endoscopio. Si vede distintamente la parte anteriore della bara. “Guarda attentamente, Antonio. Adesso questo gioiello mi permetterà di eseguire una sorta di Risonanza Magnetica tridimensionale che ci rivelerà nei dettagli il contenuto della sepoltura. I contorni, dapprima spettrali, cominciano a definirsi, mano a mano che l’elaborazione del computer procede. “Santo Cielo”, esclama Angelo, “è incredibile! La bara ha un doppio fondo, e i corpi tumulati sono due”. I particolari sono inequivocabili, anche all’occhio meno esperto del sovrintendente: due crani, due scheletri completi sovrapposti e separati da un setto, quasi due gemelli all’interno di un unico utero, uno dei quali, l’inferiore, di un buon terzo più lungo dell’altro.

ROME, Vatican, November 1563
The slender candle flame, was slightly rejecting the dark, that inexorable, then regained his whole dominance. The wind, which intruded into the structure under construction, creating sudden and unexpected bursts, made her insecure in the gnarled and even firm hands of the Old Man.
He, however, was successful each time to keep it on; and, even if it did turn off, this would not be an impediment to complete the path, so precise and accurate, in his mind, the knowledge of where they were, and even the large part not yet built. The man who followed him, a giant as nimble as strong, bore on his shoulders, not without apparent effort, a massive chest, reflecting cold metallic glows, when tangentially hit by the uncertain light of the facula. They didn't speak, the only thing that could be heard was the rhythmic sound of footsteps proceeding with varying acoustic thicknesses, and the shortness of breath : the one for the trouble, the other for the years. The flutter of wings of a bird, disturbed in his night sleep, startled them. "Master, allow me a brief rest".
Pleaded the tired youngster. "Not now," replied the old man, "the time looms, and everything has to be done before dawn. Hold on, son, strengthen your great strength in the firmness of thought ". These words had the effect of a balm giving a new vigour to the man’s limbs, and they proceeded in silence.
Turning, occasionally, on the pretext of revealing the path, the proud old man felt rising from the depths of his soul, the usual feeling of loving, fatherly pride, against a loyal disciple. Many rumours were mostly malicious and defamatory on the relationship between Michelangelo and the Cherub-looking young man, later to become a mighty and nice looking man, with a deep and penetrating gaze. He was not exactly his son, not being direct fruit of his seed, yet he was born for his active intervention, and never a father had shown himself more loving and solicitous towards his own offspring. And like Pater et Magister, the younger, in filial respect, was addressing to him. The old man kept, etched in memory, vivid, indelible, like the characters engraven upon the plates of Moses by the God's fire finger, every moment and every feeling overwhelming, from which he had felt overwhelmed in that fatal May 29th of 1523.
In Florence, the travail of Monna Catherine was completed, and the bright tuscan noon kissed the eyes, already curious and inquiring, of Leonangelo. Michelangelo himself had driven, connoisseur of human anatomy and physiology, the commitment of the mature fetus within the birth canal, facilitating with the more correct movement of restitution, the slipping of the shoulders and the complete coming out of the baby. On the other hand, after the perfect conduct of the entire gestation, could not risk to compromise the sublime work, for the incompetence or empirical carelessness of an obstetrician, or the inexperience of a Barber-surgeon of low alloy.
A true miracle had accomplished. The laws of nature subverted, or rather, bent to the will of human ingenuity.
Michelangelo had thoroughly examined the newborn. He was perfect, and perfectly vital. Each part harmoniously and functionally related, in the whole of the divine machine that is Man.

ROME, 18 February 1564
The harsh winter that year, reaped victims in the weaker sectors of the population. Children and the elderly, were affected by mysterious shaking fevers, which stirred up rapidly, triggering strong and purulent catarrhs, fatal obstacle to the respiratory functions.
The physique of Michelangelo, although very strong, which had led almost to the threshold of eighty-nine years of age, suddenly gave way under their weight. Until a few days ahead, he still had maneuvered, with unusual force, hammer and chisel, giving his final markers in a new marble Pietà.
Strange coincidence: his reputation of outstanding sculptor, had risen from a lamentation of Mary over dead son (commissioned nearly seventy years earlier by Cardinal Villier de la Grolaye) and was setting now, through the same theme, painful and yet sweet.
However, due to the exudate, which was gradually filling up the fan spaces of the left lung, the forces and the lucidity deserted him. Spread in a small bed, waxy and wrinkled, twitched away off in the ineluctable grasp of death.
The frantic and superficial breathing, freed in the air mournfully foreboding emissions and humors. The gurgling rattle, dominated the room acoustics.
Around the couch, mute and horrified, Daniele da Volterra, Tomaso de ' Cavalieri and Leonangelo.
The hand, stripped and deformed, heaved, as if to touch something in the air. Or to deliver, sensed at the same time the two beloved.
That mysterious inheritance passed permanently in their hands.
Michelangelo was dead.

ROME, Vatican, June 15th 1590
The last brick was placed.
The great Dome stood, majestically proud, to its creator's perennial honor, towards that Roman sky that sometimes shows already a glimpse of Paradise.
The old man's eyes were unable to hold back tears, which made their way into countless rivulets, in the deep furrows of wrinkles of his face.
From the base of the obelisk, where he was, amidst a curious and admired throng, the new architectural perspective was mighty: almost work by the hand of God itself.
He did a pretty good job.
As mere executor, sure, but still a nice work.
Who else ever could accomplish that cyclopean feat in less than two years?
Certainly not the two architects now nominally in charge of the Fabbrica, which had budgeted ten years.
Nice guys overall Fontana and Della Porta.
All the moral and material credit, it's true, went to them, but to him it did not matter; and though they had never objected to any prescription.
Even four years before, moreover, Domenico Fontana had done nothing but bring back and implement its indications and calculations were made about the number of winches, ropes, of men and horses, to hoist masterfully the mighty Egyptian obelisk in front of the Basilica.
For goodness sake, Fontana could technically have done it alone: (though, perhaps, he'd miss the ready lucidity to shout with all the air in his body, at the sight of the ropes, that POUR WATER ON THE ROPES, whose author, after four more years people told).
The fact was that the Obelisk had to be erected at that precise point and at that precise altitude above sea level, in compliance with mandatory provisions of the same Michelangelo, known only to him (and, indeed, to Cavalieri, but now oppressed by the mystique wave, which had overwhelmed him lately, just didn't care over these issues anymore).
And the order had been complied. To the millimeter.
He had had the approbation a few days later when, seated on the Northwest Tower of Castel Sant'Angelo, equipped with an optical instrument of Leonardo, unknown to all, tangentially looking to the cusp of the Obelisk at its intersection with the drum of the dome still unfinished, had intercepted a point on the same, reflecting to the magical mechanical eye, an intense blue light.
The tiles matched perfectly revealing the sublime mosaic conceived by a superior Mind.
A sudden cackle of children who were running carefree in the crowd drew him out of the abyss of memories, that had slipped in.

The air in the basement of Castel Sant'Angelo, had become unbreathable, a sign that the taxidermist was proceeding in his work.
In a bowl, at his feet, were gathered the intestines, spleen, pancreas and stomach, with all the omenta, while on one side layed separate, the large brownish mass of the liver, with heart and lungs.
The Master sector was now filling the thoracic and abdominal cavities, with exotic spices and shredded of various corundum and lapis lazuli, after having covered them of the finest balms and myrrhs of Arabia, extracts from animal glands, and who knows what else, in order to preserve the body against putrefactive processes.
If Sixtus V had only imagined that those were the materials for the embalming of his mortal veil, he would have made both get rot in fortress, after their lost soul into everlasting. But, once it was time to reclaim for itself that pharaonic treatment, and discovered the deception, he would no longer be able to harm anyone, and therefore there was nothing to fear.
After giving the order to seal off the cell, once completed the work, the Secretary returned in the Sacred Halls.
The great Hall was deserted. Imagine if his Eminence Cardinal Librarian could be, for one time at his work table.
Better that way, he could fulfill undisturbed his own research.
First, he checked to see if a key from the Cabinet was missing. The keys were all there.
He then started to test one by one all the present locks, but none matched.
He believed to know by heart the library, in every obscure corner.
Obviously though, the architect had reserved to himself a secret place.
He tried then to put himself in the shoes of Leonangelo; reasoning with the imagination of the artist.
And he remembered, suddenly, a discussion he had with him, maybe 30 years before.
"You know, Caesar, what was the greatest achievement of Architecture? No doubt the arc, which allowed the projection of the constructions upward, by downloading the forces on the ground, and making them lighter at the same time. "
And the secret of the arc, he had well explained him, it's all in the keystone.
Of course, here's what to look for: an arcade that dwelled in his key, the lock for that key.
The heart quickened his pulse; sure sign that had hit the mark. The elegant arch above the large wardrobes of the incunabula.
Always his favorite glimpse of the entire library.
He concentrated all the visual power at its disposal, to its geometric center, but was not able to find anything significant.
In truth his nearly 52 years were beginning to be felt, in this respect, and, moreover, he had never been a hawkeye.
Not without effort, trudged nearby a table, on which he then surmounted a chair, on which, in turn, he went up.
It was still quite distant, but he seemed to glimpse a shade in the ornate of the cornerstone.
He had absolutely no need of a long staircase, one of those included in the Factory’s maintainers teams, of several feet in height.
A foreman who owed him true gratitude as well to obedience, where/to which/ the proverbial Roman indolence always knew how to evade, he computed in the short span of half an hour.
"Baronio, finally!" The petulant voice of cardinal Carafa, surprised him as he prepared to climb the ladder.
"His Holiness has ordered me to take care of the library. Never mind, I've already the pockets filled of these four dusty paperworks. I have other more important business to attend to. So now, I intimate you to remain here, and most importantly, don't bother me any further.
"Don't worry, your Eminence, I already finished all the tasks that the Holy Father had entrusted me.
You can return to your high and expensive offices, and forgive the inconvenience which, even unintentionally, I caused. I promise it won't happen again ".
"And be careful not to kill yourself with that scale," the Cardinal went away grumbling, certainly not for a sense of fatherly solicitude towards his vicar, but rather because of the fear of having to replace him during the period necessary for the appointment of a successor.
Now in the big hall you could hear only the breath of Caesar, made wheezing from the shaky climbing, and the anxiety of an imminent revelation.
The undefined shading that he had just seen, was more precisely emerging as a hole with sinuous and symmetric contours. The patch of a lock!

ROME, January 30th 1607
His Eminence the Cardinal of the Holy Roman Church Cesare Baronio, sank down exhausted on the chair, only luxury in the simple cell of Santa Maria in Vallicella, elected to his residence since 1575.
His entire intense lifetime, went through before him, fast as the wind. He saw himself child in Sora, and then in a Naples refulgent with light and ferments, he engaged the study of law, culminating after the graduation, achieved Magna honors in an even more engaging Roma. No inner voice had suggested doubts about the continuation of an academic career, which seemed destined to ambitious goals.
The reward travel to France, to Paris and the castles of the Loire, was shocking, for the intellectual, emotional and, physical implications. And as a young man, after all,he wouldn’t react this way to the discovery of the sensual pleasure and love feeling? In addition, his deep and tender sensitiveness, facing the artistic wonders of Fontainebleau and Cloux, where were still the tangible presences of Francis I and Leonardo da Vinci, had brought a decisive and indelible impression. So that, on his return to Rome, the fatal meeting with Filippo Neri, had thrown the seed of the truest vocation on the fertile soil of his soul.
The call to religious life, was stronger than the tenacious opposition of his parents, who could not, in any way, prevent his entry into the Congregation of the Oratory, at the Church of St. Jerome of Charity.
Thelove for art, literature and philosophy found no obstacle in stepping into the life of the Church, in fact, he was from this further enriched. The attendance at the houses of Michelangelo and Tomaso de ' Cavalieri, the friendship with Leonangelo, who both had influenced his aesthetic growth, continued, and even increased.
When he was finally consecrated Priest, on May 27th 1564, his first Mass was celebrated for the repose of Buonarroti, who died in February, with the heartfelt participation of the entire circle of friends and admirers. Under the papacy of Gregory XIII then, his fame literally swept in curial environments, thanks to his work of revision of the Martyrologium Romanum cum Notationibus Caesaris Baronii, and of the Annales Ecclesiastici.
Cardinal Peretti, impressed by his lofty intellectual qualities, in the late 70s, had called him to her side as personal Secretary and curator of his remarkable library fortune. They were years of deep and serene studies, in the quiet of the great villa overlooking the baths of Diocletian, on the Esquiline Hill, designed by his friend Leonangelo, where the Cardinal had voluntarily withdrawn, not to collide with Pope Boncompagni.
The climb to the Soglio of Peretti, in eighty-five, had projected into the living heart of the Papal power, he learned very soon to recognize its intrigues and splendour. Alongside of Sixtus V, who wanted him even as prefect of his library, he was major player in every political, economic, artistic and doctrinal issue that would concern the Holy See during those years.
At the moment of the death of Peretti he was pleased, however, to abandon that universe of sublime cunning and Apostolic sophistries, in which, in spite of himself, he had become maestro, by plunging himself over the balmy Joy of the contemplation of God, as the successor of Filippo Neri as superior general of the Congregation of the Oratory. Then, in ninety-six, at the pinnacle of his career, with the nomination as cardinal by Pope Clement VIII, who called him back in the Curia as Cardinal Librarian of the Holy Roman Church: finally also de jure head of the beloved library.

It takes all your coolness, and the ability to not get carried away by emotions, accrued over years of surgery, to proceed in reading the memoir of Aliprandi. Angelo struggled to retain the necessary detachment to the clarity of judgment, when his instinct would cause him to scream, and run away as far as possible. Seeing his pictures as infant, child, insolent young male and man made, communicates him the discomfort of those who suffer violence of their intimacy. He simultaneously feels hostility towards the old priest, and tender compassion for the striven adolescent that he must have been. Raised in constant tension developed from the need to obey to an ancestral and inescapable precept, and the violent passion for studying, the priesthood was the instrument at the service of the latter, and unsupported by real vocation, had not been able to create obstacles to the first imperative. "There is enough to fill an entire chapter of behavioral psychopathology, of the best Treaty of Psychiatry", Angelo ponders, genuinely admired for the logic refinement which sometimes madness knows how to cloak itself. "Absolute lucidity, in a inherently sick design". Draft that unfolds backwards over the centuries. Aliprandi traces its family tree (of which Angelo himself, now, is the greenest leaf) through branches, up to the trunk, which has its ancient roots in the heart of the 16th century. A succession of unknown ancestors, mockingly loud to its belated awareness. He is almost ashamed to not recognize some, despite of the high-sounding titles of which certain bear. A Cardinal Ubaldo, a Blessed Angelica, and scientists, and artists, and senators. As everything is destined to oblivion, in the narrow specialized culture of our times.
One of the most ancestral name, refers however some reference to his memory. Emilio de ' Cavalieri. "Who was this man?" Someone, it seems, to be able to bind to its amateurish musical competence. He turns on the computer, types the name on Google’s omniscient window, and within seconds, here's, flowing from the library of the ether, the requested data. Musician from the second half of the 16th century, of a noble Roman family. Active in Florence, where he joined the Accademia, or Camerata dei Bardi. Here's why that mnemonicalert. It is one of the first authors of his favorite music genre: Opera. What he didn't know is that he had a brother, and their father was Thomas, or Tomaso, de ' Cavalieri. The young man loved by Michelangelo. Finally the coincidence, the vanishing point from which spring the two guidelines of the existence of Leone Aliprandi: Michelangelo Buonarroti, and the genetic passage of his lineage. Strangely though, the traces of Emilio and Mario, do not converge on it, but only flank the name by Tomaso Cavalieri, figure that in the bloodline remains in the margins, in a affectionately putative position. In fact, the primigenia springlet has no connotation, as unknown are the veins that feed it.

They both slept little, and despite the accurate shave, the signs of fatigue are clearly visible on the faces of the two men; the eldest especially. From the small cups of refined handiwork, the invigorating aroma of coffee spreads in the large office, sober and elegant in the warm tones of the gleaming wood, which befits the Pontifical Swiss Guard Commander. Aloysius Gruenwald listened without interrupting him, the Corporal’s report on the just ended investigative operation.
"Brilliant initiative, Cedrìc, although I would like to know in advance every service activity of my men."
"I didn't want to disturb your rest, Commander. I promise you I won't make the same mistake a second time. "
"A secret passage, then. An alternative escape route, and more secure than the Passetto di Borgo, of which every trace was lost. As Chief of the Garrison, and first responsible of the security of his Holiness and of the Apostolic See, I have been made aware, at the time of my appointment, of a such large amount of confidential and mysterious information, to outnumber those transmitted to the Cardinal Secretary of State. Yet I was not in possession of this. For at least four centuries it was not mentioned in any document. I believe that the Pope himself has no notion of it. "
"Well then," Says Cedrìc , "is singular that Don Paolo Davalle knows it, and has used it just last night. At least according to Ludwig’s sense of smell ".
"The position of the priest is undoubtedly complicated, but I reiterate the need for discretion. I demand a cautious surveillance, but continuous, in the next few hours, and I want you, Corporal, to take care of him. Count yourself exempt from any other ordinary service. You will report and take orders only from me, bypassing the usual hierarchy ".
Cedrìc snaps to attention, waiting for the dismissal of the superior, who a little formally puts it into effect with a friendly pat on the back.
In the hallway outside the office, escorted by the second-in-command, Angel Vallesi advances, manifesting an obvious tiredness. "Good morning, Professor," says the young man after saying goodbye to the Officer. "Dearest Corporal, good day to you, and hopefully less eventful than yesterday."
Cedrìc resumes his path, disappearing over the corner, while the two, received the invitation, cross the threshold of the office.
"Have a seat, Professor", invites the Colonel indicating the large leather couch, "I now serve you a coffee, while I give some provisions to the colleague".
After a brief verbal exchange, and the greetings of praxis, the Vice-Commander prepares to convey in turn the received orders, and Gruenwald takes a seat next to the guest. "The news from the hospital are encouraging, in their substantial absence," Angelo hoarses with a slightly croaky voice for almost having no sleep, and, perhaps even more, for the long, sweet amplexus of which he still feels the effect, relaxing and uplifting at the same time. "Left here, I will go personally to the Gemelli Hospital to make a point of the situation with Professor Gaudenzi and the resuscitation colleagues. Then I will submit a more detailed report ".
"Professor Vallesi" resumes secure the military, "you came by any chance to know of any study or research by Monsignor Aliprandi or Don Davalle, about the architectural and strategic structure of the Sacred City?".
Angelo keeps himself on guard, watching interrogative the Commander, as if to reiterate its remoteness from the activities as much of one of them as the other one, and adds: "I was called for an advise, and I first met the two religious only the day before yesterday."
"Do not have fears, Professor. I am well sure its absolute alienation to intrigues or secrets relating to the Papal State. This is not even under discussion. But it is a fact that we only found in the middle. In the past two days, she spent several hours with his Excellency Aliprandi, far more than the ones that are required for an ordinary collection of medical history, a complete physical examination, and a definition of clinical-therapeutic address. No details of the discovery of the Corporal is overlooked in the story of Colonel, including the suspicions against the Secretary. Angelo, in turn, as he had promised, expresses his and Francesca’s misgivings, on the work of Don Paolo. So, now completely reassured and confident of the total integrity of Aloysius Gruenwald, reveals the details of his two meetings with Father Leone. Deepening some (like the mysterious figure of the renaissance architect, pupil of Michelangelo), and flying out of others, you see the authorship of Monsignor Aliprandi. At the end of the interview, more than an hour later, the two men appear raised of a portion of weight: having shared with each other. The vigorous and sincere handshake, seals their pact between men whose moral rectitude is both form and substance.
"Professor, I recommend. You are a health professional, I am a security one. .. Right now I'm not ill, you are in danger ... It is you, to go forward in my jurisdiction. There may be a sudden alarm situations. Always refer to me. In any case. Do not take initiatives without first consulting me, and, if forced, talk to me as soon as possible. One of my right hand men will be, more often willing to intervene on your behalf.

Aloysius Gruenwald, in his Office, is unnecessarily trying to illuminate his Deputy on the latest acquisitions of the flying camera. The arrival of Cedrìc lifts him from the unlikely effort. "Go ahead, major, go back to your duties, I will deliver the orders to the Corporal."
"But who did ever send him," the Colonel finally blurts out. "Having to put up with that inept, just to treat the needs of roman black nobility! And then we wonder if our Military Corps gets increasingly frequent raining down criticism. If these are the vertices. OK, Cedrìc, sit down. It is useless that I vent with you that by the Secretary of State I have been responded only with spades. Try to put some order, in the downloaded data from the flying spies. You are the only one who can do it. Problems in Santa Maria Maggiore? ". "No, Sir. Ordinary administration ". Lies the youngster, to avoid further thoughts about the afternoon projects of the Professor. "I'm going to see the data". "One moment, boy. I want you to know that your work is highly appreciated by us all.

"Sorry if I asked you to join me here," says Cedrìc accommodating Angelo in the computing Sancta Sanctorum of the Holy See, "but I can't give up for even one minute my post. Here's the materials sent by Professor Gaudenzi. Today I will not come back with you to Santa Maria. The soldier Hubertus will come. He's good, but he will have enough to supervise you. You pray miss Barbieri to remain in the Vatican ". "Don't worry, Cedrìc. I have already convinced Francesca, and it was not easy, believe me, not to go out. Driving, alongside the soldier Hubertus Duvivier, more roman than swiss, for the looks and for the communicative joviality, Angelo tries in vain to examine the medical equipment requested. Antonio Liverani is waiting next to the entrance door, under the porch. The tourist influx in the Basilica, at that time in the afternoon, is significant: groups, individual pilgrims, Romans devoted to the Madonna of miracles and a host of men of various ethnicities, some with dark skin and look. Hubertus follows the two for a few paces, the young and trained eyes scanning the environment in 360°, one ear strained to the background noise, and the other in touch with the operations centre through a discreet headset. After examining the Interior of the Sistine Chapel, he comes out of it lurking on the tiers of access, in order to allow complete freedom and discretion to the two scholars.
The Golden Altar is set in the guise of endoscopic room cart. The edited tool, unfolds as a dark and disturbing tempter serpent. "The best access", Antonio begins indicating a large brass stud at the corner of the tombstone, "is here. We will practice a hole which then can be easily covered ". The marble revetment does not oppose any resistance to the diamond tip of the drill bit. The sudden change of tone of the high-pitched hissing, testifies the opening. "Behold, Professor, now you can introduce the instrument".
The cold and intense light, reveals to Angelo the massive crate inside the tomb. He follows the images on the high-definition monitor connected to the endoscope. You see distinctly the front of the coffin. "Look closely, Antonio. Now this gem will allow me to run some kind of three-dimensional Magnetic Resonance imaging which will reveal in detail the contents of the grave. The outline, spectral at first, gradually begins to define while the processing computer proceeds. "Good heavens," says Angelo, "it’s awesome! The coffin has a double bottom, and the bodies buried are two. " The details are unambiguous, even to the less experienced eye of the superintendent: two skulls, two complete skeletons stacked and separated by a septum, almost two twins within a single uterus, one of which, the lower one,of one third longer than the other.

Nell’affrontare questo affascinante lavoro fotografico su Roma e il Lazio non mi nascondevo certo le notevoli difficoltà cui andavo incontro. Il«soggetto» è vastissimo e complesso nelle sue varie e sempre interessanti prospettive di lettura: Roma è stata raccontata e illustrata, descritta e fotografata in tanti modi diversi, da quello storico a quello artistico, dal celebrativo al sociale, dal neorealista all’intimista, dal folkloristico al sentimentale, per citarne solo alcuni. Finalmente, dopo un’attenta valutazione, tenuto conto soprattutto delle caratteristiche editoriali di questo volume, ho adottato la chiave interpretativa forse più tradizionale e persino ovvia, ma sicuramente la più logica possibile, vale a dire quella di illustrare Roma attraverso le testimonianze monumentali e artistiche della sua storia millenaria; ho seguito quindi l’ordine cronologico classico che, partendo dalle vestigia della Roma repubblicana e imperiale e risalendo via via per successive epoche storiche, porta alla fine ai grattacieli dell’EUR della Roma dei nostri giorni; in sintesi ho suddiviso il lavoro in quattro capitoli di varia estensione: Roma antica, Roma medievale, Roma rinascimentale e barocca, Roma moderna e contemporanea. Selezionare i soggetti da fotografare non è stata impresa facile dato il numero e l’importanza unica del «materiale» a disposizione; alla fine sono giunto ad un compromesso, che ritengo riuscito, tra quanto dell’immenso patrimonio di Roma fa oramai definitivamente parte della tradizione popolare come meta classica del turismo internazionale, e quanto a buon diritto può essere considerato come valido esempio del periodo storico trattato. Quanto al discorso fotografico vero e proprio, ho preferito una chiave di lettura chiara e lineare, orientata più all’oggettiva rappresentazione di opere d’arte che non a personali interpretazioni d’ambiente che, comunque, non sono assenti dalle pagine di questo libro, non fosse altro che per servire da trait d’union tra un argomento e l’altro; sarebbe quindi inutile cercare in queste fotografie aspetti e situazioni che appartengono ad un altro tipo di analisi, come del resto ho già spiegato all’inizio nel chiarire la mia scelta interpretativa. La singolare urbanistica di Roma, dove testimonianze di secoli tanto lontani convivono una a ridosso dell’altra, dà luogo, quasi inevitabilmente, a croniche situazioni di opere di scavo, restauro e consolidamento di monumenti e di intere aree archeologiche. I problemi per un fotografo si fanno a volte insormontabili, oppure risolvibili solo con acrobatiche inquadrature calcolate al millimetro per evitare antiestetiche presenze. Purtroppo, per alcuni soggetti di enorme importanza artistica e storica, l’accesso era inesorabilmente impedito da impalcature impenetrabili come nel caso dell’Arco di Costantino e, nell’area del Foro Romano, dell’Arco di Settimio Severo e di altri templi di rara grandiosità e bellezza. Nonostante queste ed altre inevitabili lacune, ritengo che in conclusione il volume riesca nel suo intento di dare al lettore una immagine sufficientemente precisa e valida della Città Eterna vista nell’ottica della sua unica e straordinaria storia dell’arte.

41-42-43. Bocca della verità: un luogo, una bizzarria, una convinzione, un meraviglioso epicentro di Roma Antica. Tutti, ma proprio tutti, anche in Australia (dove c’è una replica!), conoscono questa facciona di divinità romana... dapprima venerata, poi nella tarda decadenza romana usata come chiusino di fogna. La foto n. 43 mostra sullo sfondo il magnifico campanile di S. Maria in Cosmedin, romanico, a sette piani (vedi anche n. 147) e in primo piano una fanciulla ridente tra le colonne. Vogliamo credere che la fanciulla rida della credulità delle sue guide, sapendo benissimo che questo non è il Tempio di Vesta, come dicono tutti e soprattutto i popolani, e che invece è ben identificato altrove. In realtà si tratta del Tempio di Ercole Vincitore, perfetta rotonda di colonne scanalate, di remota antichità, ma quasi certamente rifatta da Tiberio.
44-45. Il concetto di immensità e quello di enormità. Enorme è la stazione di Milano o il teatro di Sidney, immenso è tutto ciò che ci richiama un vecchio inno di Puccini, stupidamente messo al bando perché creduto politicamente impegnato: «Tu (il Sole n. d. A.) non vedrai nessuna cosa al mondo maggior di Roma, maggior di Roma!». Ci sta bene anche la ripetizione! A Roma vi sono cose immense benché non grandissime, come il Tempietto del Bramante (vedi n. 138). Figuriamoci quando ci si trova di colpo davanti alle Terme di Caracalla, raro caso di gigantismo apprezzabile ed emozionante anche se privo di eccelsi pregi artistici. Questo immane recinto di 330 m. di lato, con l’ancora più colossale blocco interno, 220 m. per 114, ben più ardito come struttura, vi lascia senza fiato da qualunque punto l’osserviate. I Romani adoravano le terme e i bagni, vi si trastullavano per giornate intere. Nelle due foto, oltre ai profondi e originali scorci di arcate, noterete la pura bellezza geometrica dei pavimenti a mosaico, anche in un periodo di decadenza dell’arte romana (212-217 d. C.).
46-47. E il gigantismo continua... L’assai vasto chiostro detto «di Michelangelo» (che dette forse qualche consiglio in proposito agli architetti), benché alleggerito dai colonnati (a sinistra) e dal bel giardino centrale, rientra nel gigantismo romano, mai (o quasi mai) megalomane o fastidioso. Il chiostro si raccorda con altre smisurate terme, quelle di Diocleziano, che oggi comprendono ampie vie, sconfinate piazze, torri romane trasformate in chiese, l’aula del tepidarium trasformata in Santa Maria degli Angeli e lo sterminato Museo delle Terme o Nazionale (vedi n. 46). Ma un gigantismo forse vagamente eccessivo risalta nei piedi enormi della frantumata Statua di Costantino, in un cortile dei Palazzi del Campidoglio (Palazzo dei Conservatori). Ve n’è uno grandissimo (d’altra statua, essendo accertato che Costantino aveva solo due gambe) e più impressionante nascosto in un vicolo della città vecchia. E lì, non so perché, mi fa paura.
48-49-50. Il «Classico» Romano. L’arte classica romana è in gran parte rifacimento di famosissimi originali greci; ma gli artisti - non artigiani o maestranze - sapevano riprodurre quelle statue con tale perfezione, senza rinunciare a un tocco di personalità propria, da creare vere opere d’arte che si è praticamente convenuto di giudicare valide all’incirca quanto gli originali. Il Galata morente (n. 48), di gran lunga la più bella statua antica di Roma, specie per l’estrema malinconia dello sconfitto orgoglioso, più che morente è copia di un’opera della Scuola di Pergamo; la Venere Capitolina, considerata da molti un ideale perfetto di bellezza classica, è tratta da un originale ellenistico (II secolo a. C.), in risplendente marmo di Paro. Nell’immagine n. 48 notiamo le curiose e caratteristiche «maschere da scena» (che risparmiavano agli attori di quei tempi espressività e bellezza).

59-60-61-62. Celebrate nel nome di San Callisto, da tutti visitate. Non capirò mai perché tutti vogliano, esigano, pretendano le Catacombe di S. Callisto. Degnissimo monumento, non sono però le più emozionanti e imponenti (vedi invece S. Sebastiano e S. Priscilla), né le più vaste (S. Domitilla), né le più belle per ornamenti (S. Sebastiano, senz’altro!). Persino piccoli labirinti, come S. Pancrazio e S. Agnese, mi sono più utili per una precisa lezione esplicativa. S. Callisto I, romano, papa dal 217-222, resta, comunque sia, un nome-simbolo e fiumane di turisti o di credenti affolleranno sempre i cunicoli e le Sante Cappelle o Cripte Papali dove, sia comunque ben chiaro, vi è pur sempre molto da vedere. E poi Papa Giovanni XXIII le ha visitate, elogiate, esaltate, e questo fia suggel. .. In una suggestiva luminosità rutilante il Santo Labirinto ci si presenta nell’immagine n. 59. Poi c’interniamo per un reticolato quasi senza uguali; basterà dire che ne conosciamo più di 20 Km. e che sappiamo come ne esistono quasi altrettanti. Nell’immagine n. 60 l’altezza e la ristrettezza della galleria sono impressionanti: i loculi, dove i primi cristiani risiedevano per l’esternità, hanno varie forme e profondità. Nell’immagine n. 61 ecco il Sacerrimus Locus, il culmine sacro, insieme con il nucleo di S. Sebastiano, delle catacombe: la famosa Cripta dei Papi, che ospita i sepolcri di almeno sei Pontefici; nell’immagine seguente (n. 62) la vediamo in modo più completo, con la famosa epigrafe, una vera opera d’arte per gli splendidi caratteri creati appositamente da Furio, Dionisio il Filocalo, artista della bella grafia. Notevole la bellissima colonna dalla scanalatura a spirale.

68-69. Madre di tutte le Basiliche. Così io vedo S. Maria Maggiore. Forse perché, dopo la rovina di S. Lorenzo, resta oggi la Basilica antica più intatta, forse perché è la chiesa che, nel mondo intero, conserva il maggior numero di Reliquie, fra le quali, niente meno, l’Arca del Presepio, forse perché può competere per il primato assoluto anche nel campo delle opere d’arte, al massimo potendola sfidare due o tre rivali. Non vi è alcuno stile del mondo occidentale che non vi sia rappresentato, e vi lavorarono almeno 50 artisti di gran nome, i migliori Cosmati, dai migliori mosaicisti medievali ad Arnolfo di Cambio, Iacopo Torriti, Giuliano da Sangallo, che la dotò di un incomparabile soffitto dorato con il primo metallo aureo giunto fin qui dalle Americhe (forse dall’Eldorado?), Michelangelo, Giacomo della Porta, Jacopo del Duca, Guido Reni, Flaminio Ponzio, il Lanfranco, Pietro e forse Gian Lorenzo Bernini, Carlo Rainaldi, Ferdinando Fuga, di cui ammiriamo lo sfolgorante baldacchino nella foto n. 68, Alessandro Algardi... e tanti altri. Sempre nella 68, notiamo la singolare struttura a tre navate, divise da perfette, tornite colonne di marmo pario: l’accenno a un arcone, a sinistra, indica quella sorta di enorme transetto formato dalle Cappelle Sistina (quanti equivoci!) e Paolina; nell’abside, notiamo qui l’insieme, con la grande conca compiuta da Jacopo Torriti nel 1295, le finestre gotiche, rarissime a Roma, e i bassorilievi di Mino del Reame in basso; nella foto si riesce a scorgere abbastanza bene anche il superiore e ben più antico Arco Trionfale (V secolo); nell’inquadratura più ristretta (n. 69) altri particolari del Rusuti, fra cui l’incantevole, compitissimo Transito della Madonna, con quelle composizioni di ali e di mantelli che sembrano donate per dare serenità alle anime.

92-93. Due sfolgoranti interpretazioni della SS. Trinità. Non è dato all’uomo di inquadrare scenari altrettanto spettacolosi e di un misticismo così trionfale, esaltante. Stupendamente inquadrata dal ciclopico Baldacchino papale, trionfo del Barocco, appare in profondità la magnifica volta a cassettoni di Michelangelo e Maderno, una fra le tre più alte, e di gran lunga, del mondo: nel fondo, nella controfacciata (facciata interna) la massa luminosa della grande trifora ricorda la Concezione della SS. Trinità. Il Baldacchino è sempre stato ritenuto opera integrale del Bernini: recenti scoperte assicurano l’intervento del Borromini che, del resto, era allora il braccio destro del futuro rivale, almeno nell’arditissimo coronamento. Si noti già da qui un fascio di luce che spiove dalla cupola: nella foto n. 93 l’effetto luministico è ancora più evidente e la luminosità che spiove a tre fasci divergenti dalle finestre della cupola sembra un’allusione anche più diretta alla SS. Trinità. L’immane mole è alta m. 137 ca., il che signifca che potrebbe ospitare l’intero tiburio del Duomo di Milano, con l’aurea Madonnina. La sua decorazione a mosaico è opera del Cavalier d’Arpino, con una folla di validi aiuti.

110. Massimo fra tutti gli effetti di luce. Vi è chi sostiene che La liberazione di S. Pietro dal carcere, almeno tra gli affreschi, sia l’opera più alta, concisa, perfetta di Raffaello. La composizione, con lo «stacco» di quella grata in primo piano, è insuperabile. Ma l’affresco raggiunse la massima notorietà per il triplice effetto di luci diverse: il mite pallore della luna, il caldo risalto della fiaccola, il radioso bagliore che circonfonde l’Angelo; ma noi vi aggiungeremmo un altro motivo, il riflesso incantato dell’armatura del guerriero-carceriere. L’opera venne dipinta verso il 1514, nella stanza di Eliodoro.

125. Il divino squilibrio. Il carisma di Michelangelo (a destra) e il fascino del Medioevo (a sinistra), uniti alla profonda disimmetria delle due scalinate, una ertissima, l’altra quasi una comoda cordonata - adatta cioè anche a cavalli allenati - fanno della duplice scalea, che sale dalla piana di Campo Marzio al Campidoglio, un «monumento» unico al mondo. O, forse, una «visione». La scalea di Michelangelo è sublime per l’effetto prospettico del suo graduale sbocco nella Piazza del Campidoglio, fantastico trapezio in cui è inserita un’ellisse (per l’altra scala, vedi anche n. 123).

Un solitario putto (fuori quadro) fa compagnia alla Madonna nella remota volta del silenzioso Coro d’Inverno.

147-148-149. Quando tace il Valzer delle fontane... L’immagine n. 148 è letteralmente irriconoscibile rispetto ai momenti in cui la Fontana Paola (o Fontana del Gianicolo) getta autentiche, fragorose cascate dalle bocche dei suoi dragoni e da altre aperture, già rimbalzanti, con grande e un po’ misterioso effetto, dal giardino interno. Eppure questa visione autunnale e taciturna non manca certo di poesia (in controcampo ammirerete un fulgido panorama di Roma, incombente su Trastevere). L’immagine precedente, n. 147, mostra il grande tema di base che rende Roma non solo bella, ma più bella di ogni altra città del mondo (opinione personale, ma anche diffusissima): il contrasto! Dove può proiettarsi in breve spazio una brillante fontana barocco-rococò contro un austero, formidabile campanile romanico, se non a Roma? La fontana è opera di C. F. Bizzaccheri, buon architetto e decoratore; nel gioco formato dalla vasca, dalla scogliera, dalla conchiglia e dai Tritoni (1715) l’aiutò F. Moratti. Il campanile della bella, ma troppo falsificata S. Maria in Cosmedin è forse il più bello del genere «romanico romano», a dadi o quadrangoli sovrapposti, a bifore o a trifore, con semplici cornici e felici ornamenti; risale al XII secolo ed è certamente più alto dei 44 m. che di solito gli vengono concessi; da un calcolo elementare mi risulterebbero almeno 56 m. Il contrasto c’è, ma appare più timido anche nella famosa Fontana del Mosè, n. 149, dove il gigante, di cui si percepiscono solo i piedi e la posizione, è del 1587-1588, fra la Controriforma e l’Arte della Fontana, i leoncelli copie di gusto Impero di opere provenienti da una civiltà remota, la balaustra marmorea pura Arte della Fontana (1560 ca.) e la facciata di S. Maria della Vittoria, nello sfondo, proto-barocca (1626). La fontana era famosa per la presunta bruttezza del Mosè: il suo autore, Prospero da Brescia, si sarebbe ucciso per l’onta di dileggi ricevuti. Ecco come si fa la storia: 1° la statua è invece di Leonardo Sormoni; 2° costui sopravvisse ricco, felice e stimato. È grazioso, comunque sia, il sonetto o pasquinata che, criticando l’opera, fa parlare Mosè: «Guarda con occhio torvo / pensando inorridito / al danno che a lui fe’ / uno scultor stordito».

155. Il capolavoro della gentilezza. Non so se mi sono espresso bene, ma è possibile immaginare un’opera che dia il senso dell’atto gentile maggiormente di questa? In ogni caso, La fontana delle Tartarughe è fra le più belle del genere «non colossale» e avrebbe meritato a sua volta un brano respighiano (vedi n. 150-151). Quasi celata in una deliziosa piazzetta presso la zona del vecchio Ghetto, può dirsi per la suprema eleganza il culmine dell’Arte della fontana, simile al Manierismo per i volti volutamente inespressivi che oggi, così privi di pupille, definiremmo metafisici. Sopra le quattro belle conchiglie quattro efebi, con gesto delicato, aiutano altrettante tartarughe (che mi ostino a giudicare contemporanee e non aggiunte nel ’600 come spesso si legge) a bere nella vasca superiore. Questa è una fra le piazze di Roma completamente circondate da edifici antichi.

175-176. Pini perenni, caduchi autunni, acque circonfuse da leggende. Benché superi di poco il Km. quadrato e non sia quindi fra i massimi giardini urbani, Villa Borghese aspira anch’essa al primato: di bellezza, forse, o di romanticismo o di colore, oppure di fascino antico. È facile dividerla in molte sezioni, ma qui vi mostreremo soltanto uno tra i più belli, aerei settori a pineta (generalmente di Pinus italicus o di Pinus maritimus, ben poco differenziati l’uno dall’altro), nel quale si individua facilmente uno dei simpatici edifici di stile neoclassico, per lo più del Valadier e allievi (1790-1815), sormontato dalla torricella a colonnine, con l’ampio orologio. Più romantico, forse, lo squarcio del giardino del lago, con il Tempietto d’Esculapio, ammantato dai colori del lungo incantevole autunno romano. Nel laghetto, remando placidamente sulle comode barchette, si scorgono le grandi bocche delle enormi carpe.

Infacing this fascinating photographic work on Rome and Lazio I wasn’t hiding the considerable difficulties which I was getting into. The «subject» is huge and complex in its various and always interesting perspectives of reading: Rome has been told and illustrated, described and photographed in a variety of ways, from the historical to the artistic, from the celebratory to the social, from the neorealist to the intimist, from the folkloric to the sentimental, to name just a few. Finally, after a careful consideration, taking into account especially the editorial features of this volume, I have adopted the most traditional and perhaps even obvious interpretative key, but certainly the most logical as possible, namely that of illustrating Rome through monumental and artistic testimonies of its long history; I followed thereby the classic chronological order that, starting from the vestiges of the Roman Republic and Empire and going up gradually through successive historical periods, eventually leads to the EUR skyscrapers of modern day Rome; in summary I have divided the work into four chapters of various extension: Ancient Rome, Medieval Rome, Renaissance and baroque Rome, modern and contemporary Rome. Selecting the subjects to photograph was not an easy task given the number and the unique importance of the “material”; eventually I came to a compromise, which I reckon succeeded, between how much of the immense heritage of Rome is now permanently part of the folk tradition as a classic destination for international tourism, and how rightfully it can be considered as a good example of the discoursed historical period. As for the photo itself, I preferred a clear and linear key of interpretation, geared more to the objective representation of artworks, rather than personal interpretations of the environment which, however, are not absent from the pages of this book, if only to serve as a liaison between an topic and another; so it would be useless to try to find in these photographs aspects and situations that belong to another type of analysis, as I have already explained earlier to clarify my choice of interpretation. The unique urbanology of Rome, where evidences of centuries so far cohabit one behind the other, leads almost inevitably to chronic situations of excavation, restoration and consolidation works of monuments and entire archaeological areas. The problems for a photographer are sometimes insurmountable, or can be resolved only with acrobatic shots calculated to the millimetre to prevent unsightly presences. Unfortunately, for some subjects of great artistic and historical importance, access was inexorably prevented by impenetrable scaffolding like the Arch of Constantine and the area of the Roman Forum, the Arch of Septimius Severus and other temples of rare grandeur and beauty. Despite these and other unavoidable gaps, I believe that in the end the volume succeeds in his intention to give the reader a sufficiently precise and valid image of the Eternal City viewed from the perspective of its unique and amazing art history.

41-42-43. Bocca della verità: a place, a strangeness, a belief, a wonderful epicenter of Ancient Rome. Everyone, just everyone, even in Australia (where there is a replica!), know this roman god’s face ... first worshipped, then in late roman decadence used as a sewer manhole. The photo n. 43 shows in the background the magnificent bell tower of S. Maria in Cosmedin, romanesque, with seven floors (see also n. 147) and featured a girl laughing between columns. We want to believe that the girl laughs of the credulity of his guides, knowing well that this is not the Temple of Vesta, as everyone says, and especially the common people, and which is clearly identified elsewhere. Actually this is the Temple of Hercules Victor, perfect round of fluted columns, of remote antiquity, but almost certainly rebuilt by Tiberius.
44-45. The concept of immensity and enormity. Huge is the station of Milan or the theater of Sidney, immense is everything that reminds us of an old hymn of Puccini, stupidly banned because believed politically engaged: "You (the Sun n. d. A.) you won't see any thing in the world greater than Rome, greater than Rome!». Also the repetition here is good! In Rome there are huge things although not very huge, like the Tempietto del Bramante (see n. 138). Imagine when you are suddenly in front of the Therms of Caracalla, a rare case of gigantism appreciable and exciting even if devoid of sublime artistic qualities. This huge fence with a 330 m side, with the even more colossal internal block, 220 m per 114, far more daring as structure, it leaves you breathless from anywhere you view it. The romans worshiped therms and baths, they stayed there for entire days. In the two photos, in addition to the original and deep glimpses of arches, you will notice the pure geometric beauty of the mosaic floors, even in a period of decadence of the roman art (212-217 A D
46-47. And the gigantism continues ... The very large cloister named «of Michelangelo» (who perhaps gave some advice in regard to architects), although unburdened from the colonnades (left) and the beautiful central garden, is within the roman gigantism, never (or almost never) megalomaniac or annoying. The cloister is connected with other huge therms, those of Diocletian, which now include large streets, sweeping squares, roman towers converted into churches, the aula del tepidarium turned into Santa Maria degli Angeli and the immense Museum of the Therms or National (see n. 46). But a perhaps vaguely excessive gigantism stands out in the huge feet of the shattered Statue of Constantine, in a courtyard of the State Capitol Buildings (Palazzo dei Conservatori). There is a huge (another statue, being established that Constantine had only two legs) and more impressive one tucked away in an alley in the old town. And there, I don't know why, it scares me.
48-49-50. The «Classic» Roman. Classical roman art is mostly makeover of famous greek originals; but the artists - not artisans or workers - knew to reproduce those statues with such perfection, without sacrificing a touch of personality of their own, to create true works of art that it is virtually agreed to judge valid as much as the originals. The dying Gaul (n. 48), by far the finest antique statue of Rome, especially for the extreme melancholy of the proud defeated, rather than dying it is copy of a work from the School of Pergamum; the Capitoline Venus, considered by many to be an ideal blend of classic beauty, is taken from an hellenistic original (2nd century BC), in resplendent marble of Paros. In the image n. 48 we note the curious and characteristic «scene masks» (which spared all the actors of that time of expressiveness and beauty).

59-60-61-62. Celebrated in the name of Saint Callixtus, visited by all. I will never understand why everybody wants, requires, demands the Catacombs of San Callisto. Most worthy monument, aren't the most exciting and impressive (see instead San Sebastiano and St. Priscilla), nor the broadest (St. Domitilla), nor the most beautiful for the ornaments (St Sebastian, of course!). Even small mazes, like S. Pancrazio and St Agnes, would be more helpful for a detailed explanatory lecture. St. Callistus I, roman, Pope from 217-222, remains, however, a name-symbol and floods of tourists or believers flock always the tunnels and the Holy Chapels or Papal Crypts where, is clear, that there is a lot to see. And then Pope John XXIII visited, praised, exalted them, and that fixes it definitely... In a charming radiance glowing the Holy Maze turns up in picture n. 59. Then there we intern for a grid almost without equal; suffice to say that we know more than 20 Km, and we know how there are almost as many. In the image n. 60 the height and narrowness of the gallery are impressive: the niches, where early christians resided for eternity, have different shapes and depths. In the image n. 61 here is the Sacerrimus Locus, the sacred summit, together with the nucleus of San Sebastiano, of the catacombs: the famous Crypt of the Popes, which houses the graves of at least six Popes; in the following picture (n. 62) we see it more fully, with its famous epigraph, a true work of art for the wonderful characters created by Furio, Dionysius the Filocalus, artist of the beautiful handwriting. Very beautiful column with a spiral groove.

68-69. Mother of all churches. So I see Santa Maria Maggiore. Perhaps because, after the decay of San Lorenzo, it remains today the most intact ancient Basilica, perhaps because it is the church that, throughout the world, maintains the largest number of Relics, including, no less, theArk of the Presepio, perhaps because it can compete for the absolute primacy in the field of artwork, with at most two or three rivals being able to challenge it. There is no western style that is not there represented, and to it worked there at least 50 famous artists, the best Cosmati, from the best medieval mosaic artists to Arnolfo di Cambio, Jacopo Torriti, Giuliano da Sangallo, who endowed it with an incomparable golden ceiling with the first aureus metal come here from the Americas (perhaps from Eldorado?), Michelangelo, Giacomo della Porta Jacopo del Duca, Guido Reni, Flaminio Ponzio, Lanfranco, Peter and maybe Gian Lorenzo Bernini, Carlo Rainaldi, Ferdinando Fuga, of which we admire the dazzling canopy in the picture n. 68, Alessandro Algardi and many other. Always in 68, we note the singular structure with three naves, divided by perfect, turned columns of parian marble: the mention of an arch, left, indicates the kind of massive transept formed by the Sistine (how many misunderstandings!) and Pauline Chapels; in the apse, we note here the collection, with the large basin made by Jacopo Torriti in 1295, the gothic windows, rare in Rome, and the bas-reliefs of Mino del Reame below; in the picture you can see quite well the even on top and much more ancient Triumphal Arch (fifth century); in the more restricted frame (n. 69) other details of Rusuti, including the lovely, very elegant Transit of the Madonna, with those compositions of wings and cloaks that seem donated to give serenity to the souls.

92-93. Two dazzling interpretations of the SS. Trinity. It is not given to man to frame equally spectacular sceneries and with a so triumphant mysticism, thrilling. Beautifully framed by the gigantic papal Canopy, triumph of Baroque, appears in depth the magnificent coffered vault by Michelangelo and Maderno, by far one of the three highest in the world: at the bottom, on the opposite façade (interior façade) the bright mass of the large triple lancet window commemorates the Conception of the SS. Trinity. The Canopy has always been considered a complete work by Bernini: recent discoveries, at least in the very bold capstone, provide Borromini's intervention who, moreover, was the right arm of the future rival. Note already from here a beam of light that comes from the dome: in the picture n. 93 the light effect is even more evident and the brightness that comes with three divergent beams from the windows of the dome seems an allusion even more directly to the SS. Trinity. The huge mole is about m.137 tall, which means that it could accommodate the entire base of the cupola of the Duomo of Milan, with the golden Madonna. Its mosaic decoration is the work of Cavalier d'Arpino, with a crowd of valuable aid.

110. Maximal of all the lighting effects. There are those who argue that the deliverance of St. Peter from prison, at least among the frescoes, is the highest, concise, perfect work of Raphael. The composition, with the «detachment» of the grating in the foreground, is unsurpassed. But the fresco reached its apex notoriety for the triple effect of different lights: the mild pallor of the moon, the warm highlight of the torch, the bright glow that wraps the Angel; but we would add another reason, the enchanted reflection of the armor of the warrior-jailer. The work was painted in 1514 in the room of Eliodoro.

125. The divine imbalance. The charisma of Michelangelo (on the right) and the charm of the Middle Ages (on the left), combined with the deep dysmetria of the two stairways, one very steep, the other almost a snug graded ramp that is also for trained horses - make of the double staircase, which rises from the plain of Campo Marzio to the Capitol, a «monument» unique in the world. Or, perhaps, a «vision». The scalea by Michelangelo is sublime for the perspective effect of its gradual outlet in Piazza del Campidoglio, fantastic trapeze in which appears an ellipse (for the other scale, see also n. 123).

134. Gentle soul, died of grief, but donor of serenity. The golden ceiling of Santa Maria in Trastevere (see n. 70) shows how the genius easily outruns changes in centuries and styles. Domenichino (Domenico Zampieri, from Bologna, 1581-1641), this sensitive soul dying of grief because he was denied to conclude his masterpiece, tells us three things, with this work that concludes the ancient church (barring the added, sublime Avila Chapel, by A. Gherardi): a) the invention of a bold «Proto-Baroque» in amazing oddities of the carvings; b) his skill in giving sweetness and serenity; c) the ability to create games of color-and-heat. A solitary child (out of context) accompanies the Madonna on the remote vault of the quiet Winter Chorus.

147-148-149. When the Waltz of the fountains is silent... The image n. 148 is literally unrecognizable compared to the times when the Fontana Paola (or Fontana del Gianicolo) throws authentic, thundering waterfalls from the mouths of its dragoons and other openings, bouncing, with large and somewhat mysterious effect, from the inner garden. Yet this autumn and taciturn vision has no shortage of poetry (in controcampo you will admire a shining panorama of Rome, incumbent on Trastevere). The above image, n. 147, shows the great basic theme that makes Rome not only beautiful, but more beautiful than any other city in the world (personal opinion, but also widespread): the contrast! Where can be projected in a brief space a brilliant baroque-rococo fountain against an austere, formidable romanic bell tower, if not in Rome? The fountain is a work by C. F. Bizzaccheri, good architect and decorator; in the game formed by the tub, the cliff, the shell and the Mermen (1715) was helped by F. Moratti. The bell tower of the beautiful but too faked S. Maria in Cosmedin is perhaps the most beautiful of the «roman romanic» genre, dice patterned or with overlapping quadrangles, with double lancet windows or triple lancet windows, with simple frames and happy ornaments; it dates to the 12th century and is certainly higher than 44 m. that are usually granted, from an elementary calculation it would be at least 56 m. The contrast is there, but it looks more shy even in the famous Fountain of Moses, n. 149, where the giant, of which you perceive only the feet and position, is of 1587-1588, between the Counterreformation and the Art of the Fountain, the young lions Empire style copies of works from a remote civilization, the marble balustrade pure Art of the Fountain (1560) and the façade of Santa Maria della Vittoria, in the background, proto-baroque (1626). The fountain was famous for the alleged ugliness of the Moses: its author, Prospero from Brescia, would have killed himself for the shame of the received jeers. Here's how you make history: 1° the statue is instead of Leonardo Sormoni; 2° he survived rich, happy and valued. It's nice, anyway, the sonnet or pasquinata that, criticizing the work, makes Moses talk: «Watch with glowering eye / thinking appalled / to the damage that made him / a stunned sculptor».

155. The masterpiece of kindness. I don't know if I expressed myself well, but you can imagine a work that gives a sense of gentle act more than this one? In any case, The fountain of the Turtles is among the most beautiful of the «not colossal» genre and in turn it would have deserved a song by Respighi (see n. 150-151). Almost hidden in a delightful square at the area of the former Ghetto, is truly for the supreme elegance defined as the culmination of theArt of the fountain, similar to Mannerism for the purposely inexpressive faces that today, so lacking in pupils, we would define metaphysical. Over the four beautiful shells four youths, with delicate gesture, help as many turtles (which I continue judging contemporary and not added in '600 as often you read) to drink in the top tank. This is one of the squares of Rome completely surrounded by old buildings.

175-176. Perennial pines, deciduous falls, waters circumfused by legends. Although it slightly exceeds the square Km and is not therefore among the highest urban gardens, Villa Borghese also aspires to primacy: of beauty, perhaps, or of romance or color, or ancient charm. It is easy to divide it into many sections, but here we'll show you only one of the most beautiful, aerial sectors in pinewood (generally of Pinus italicus or Pinus maritimus, little differentiated from each other), in which you easily locate one of the sympathetic neo-classical buildings, mostly by Valadier and pupils (1790-1815), surmounted by the tower with small columns, with the large clock. More romantic, perhaps, the glimpse of the lake garden, with the Temple of Aesculapius, wrapped in the colours of the long lovely roman autumn. In the lake, rowing placidly on the comfortable boats, one can see the large mouths of the huge carps.

La straordinaria epoca del Rinascimento italiano consente molteplici chiavi di lettura. Tante le strade e gli accessi, innumerevoli i percorsi in cui perdersi e ritrovarsi guidati dalle centinaia di opere che hanno reso i decenni del ’400 e del ’500 così significativi nella Storia dell’Arte e dell’uomo.
Questo volume propone uno di questi percorsi, ed è caratterizzato da due elementi che ne definiscono la particolarità: si è guidati alla scoperta dell’opera di Leonardo da Vinci, di Raffaello Sanzio e di Michelangelo Buonarroti attraverso l’esposizione di opere e capolavori custoditi sul territorio italiano.
Un emozionante viaggio in Italia, dunque, alla scoperta dei capolavori dei tre giganti della Storia dell’Arte e di tanti altri protagonisti che, insieme a loro, hanno reso quegli anni insuperabili. L’arte rinascimentale italiana conservata in Italia, nelle sue chiese e nei suoi musei, anche in quei luoghi talvolta meno celebrati e conosciuti ma di eguale dignità ed importanza per il compito e la serietà con cui svolgono il loro lavoro. la bottega del Verrocchio
Se mai è esistito un genio universale questo è Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519). Il suo è il profilo di un uomo dallo straordinario ingegno e dalle poliedriche capacità che a fondo hanno innovato e scandagliato l’arte e la scienza. Pittore, scultore e architetto, ma anche matematico e fisico, ingegnere e inventore, poeta e scrittore, persino filosofo: Leonardo è tutto ciò, e altro ancora, forse troppo altro ancora, perché la storia ne ha quasi rimproverato la curiosità insaziabile, la foga di conoscere e fare che lo portava a lasciare incompiuti molti lavori e progetti per seguire una nuova impresa, un interesse recente, un improvviso corso di pensieri, oppure per saggiare una tecnica inedita, che in certe occasioni lo conduceva fuori strada. Talvolta, sempre la storia, è stata gelosa del proprio beniamino, quella dell’arte perché il Leonardo scienziato ha tolto tempo ed energie all’ineguagliabile autore della Gioconda e del Cenacolo, costringendoci a godere di così pochi capolavori, e quella della scienza perché il Leonardo artista ha a lungo messo in ombra il livello e l’entità delle scoperte e delle intuizioni compiute nel dominio delle discipline naturalistiche, di cui la mole di disegni e schizzi di tutti i generi – ingegneristici, meccanici, botanici, anatomici – è chiaro indizio. E proprio il disegno indica come in Leonardo arte e scienza non fossero due ambiti separati, perché esso era per lui un mezzo di indagine scientifica della realtà e nel contempo, rappresentando quella realtà, uno strumento per fare arte.
Come spesso succede, un tale prodigio di uomo non tardò a manifestare il proprio talento, e se ne accorse Andrea del Verrocchio (1435-1488), presso il quale ser Piero, notaio, aveva messo a bottega l’adolescente figlio illegittimo Leonardo. Più scultore che pittore, Andrea di Francesco di Cione (questo era il suo vero nome, poi secondo le fonti tramutato in Verrocchio perché collaboratore dell’orefice Giuliano Verrocchi) era titolare a Firenze di un laboratorio polivalente, dove, accanto alle classiche arti figurative, ci si occupava di lavori di ingegneria e architettura, e non mancava un’officina di fusione, dove venne fabbricata la sfera di rame posta in cima alla cupola del Brunelleschi in S. Maria del Fiore. Leonardo, tra l’altro, nei suoi disegni si dimostrò molto attento alle soluzioni brunelleschiane, come risulta dal progetto di sopraelevazione del Battistero, se uno schizzo di Francesco Granacci ne è fedele rappresentazione, inverando il racconto del Vasari, secondo cui egli “mostrava volere alzare il tempio di San Giovanni di Fiorenza, e sottomettervi le scalee senza ruinarlo; e con sì forti ragioni lo persuadeva, che pareva possibile, quantunque ciascuno, poi che è si era partito, conoscesse per se medesimo l’impossibilità di cotanta impresa”. La bottega ospitò artisti del calibro di Perugino e Botticelli, ma alla sua cerchia afferiscono pure Domenico Ghirlandaio, maestro del Buonarroti, Francesco Botticini (1446-1498), a cui viene attribuito il Tobia e i tre Arcangeli degli Uffizi talvolta ascritto direttamente al Verrocchio, Cosimo Rosselli (1439-1507), forse artefice con Leonardo della Natività di Palazzo Vecchio a Firenze, Piero di Cosimo (1461 ca.-1521), le cui prime prove strizzano l’occhio al nascente stile vinciano, e Lorenzo di Credi (1459-1537), quest’ultimo tra l’altro erede del Verrocchio e autore di opere, come la Madonna di Piazza del Duomo di Pistoia, in cui è stata ravvisata l’inventio leonardesca, magari mediata da disegni. Stando sempre al Vasari, il Verrocchio fu così colpito dalla precoce abilità pittorica esibita da Leonardo nella lavorazione a più mani del Battesimo di Cristo, oggi agli Uffizi, da abbandonare pennello e colori, quello che potremmo dire un senso di inferiorità che comunque non gli impedì, come vuole una certa storiografia, di omaggiare il suo giovane allievo trasfondendo nella statua del David (Firenze, Museo Nazionale del Bargello) le sue efebiche sembianze, e in particolare quello sguardo ineffabile che non a caso riappare nella Monna Lisa, se è vero che in questa il sommo artista proiettò se stesso.

dall’esordio ad Urbino
ai primi capolavori
L’ambiente artistico urbinate, nell’ultimo trentennio del Quattrocento, fu molto rilevante e stimolante, e Raffaello nacque in un mondo letteralmente votato all’arte. È plausibile che il giovanissimo Raffaello si sia formato nella bottega paterna e abbia assimilato per tempo l’elevato livello intellettuale che non poteva non esservi vigente. Giovanni Santi, il padre, non era solo un pittore di doti notevoli e di cospicua creatività, ma era anche uno scrittore apprezzato nell’ambiente della corte e orientato su valori umanistici di indubbia pregnanza. Era un dotto, storico e autore teatrale di qualche rilievo, che conosceva bene la biblioteca del duca Federico ricchissima di codici miniati, quasi a compendio di quella sapienza umanistica che nella corte di Urbino trovava degnissima dimora, consentendo a Raffaello fanciullo di conoscere tanti aspetti della pittura quattrocentesca anche di ambiente fiorentino.
Giovanni Santi, aveva dimostrato di aver compiuto un passo rilevante nella rivendicazione del ruolo del pittore come inventore del senso profondo dell’opera. Il principio umanistico vigente dalla generazione di Giotto e i suoi seguaci, alla corte di Urbino è favorito dallo sviluppo vertiginoso della dottrina letteraria e teatrale, che implicava un vero e proprio scatto in avanti da parte del pittore, attribuendo all’arte la funzione di guida di tutte le attività che avessero a che fare con la sua visione. Nella cappella Tiranni della chiesa di S. Domenico a Cagli, Giovanni Santi lascia uno dei suoi più alti capolavori, la Resurrezione di Cristo sovrastante una pala d’altare con la Madonna col Bambino e Santi. Tutto lo spazio della parete di fondo e l’arcone sovrastante sono invasi da un unico affresco, in cui la misura delle reciproche proporzioni e i rapporti tra i personaggi sono regolati da un principio di omogeneità totale. Lo spazio in cui è raffigurata la Resurrezione e quello della pala d’altare sottostante è lo stesso. La costruzione dello spazio inferiore è realizzata sulla base del principio della prospettiva centrale, composta con un’architettura illusiva; lo spazio della Resurrezione è un paesaggio in cui la tomba del Cristo è una piramide, dentro la quale l’incasso del sepolcro corrisponde allo schienale del trono della Vergine sottostante. Santi, all’interno dell’iconografia tradizionale e consolidata, inventa la continuità dello spazio e delle figure, per cui i soldati che dormono mentre Cristo risorto benedice, poggiano un piede sulla cornice superiore della sacra rappresentazione sottostante, sopra la quale c’è la roccia del paese, dove Cristo risorge, che entra direttamente nella struttura architettonica dell’assemblea dei santi. L’opera è molto bella, anche se duramente segnata secondo l’influenza fiamminga che in Urbino era inevitabile per un maestro come Santi, ma dimostra la coscienza dell’invenzione da parte dell’umanista avverso alle convenzioni della forma e ansioso di dare una lezione solenne a chi non capisce cosa sia la pittura.

A partire dai Ritratti Doni, Raffaello individua quella dimensione della rielaborazione totale del sapere acquisito, che rende la sua pittura una vera e propria trasfigurazione della storia precedente attraverso il filtro di una spiritualità e di una consapevolezza che lo guideranno prima a quella sorta di prova generale del tempo nuovo che è il Trasporto di Cristo al Sepolcro e poi alla Stanza della Segnatura, in cui gli uomini del tempo intravidero il segno di una rigenerazione totale e del profondo concetto del Rinascimento, poi sviluppato nei secoli successivi in sede teoretica.
I due ritratti furono quasi sicuramente eseguiti insieme, ma si ritiene per lo più che sia stato dipinto prima quello della moglie, in cui Raffaello introdusse una notevole variante nello sfondo (individuata da ricerche tecnico-scientifiche compiute sul quadro), prima pensato come un interno con una finestra e poi come paesaggio, mentre nessuna variante è stata riscontrata nel ritratto del marito. Del resto, la presenza sul retro di entrambi i dipinti di due scene, dovute al cosiddetto Maestro di Serumido (variamente identificato in qualcuno dei coetanei fiorentini di Raffaello), raffiguranti rispettivamente la Nuova generazione discendente da Pirra (dietro il Ritratto di Maddalena) e il Diluvio (dietro il Ritratto di Agnolo), conferma l’esecuzione sostanzialmente contestuale delle due opere e mette il ricercatore nella migliore condizione di compierne un esame approfondito, determinante per la futura carriera di Raffaello.
Raffaello arrivò a queste due opere somme di colpo, senza un processo di avvicinamento? È impossibile dirlo per mancanza di dati documentari e il problema è acuito dalla difficoltà di una datazione del tutto circostanziata. Si tratta inequivocabilmente di ritratti nuziali e si sa che Agnolo e Maddalena Doni si sposarono il 31 gennaio del 1504. È possibile pensare che Raffaello si sia recato a Firenze proprio per ritrarli e che le opere siano state compiute tra la fine del 1504 e l’inizio del 1505. Tuttavia è soltanto un’opinione non condivisa da tutti gli studiosi, ed è quindi necessario esaminare bene la questione da ulteriori punti di vista. Il Raffaello moderno e autonomo nasce qui. Non c’è dubbio che da questo momento in poi Raffaello abbia compiuto la scelta personale che lo porterà alla complessità del Trasporto di Cristo al Sepolcro per Atalanta Baglioni e direttamente alla cosiddetta Disputa sul Santissimo Sacramento nella prima Stanza Vaticana. Ma per capire come e perché arrivi a quel livello sublime occorre indagare di più sui Ritratti Doni.

Il “Trasporto di Cristo al Sepolcro” e altre storie
Si ritiene normalmente che il Trasporto di Cristo al Sepolcro, capolavoro assoluto di Raffaello, sia stato ordinato dalla nobildonna perugina Atalanta Baglioni per la cappella funeraria della famiglia nella chiesa di S. Francesco al Prato. Raffaello fu aiutato nell’esecuzione della pala da Domenico Alfani da Perugia, che eseguì la cimasa con l’immagine del Dio Padre, mentre la predella con le immagini delle virtù teologali si direbbe eseguita da Raffaello stesso. È sempre stato notato come il dipinto sia diviso sostanzialmente in due parti quasi incomunicanti tra loro. Una è costituita dalla scena vera e propria del Trasporto al Sepolcro esemplato sul modello classico del sarcofago di Meleagro. L’altra dalla scena dello svenimento della Vergine, in cui qualcuno ha voluto vedere l’influsso del Tondo Doni di Michelangelo nella torsione delle figure, in verità scarsamente simili a quelle del tondo michelangiolesco.
è possibile che Raffaello sia partito, in effetti, da un’impostazione iconografica di tipo peruginesco per poi arrivare attraverso una serie di passaggi a quel doppio livello che lo avrebbe portato alla formulazione finale.
È stata notata anche l’anomalia del Trasporto come Pala d’altare. Non è più il tradizionale gruppo della Madonna e santi, ma una vera e complessa narrazione più adatta a un affresco che a una vera e normale pala d’altare. Il rapporto con la cultura romana è stato riscontrato sia in alcune tipologie dolorose dei volti dei trasportatori, tali da richiamare addirittura il gruppo scultoreo del Laocoonte, appena riscoperto a Roma in uno scavo del 1506, sia nella tipologia stessa del corpo morto del Cristo, purissimo e intatto in un’intramontabile giovinezza, collegabile forse alla Pietà di S. Pietro di Michelangelo Buonarroti consegnata appena sette anni prima e già celeberrima.
Che il Trasporto sia stato immediatamente un vero e proprio trionfo di una forma d’arte nuova e sconvolgente è certo al punto che la data, iscrittavi del 1507, deve essere valutata attentamente e non è detto che corrisponda sul serio alla consegna del quadro. Nella predella, ad esempio, nella figura della Virtù teologale della carità si avverte già la conoscenza della volta della Cappella Sistina di Michelangelo e quindi è improbabile che sia stata dipinta prima del 1508-9. Per non parlare, poi, del Dio padre che sovrastava la tavola centrale, che potrebbe essere collegata anche a una precoce conoscenza diretta di modelli romani. Ma resta il fatto che, se Raffaello ha apposto la data 1507 al singolare dipinto, lo ha fatto per motivi precisi. E sono questi i motivi che vanno ricercati.
Il Trasporto, sovente citato come la Deposizione, è una specie di macchina figurativa molto complessa e elaborata con precisione esemplare. Lo studio preliminare, eseguito a penna e inchiostro su tracce a stilo e gesso nero, è quello del Dipartimento di arti grafiche del Louvre (inv. 3865) che contiene una mirabile composizione di figure, in cui il corpo del Cristo giace a terra e sopra di lui si svolge lo svenimento della Vergine, mentre la figura del san Giovanni è l’unica in piedi e chiude la composizione sulla destra riempiendo tutta l’altezza dello spazio. Poi, l’altro studio fondamentale è quello a penna, inchiostro bruno e tracce di matita nera presso il Gabinetto degli Uffizi disegni e stampe (inv. 538E). Qui, invece, l’idea è di un gruppo di trasportatori la statura dei quali riempie completamente l’altezza del foglio che hanno sollevato il corpo e lo portano sul lenzuolo bilanciandosi da un lato all’altro, mentre la Maddalena si piega sul corpo del Cristo nel gesto supremo della compassione.
Il risultato finale è quello di un quadro completamente nuovo e inedito in tutta la tradizione occidentale che contempera diverse ipotesi ma nello stesso tempo le supera tutte.
L’allineamento delle teste rimarca l’apertura paesaggistica, in cui sembrano sovrapporsi le idee figurative che scaturiscono dal mondo pintoricchiesco-peruginesco, da quello veneto e da quello leonardesco. Principio supremo, che coordina tutta la composizione, è quello del nitore assoluto e quasi spettrale che il maestro aveva messo in atto nella Pala Ansidei che lo aveva accompagnato nelle molte opere d’occasione dei due anni precedenti. La poetica dello sguardo, su cui aveva impiantato la delicatissima poetica delle grandi Madonne fiorentine, qui è completamente superata. C’è, naturalmente, ma la metodologia è completamente nuova. Nel fenomenale gruppo delle tre teste dei personaggi sulla sinistra già si intravede il lavorio compiuto dal maestro nel concepire questa sorta di periplo dell’animo umano messo in atto nel quadro. Il pianto della Maddalena è, invece, presentato con una sorta di affilamento della forma quasi che la stessa fosse il simbolo del retaggio figurativo, che Raffaello si trasporta dietro dal suo recente passato, e il tema stesso del trasporto fosse calato quale metafora nel sistema di immagini predisposto da Raffaello.
Il corpo di Cristo è raffigurato con una magistrale idea del rilassamento estenuato e beato che non può non competere al destino del Redentore dell’Umanità, ma il peso e lo sforzo restano depositati nel quadro con un’evidenza assoluta. La gamma cromatica è in tutte le immagini depurata da ogni sospetto di addensamento e di tenebra. L’ombra, quando c’è, è trasparente, nulla è gravato di oscurità. Scende come una benedizione sulle immagini un’eterna primavera dell’arte e del pensiero, mentre il gruppo delle pie donne è veramente scolpito nel tessuto pittorico, e Raffaello ritrova il linguaggio delle mirabili Madonne di poco tempo prima rifuso nell’asprezza di una dolcissima materia costruita nella gabbia ferrea del disegno.
È interessante il problema delle proporzioni e quello del rapporto tra la figura e il paesaggio. A ben osservare, in effetti, il gruppo delle pie donne vuole essere complessivamente un po’ più piccolo rispetto a quello delle figure in primo piano, ma l’occhio non misura agevolmente la differenza, mentre il paesaggio lontano è tutto tenuto sullo stesso piano di evidenza e nitidezza. La composizione scorre da sinistra a destra secondo l’ordine naturale della scrittura in occidente e Raffaello dosa con precisione millimetrica il trascorrere delle luci da una figura all’altra, ed è più compatto e unitario nelle pie donne che nel resto. Vuole, cioè, inserire nel quadro, tramite il dosaggio delle luci, un autentico elemento narrativo costringendo l’osservatore a una ricognizione che di necessità avverta il lato sinistro come inizio della composizione e il lato destro come fine che consolida i risultati acquisiti.

la Corte degli Sforza
Nel 1482 Leonardo arriva a Milano, capitale, dopo Firenze e insieme con altri centri come Roma e Venezia, della civiltà rinascimentale. Nella sfarzosa e ambiziosa corte di Ludovico Sforza, detto il Moro, giunge con in tasca una raccomandazione di Lorenzo il Magnifico e preceduto da una lettera da lui stesso dettata in cui vantava, o meglio sottolineava diremmo oggi ex post davanti alla mole delle sue creazioni, le proprie doti artistiche e soprattutto tecniche (forse anche consapevole che in quella industriosa città vi erano maggiori opportunità nei campi dell’arte applicata rispetto a Firenze, dove dominava la spiritualità e l’intellettualismo dell’accademia neoplatonica dei Medici), proponendosi non solo come pittore, scultore, architetto e financo musico, ma segnatamente come ingegnere esperto in vari settori, dalla meccanica all’idraulica, nonché come inventore di apparecchiature belliche e progettista di apparati scenici e congegni per spettacoli e feste.
Grazie anche all’amicizia stretta con Donato Bramante (insieme al quale progetta la guglia del Duomo) e con Luca Pacioli (del quale illustra il trattato De divina proportione), Leonardo affina le proprie conoscenze in architettura e in matematica, oltre che in tutti i più svariati settori dello scibile, studi che confluiscono nel Codice Atlantico, oggi conservato proprio a Milano, mentre, a parte importanti eccezioni come il Cenacolo, la Vergine delle rocce e alcuni ritratti, non sono molte le opere eseguite nei quasi vent’anni del suo soggiorno milanese (di una, la decorazione della Sala delle Asse al Castello Sforzesco, restano soltanto alcune, sia pure preziose, tracce con motivi vegetali – attualmente è in corso un restauro che lascia intravedere interessanti novità, anche in termini di inediti brani autografi).
Una delle principali opere avrebbe dovuto essere il grande monumento equestre in onore di Francesco Sforza, tra l’altro una delle ragioni della venuta dell’artista alla corte del Moro, visto che egli aveva scritto che in tal modo finalmente “si poterà dare opera al cavallo di bronzo, che sarà gloria immortale e eterno onore de la memoria del Signor vostro padre e de la inclita casa Sforzesca”. Nonostante avesse tenuto impegnato Leonardo per almeno un decennio, quest’opera, dalle dimensioni colossali essendo alta oltre sette metri e dal peso di 700 quintali, non venne mai realizzata, anche per le vicissitudini politiche del committente. Di essa ci restano solo delle idee sul procedimento di fusione (avrebbe dovuto essere fusa, capovolta, in una enorme fossa) e disegni preparatori, che ci mostrano diverse soluzioni (un cavallo al passo oppure rampante sopra un soldato), perché persino il modello in terracotta, esposto nel 1493 in anteprima alla festa per le nozze di Bianca Maria Sforza, venne distrutto dalle truppe francesi di Luigi XII più o meno negli stessi giorni in cui Leonardo abbandonava la città, portando con sé i propri manoscritti.

Il Codice Atlantico (Milano, Biblioteca Ambrosiana, Sala del Tesoro) inizia la sua esistenza individuale nel penultimo decennio del Cinquecento, quando Pompeo Leoni riunì in un unico volume circa 400 fogli di disegni e scritti leonardeschi di differente argomento, estensione e datazione, intitolandoli “Disegni di machine et delle arti, secreti et altre cose di Leonardo da Vinci racolti da Pompeo Leoni”. In questo codice, che prese il nome dal grande formato, da atlante appunto, che lo contraddistingueva (è il più voluminoso e ampio dei codici vinciani), Leoni incollò fogli e foglietti, alcuni dei quali, quando erano scritti da entrambe le parti, venivano attaccati solo per i bordi. Al Leoni il materiale era pervenuto dopo che Francesco Melzi, erede di dipinti, manoscritti e strumenti vari di Leonardo, lo aveva trasferito nella sua villa di Vaprio d’Adda, nei dintorni di Milano. Alla morte di Leoni nel 1610 il codice passò a Polidoro Calchi, che lo vendette al marchese Arconati, il quale nel 1637 lo donò alla Biblioteca Ambrosiana, dove rimase fino al 1796, quando fu requisito e trasportato alla Biblioteca Nazionale di Parigi dalle truppe napoleoniche, facendo ritorno a Milano nel 1815 dopo la caduta del Bonaparte, peraltro rischiando di finire altrove visto che la scrittura sinistrorsa di Leonardo fu scambiata per cinese e dovette intervenire il Canova per indirizzare le cose nel verso giusto.
Originariamente sui 400 fogli del codice (dal formato di 64,5 x 43,5 cm.) erano posizionate circa 1.750 carte, poi, con le successive revisioni e modifiche, si è arrivati agli attuali 1.119 fogli per un totale di 1.286 carte, distribuite in 12 volumi dopo il restauro del 1962-1970 (ultimamente si è provveduto a una sfascicolatura per agevolare la fruizione espositiva).
Tanti e disparati sono i temi trattati, sebbene vi sia una certa prevalenza di argomenti scientifici e tecnici, anche a causa della cronologia di molti fogli, databili al primo soggiorno milanese del maestro. Si va dalla matematica all’astronomia, dalla botanica all’anatomia, dall’ingegneria civile a quella militare, dalla fisica all’ottica e alla geografia, e non mancano gli studi per il rinnovamento urbanistico di Milano, i bozzetti per opere come l’Adorazione dei Magi e la Battaglia di Anghiari, gli schizzi caricaturali, oltre a pensieri e componimenti vari. Innumerevoli i progetti ideati, tra cui, solo per fare alcuni esempi: pompe per il sollevamento dell’acqua destinate alla costruzione di chiuse (le “viti di Archimede”); marchingegni bellici come una ruota con quattro balestre o i mortai muniti di un meccanismo per regolare la gittata, con palle che dopo il lancio si aprono per liberarne altre; macchine per sollevare i pesi grazie a un albero orizzontale e a ruote dentate; girarrosti automatici mossi dall’aria calda; strumenti chirurgici, come un divaricatore o una sega dalla particolare foggia. E poi specchi ustori, macchine utensili, intagliatrici, escavatrici, argani, filatoi, tamburi meccanici, acciarini, respiratori subacquei, paracaduti e persino un prototipo di automobile.

la Stanza della Segnatura e
i primi capolavori romani
Segnatura significa firma e per molto tempo si è pensato che la Stanza della Segnatura fosse una sorta di ufficio papale destinato alla firma dei decreti pontifici e altre pratiche analoghe. Ma ricerche più approfondite hanno dimostrato che questa Stanza era in realtà una biblioteca, distinta dalla grande Biblioteca Vaticana ma di uso più strettamente personale per il papa, ed è lecito pensare che contenesse una selezione di testi giuridico - amministrativi tali da giustificare una funzione tra il carattere pubblico e il carattere privato dell’ambiente. Certo che il tono sapienziale delle decorazioni fa pensare a un luogo destinato all’esercizio di funzioni di massimo rilievo nella vita politica e personale del pontefice. Il Vasari racconta che, quando il papa si rese conto della validità del progetto, peraltro steso sotto la sua personale responsabilità, come attesta Paolo Giovio, e delle prime realizzazioni raffaellesche, mandò a casa gli altri pittori e affidò a Raffaello tutta l’impresa. Su due stipiti di finestra della Sala è iscritta la data 1511, ottava del pontificato di Giulio II, che dovrebbe essere la data di completamento dei lavori.
In verità, nella Stanza qualche cosa degli interventi precedenti a Raffaello rimane, perché i quattro arconi illusionistici che incorniciano le quattro grandi scene raffaellesche sono decorati secondo un sistema che appare antecedente all’urbinate e la struttura della volta soprastante sembra dovuta al progetto del Sodoma. Comunque, il problema fondamentale è quale sia il primo affresco eseguito da Raffaello nella Stanza, perché il Vasari sostiene che fu La Scuola di Atene, mentre esiste ed è stata molo seguita una teoria del Bellori, formulata alla fine del Seicento, secondo cui il primo affresco sarebbe stato la cosiddetta Disputa sul SS. Sacramento, in cui ancora si vede un residuo di fondo oro di pintoricchiesca memoria e l’impostazione generale segue modelli più arcaici e meglio si collega all’ultimo periodo di Raffaello a Firenze.
In ogni caso, va osservato come la logica vorrebbe che il pittore prima degli affreschi parietali avesse messo mano alla volta in un momento cruciale, in cui Raffaello diventa il pittore umanista per antonomasia e conferma l’evoluzione linguistica conseguita nel Trasporto Borghese.

Non si esagera quando si afferma che Michelangelo Buonarroti (1475-1564) è il più grande artista di tutti i tempi, perché con le sue opere, da lui ideate e realizzate in splendida solitudine (non tollerava aiuti, e quando li richiese li licenziò subito) e tra tormenti ed entusiasmi creativi, le arti belle, cioè la scultura e la pittura, toccarono vette mai più raggiunte per qualità formali e contenuti spirituali, per intensità rappresentativa e carica emotiva, per suggestioni di natura e sentimento umano. Con lui il Rinascimento perviene nell’arte all’apice, tanto che con la sua morte se ne fa spesso decretare la fine, perché si chiude un’epoca dominata dall’individuo che, facendo leva sulle sue forze, vuole conoscere e governare la realtà, e fa lo stesso che questa sia il mondo (come avviene per il filosofo e lo scienziato), la società (per il politico) o la materia (per l’artista).
A ben vedere, Michelangelo, che il padre Lodovico avrebbe voluto uomo di lettere o di legge, si sentiva sinceramente e inesorabilmente scultore, più che pittore, e salvo eccezioni (e che eccezioni se si fa cadere l’occhio sulla Cappella Sistina, o meglio se l’occhio lo si volge all’insù e davanti a sé entrandovi), non si può dargli torto, perché è nella titanica lotta con un blocco di marmo che l’artista esprimeva al meglio la propria furia plasmatrice, poteva dare vita con le proprie mani – novello demiurgo – a nuove creature, liberate a colpi di scalpello dalla materia che le racchiudeva e corrispondenti a quell’idea che, nel segno della filosofia neoplatonica di cui era imbevuta la corte fiorentina di Lorenzo il Magnifico, il suo illuminato mecenate, risiedeva nella mente dell’artifex e che aveva una prima traduzione nel disegno, punto di passaggio essenziale per la nascita dell’opera d’arte e strumento che il Buonarroti padroneggiava come pochi.

Il David e altri capolavori
La fama procuratagli dalle opere romane gli aprono le porte di Firenze, per i cui vertici, rappresentati dal gonfaloniere Pier Soderini, partorisce quello che è forse il suo capolavoro tout court, sempre che sia possibile fare una graduatoria fra una tale costellazione di opere maestre: il David. Nel settembre del 1501 Michelangelo comincia a scolpire febbrilmente quell’enorme blocco di marmo di Carrara che in passato era stato sbozzato senza costrutto da altri scultori (Agostino di Duccio nel 1462 e Antonio Rossellino nel 1476) e che, come pare confessasse all’amico Francesco Granacci, ambiva da tempo di poter modellare. Dopo oltre due anni di lavoro ispirato e segreto (per lui l’arte è una sfida tra l’artista e la materia a cui nessun altro deve partecipare) dal masso fuoriesce un colosso lucente che, in luogo del tradizionale adolescente che vince Golia sfruttando l’astuzia, effigia un giovane uomo nel pieno della forza fisica, dalla muscolatura atletica e con uno sguardo accigliato che lascia trasparire una fierezza inscalfibile e una determinazione implacabile. La statua affascina talmente sia i fiorentini sia una commissione appositamente costituita (composta anche da grandi artisti come Botticelli, Perugino, Ghirlandaio, Giuliano da Sangallo, Filippino Lippi e forse lo stesso Leonardo da Vinci, con cui pure sembra non corresse buon sangue) che si decide, con il benestare dell’autore, di metterla non nella cattedrale di S. Maria del Fiore, come era preventivato, bensì all’ingresso di Palazzo Vecchio in piazza della Signoria, a simbolo della potenza politica e culturale della Repubblica (dal 1873 il David è albergato nella Galleria dell’Accademia, mentre una copia in marmo lo sostituisce dal 1910 nella piazza, accortezza che non ha impedito che fosse nuovamente oggetto di atti vandalici – nel 1991 gli è stata spezzata la punta del piede sinistro – dopo quello che durante i tumulti antimedicei del 1527 gli provocò l’amputazione di un braccio, per fortuna gelosamente custodito dal Vasari e riattaccato nel 1543).
L’Opera del Duomo riuscì comunque ad ottenere un lavoro del Buonarroti, perché, se il David non entrò mai nella cattedrale, il San Matteo vi dimorò a lungo (fino al 1834, quando fu trasferito alla sede attuale della Galleria dell’Accademia), per quanto sia l’unica delle dodici statue che il maestro avrebbe dovuto realizzare per contratto. Questa scultura è comunque incompiuta dandoci modo di apprezzare il celebre non finito di Michelangelo, il cui procedimento di lavoro prende le mosse sbozzando il lato principale del blocco, togliendo via via la materia “in eccesso” in modo che la figura emerga come se sfuggisse da una prigione. E con il nome di Prigioni sono infatti conosciute altre sculture michelangiolesche, come le quattro oggi conservate alla Galleria dell’Accademia di Firenze, volute per il proprio mausoleo da papa Giulio II (con cui condivideva lo stesso carattere scontroso e ostinato), un incarico inizialmente faraonico che fu volta per volta ridimensionato e che si protrasse per circa quarant’anni snervando l’artista, che lo definì una “tragedia”, riuscendo comunque a creare un altro capolavoro come il Mosè (Roma, S. Pietro in Vincoli), un’opera, forse elaborata in due tappe, immediatamente ammirata per la sua potenza plastica e soprattutto per il suo formidabile realismo, tanto che si narra che lo stesso autore abbia scagliato il martello addosso alla statua perché irritato dal suo silenzio.
Un altro papa, Leone X, gli affidò l’edificazione della facciata della basilica di S. Lorenzo a Firenze e dell’annessa Sagrestia Nuova, con i monumenti sepolcrali di Giuliano de’ Medici, duca di Nemours e di Lorenzo de’ Medici, duca di Urbino, sotto i quali sono collocate in posizione reclinata e apparentemente instabile due coppie di sculture: La Notte e Il Giorno, da un lato, e Il Crepuscolo e L’Aurora, dall’altro, statue che, oltre a essere dolenti allegorie del tempo che passa, mostrano differenti modalità di lavorazione della superficie, da un massimo di levigatezza a uno scabro leggero, in certi punti con tratti di non finito, il che provoca variazioni degli effetti di luce. Al proposito va notato che l’arte di Michelangelo ha una sua evoluzione proprio in riferimento al trattamento delle superfici, partendo dalle opere giovanili che appaiono, in senso generale, più lisce e accurate, passando per quelle della maturità, più granulose e grezze, e terminando con le ultime, quasi non trattate e lasciate appositamente non finite, come a dimostrare che la forma è contenuta nella materia, anteponendo modernamente la valenza espressiva alla figura rappresentativa, l’interpretazione all’imitazione, la morale alla tecnica.
Ogni scultura del Buonarroti è dotata di una formidabile solidità e forza, ed è caratterizzata dall’intensità del movimento e dal rilievo travagliato, sovente con inflessioni liriche. Tutte sono memorabili, ma qui ricordiamo, seguendo un ordine cronologico di massima, la Madonna col Bambino e san Giovannino, nota come “Tondo Pitti” (Firenze, Museo Nazionale del Bargello), dall’aspetto incompiuto e destinata a una meditazione privata dato il suo tono intimo, il Cristo Risorto (Roma, S. Maria sopra Minerva), che in realtà è una seconda versione dell’artista in quanto la prima versione (forse quella oggi nella chiesa di San Vincenzo Martire a Bassano Romano) venne scartata a causa di una venatura nera nel blocco di marmo, il Genio della Vittoria (Firenze, Palazzo Vecchio), uno dei primi esempi di figura serpentinata, incardinata su contrapposti, che Daniele da Volterra propose senza successo come ornamento della tomba di Michelangelo, il Bruto (Firenze, Museo Nazionale del Bargello), un busto autografo nella testa più che nel panneggio, e l’Apollo-David, duplicità iconografica che rispecchierebbe la prima idea di raffigurare il giovane pastore vittorioso che calpesta la testa tagliata di Golia, e la successiva scelta, forse condizionata dal cambiamento della destinazione o della committenza, di eternare il dio della bellezza, con un abbozzato sole, suo attributo, sotto il piede. Da menzionare infine tre “Pietà” degli anni estremi: la Pietà Bandini del Museo dell’Opera del Duomo di Firenze, che originariamente l’artista aveva pensato per il proprio monumento funebre, tanto da ritrarsi in Nicodemo, la Pietà di Palestrina della Galleria dell’Accademia, sempre a Firenze, e la straziante (e straordinaria) Pietà Rondanini del Museo d’Arte Antica del Castello Sforzesco di Milano, sicuramente il marmo che ebbe l’onore di ricevere l’ultimo colpo di scalpello del maestro, opera non finita come non finita era per lui l’esistenza dell’uomo.

verso la Stanza di Eliodoro
La Stanza di Eliodoro è l’apoteosi della carriera raffaellesca e anche, entro certi limiti, il suo crollo. Il progetto raffaellesco, consistente in una sorta di “fotografia” della realtà culturale e sociale, in cui era immerso, proiettata in una dimensione allegorica e filosofica, ma nutrita dal senso di una palpitante quotidianità, toccava il culmine in questo capolavoro assoluto. La scena della Liberazione di San Pietro è un prodigio di tessitura luminosa. L’invenzione suprema della grata, dietro a cui si profilano le figure, costituisce già, da sola, un’acquisizione sbalorditiva all’arte della pittura in generale e introduce il tema della notte e della luce abbacinante in diretto contrasto con una forza e una qualità che soltanto il Caravaggio, quasi cento anni dopo, sarà in grado di riprendere e sviluppare.
La Messa di Bolsena è un altro autentico miracolo dell’arte con una tale vita interiore delle immagini che raramente aveva raggiunto una simile intensità, mentre la Cacciata di Eliodoro dal tempio assume un significato politico, ideologico ed estetico tali da rendere questo affresco una delle opere di più ardua comprensione dell’intera storia dell’arte occidentale. L’ultima scena, quella dell’Incontro di Attila e Leone Magno, infatti, pone già dei dubbi lasciando perplessi anche i contemporanei. Non vi si vede più quella eccezionale forza e pregnanza della mano di Raffaello, ma è evidente un abbassamento della qualità che si collega direttamente con l’altro affresco della Battaglia di Ostia, nella successiva Stanza dell’Incendio di Borgo, compiuta tra il 1514 e il 1515, dove le tendenze appena adombrate nella Stanza di Eliodoro toccano un culmine, oltre il quale la personalità di Raffaello pittore subirà una svolta definitiva tale da portarlo verso un singolare declino.
La Stanza di Eliodoro era destinata alle udienze papali e, in effetti, è stato sempre notato che l’argomento fondamentale illustrato in questa stanza è quello dell’intervento diretto di Dio nella storia con uno spirito che contempera l’influenza del mondo ebraico con quello cattolico, in un’ottica che giungeva vicinissima a quella che avrebbe portato Lutero e Calvino alla Riforma protestante. Nella Stanza di Eliodoro il papato mette in campo i punti essenziali della dottrina ed è lecito sostenere che questa sia una stanza integralmente ideologica. Solo che l’insistenza della Curia era nell’idea del miracolo, attraverso il quale la presenza divina si manifesta nella storia, ma il miracolo cattolico è un evento che travalica l’ordine, precostituito da Dio stesso, degli eventi e della storia in generale, mentre l’orientamento protestante fu quello di espungere la necessità del miracolo a conferma della volontà divina, il cui miracolo è quotidianità e presenza nella vita del fedele e non rottura dell’ordine naturale delle cose.

LA VILLA
E IL GIARDINO:
l’architettura di Andrea Palladio e
gli affreschi del Veronese
Nel trattare le ville di Palladio, l’apertura verso il giardino e l’inserimento nel paesaggio circostante vengono spesso dati per scontati, senza scaturire da una vera e propria riflessione. In verità, la maggior parte delle sue ville mostra una distorsione chiaramente voluta del rapporto tra interno ed esterno, tipica dell’epoca e in particolare del Manierismo. Proprio su questo punto importante, tutte le opere di Palladio si differenziano dagli ideali del Rinascimento. Per una villa umanistica rinascimentale, il godimento del giardino e del paesaggio era difatti uno degli ideali più importanti. È per questo che la storia dei giardini suscita sempre particolare interesse e ogni epoca ha i suoi racconti di signori che circondano le loro case di campagna con giardini e che traggono piacere dal paesaggio circostante.
Già Boccaccio aveva rappresentato nel Decamerone giardini che rassomigliano sorprendentemente a quelli del Rinascimento. Ma che quella ritratta sia solo l’illusione fittizia di un ideale paradisiaco diventa chiaro al più tardi alla fine della descrizione, quando fanno la loro comparsa animali pacifici, come cervi e caprioli, che pascolano mansueti nel giardino, un incubo per ogni giardiniere che ne conosca le conseguenze. Proprio per questo nei trattati sui giardini non mancano mai indicazioni sull’altezza dei mura di cinta, che devono riuscire a impedire l’ingresso degli animali selvatici nel giardino.
Non era invece finzione artistica il giardino di Petrarca, sempre menzionato nelle sue lettere e che per il poeta, chiaramente meno dotato come giardiniere, fu una vera croce e delizia. Da virtuoso rappresentante del pensiero medievale, egli loda Dio e la perfezione del suo creato nel giardino, che assurge a luogo ideale per questo inno. La cura del giardino, e quindi del creato divino, diventa così una forma praticata di celebrazione del servizio religioso.
Anche i giardini monastici vanno interpretati in questo senso. Completamente diversa è la situazione del giardino nel Rinascimento e nel Barocco, dove l’uomo sta sempre più in primo piano ed è il suo ingegno, piuttosto che la creazione divina, a essere oggetto di celebrazione. L’uomo finisce poi con il perdersi nella hybris moderna, secondo la quale la creazione è incompiuta ed è lui stesso a essere chiamato a completarla.
Un’altra rottura, altrettanto importante, è la crisi dell’epoca moderna che ha inizio nel XVI secolo: non solo le scoperte scientifiche privarono l’uomo della sua centralità nel cosmo e quindi nel creato, ma i nessi del mondo della natura risultarono essere molto più complicati di quanto non si credesse in origine. L’uomo del Rinascimento, che riteneva di dominare il mondo e che credeva di poterlo capire osservandolo, falliva. Mentre Leonardo da Vinci poteva ancora affermare che ciò che veniva riprodotto sulla retina era la realtà, ora il mondo era però diventato più complesso, incomprensibile, a volte persino ostile. Il giardino, l’immagine ideale del mondo, aveva il compito di rispecchiare tutto questo. Erano tre le possibilità in questo senso: il giardino poteva rappresentare questo conflitto, come nella toscana Bomarzo; oppure lo poteva ignorare, come faceva di buon grado il Manierismo in arte, avendo come fine l’artificialità del fasto di corte ed escludendo del tutto il contatto con la natura; oppure, infine, si rinunciava al giardino e al paesaggio, poiché entrambi non costituivano più un ideale. Fu quest’ultima variante a diventare regola: che non ci fosse quasi più bisogno di giardini e paesaggi è dimostrato dalla maggior parte delle ville in Veneto. Per quanto un libro sui giardini delle ville sia sicuramente interessante, un libro sulla loro assenza nella maggioranza delle ville sarebbe ancora più avvincente.
I pochi parchi realizzati che fossero più di semplici orti, creati quindi solo per soddisfare le necessità della casa, servivano soprattutto ad assecondare i bisogni della vita di corte. Per questo motivo furono creati solo per quelle ville che avevano particolari esigenze rappresentative, ossia per vere e proprie maison de plaisance. Il prototipo veneziano in questo senso è il giardino della villa di Caterina Cornaro, Regina di Cipro, ad Altivole presso Asolo.

Chi si aspettasse che colui che è stato così abile con lo scalpello da creare opere come il David, il Mosè o la Pietà, non può esserlo altrettanto con il pennello, guardi la Cappella Sistina nei Palazzi Vaticani e si ricreda subito. Gli affreschi michelangioleschi della Volta (1508-1512) e della parete dell’altare con il Giudizio Universale (1536-1541) costituiscono un tale miracolo artistico da lasciare stupefatti, soprattutto se si tiene presente che si devono a un solo uomo (i collaboratori vennero presto esonerati, ricorrendo ai garzoni solo per compiti minori come la preparazione dei colori), dall’ideazione al disegno dei cartoni e alla stesura a fresco, operando, nel caso della Volta, sospeso a venti metri da terra sopra uno speciale ponteggio fissato ai muri laterali, stando sdraiato, a lume di candela, tanto da compromettere la propria salute con conseguenze persino a lungo termine all’apparato muscolo-scheletrico, per la scomodità della postura assunta per troppo tempo, e agli occhi, per lo sgocciolamento della pittura e probabilmente per il protratto sforzo di messa a fuoco di grandi campiture a distanza ravvicinata. Per giunta fu un’impresa che l’artista accettò controvoglia, poiché è risaputo come non si sentisse pittore (“el non esser la mia professione”, scrisse al padre poco dopo aver avviato il lavoro), e allora occorre ringraziare la caparbietà e magari la lungimiranza di papa Giulio II della Rovere, che in pratica gli impose la decorazione della volta sospendendo la costruzione del proprio fastoso mausoleo, a cui invece il Buonarroti tanto teneva (si era addirittura recato a Carrara per scegliere i marmi), e di Paolo III Farnese, che gli sollecitò il Giudizio dopo che l’artista si sentiva esentato dall’incarico in seguito alla scomparsa del precedente pontefice, Clemente VII, che glielo aveva commissionato.
Anche nella Cappella Sistina il corpo umano, rappresentato nei vari movimenti e atteggiamenti, fa da mattatore, come è proprio di Michelangelo (il disinteresse per i dettagli paesaggistici salta all’occhio sfogliando il suo catalogo) e come aveva fatto notare il biografo Condivi, secondo cui egli “espresse tutto quelché d’un corpo umano può far l’arte della pittura, non lasciando indietro atto, o moto alcuno”. Allo stesso modo, spicca la mano scultorea dell’artista, tanto che estremizzando si può asserire che la sua pittura non sia altro che la traduzione piana e colorata della sua scultura. Tra l’altro, a proposito della disputa sul primato tra scultura e pittura, egli aveva dichiarato che “la pittura mi pare più tenuta buona, quanto più va verso il rilievo, et il rilievo più tenuto cattivo, quanto più va verso la pittura”, sicché si comprende come questi affreschi siano più che altro – ma qui sta il loro stile inimitabile, l’impronta del genio – delle composizioni di corpi statuari eseguiti pittoricamente.

dai cartoni per la Sistina
alla stanza dell’Incendio di Borgo
La presenza di Raffaello nella Cappella Sistina è rimasta per sempre latente, ma fu rilevante e entro certi limiti determinante per tutta la sua carriera. L’ingresso di Raffaello in quello spazio, dominato fino all’inverosimile dalla figura di Michelangelo Buonarroti, avviene nel 1514 quando muore il Bramante. Si tratta di una questione decisiva. L’influenza del Bramante su Raffaello dovette essere enorme sia sul piano pratico sia su quello teorico. Sembra certo che Raffaello abbia ottenuto l’incarico delle Stanze Vaticane tramite Bramante, che lo protesse e certamente ne favorì l’incontro con la cerchia suprema dominante la Curia, quel gruppo di iniziati che trovarono in Raffaello il loro esponente artistico per antonomasia. Se si ammette che la Stanza della Segnatura sia una sorta di “ritratto” di un ambiente sociale elitario e autoreferenziale, così come apparve a Erasmo da Rotterdam in visita a Roma proprio in quegli anni, si deve anche riconoscere che l’influsso del Bramante sull’apprestamento dei grandi spazi architettonici dipinti nella Segnatura vada rimarcato rispetto alla progettualità raffaellesca, riscontrabile nel Matrimonio della Vergine a Brera, anche nei confronti con i modelli perugineschi e pintoricchieschi, evidenti per Raffaello, dalla Cappella Sistina stessa, in cui la Consegna delle Chiavi del Perugino restava un prototipo incontrovertibile, alla Cappella Bufalini in S. Maria in Ara Coeli del Pintoricchio, altro modello esemplare di dilatazione razionale degli spazi e di maestà dell’ambientazione.
Ma è altrettanto evidente come vi sia un passaggio radicale tra la spazialità di un capolavoro come il Matrimonio della Vergine di Brera e la spazialità messa in atto da Raffaello nella Scuola di Atene. Qui è stata sempre riconosciuta un’eco forte del progetto bramantesco per il nuovo S. Pietro nel tempio che sembra unire le due nature celeste e terrestre. Anche se la verifica tecnica non è possibile, la suggestione resta evidente e non c’è dubbio sul fatto che una specie di medio proporzionale tra una concezione quale è quella riflessa nel Matrimonio della Vergine e una concezione quale è quella riflessa nella Scuola di Atene sia nella cosiddetta Città ideale di Urbino, uno dei dipinti più enigmatici dell’intera storia dell’arte italiana ma indubbiamente cruciale per la concezione raffaellesca matura.
La Città ideale è connessa con Raffaello solo per il fatto di trovarsi in Urbino, patria del pittore. Dato che non si conosce la storia esterna di questo sommo dipinto, non è possibile spingere l’analisi oltre. Si possono tuttavia fare alcune osservazioni collaterali che aiutano a comprendere la svolta decisiva nella carriera raffaellesca, immediatamente dopo la morte del Bramante. Non c’è dubbio, infatti, che esista un Raffaello che persegue determinati scopi durante la vita del Bramante e un Raffaello differente dopo la morte del grande architetto. Ora, l’unica cosa che può essere detta con certezza è che, a distanza di un anno circa dalla scomparsa del Bramante seguita da uno strascico di polemiche infinite sui comportamenti di questo singolarissimo personaggio, osannato e deplorato con pari energia da opposte fazioni, Raffaello riceve dal papa Leone X la nomina a praefectus, come conservatore delle antichità romane, a seguito della quale il maestro redigerà una celebre lettera al papa contenente le prescrizioni e le riflessioni volte alla tutela delle Belle Arti, tanto che è lecito considerare Raffaello primo Soprintendente alle antichità. In che modo concretamente Raffaello abbia esercitato tale funzione negli ultimi cinque anni che gli restavano da vivere, è molto difficile dirlo. Ma è evidente come la sua concezione della città antica calata negli affreschi, eseguiti tra il 1509 e il 1514, lo portasse sulla via bramantesca, corretta opportunamente proprio da quelle polemiche, in base alle quali Bramante era stato ripetutamente tacciato di procedere alle demolizioni dell’antico e, proprio da queste censure, nacque l’incarico a Raffaello, da un lato, allievo ideale del Bramante, ma, dall’altro, autonomo e profondo esperto delle cose antiche. Ora è evidente che la concezione figurativa, riflessa nella cosiddetta Città ideale di Urbino, è molto vicina alla rilettura fatta da Raffaello sulle idee bramantesche e che prese corpo nella Stanza della Segnatura. Ma è stato sempre notato come la concezione figurativa e architettonica della Città ideale di Urbino fosse molto vicina alle idee espresse da Piero della Francesca, sia nel concreto del suo lavoro proprio alla corte di Urbino, di cui è testimonianza suprema la Pala di Brera, sia nel suo lavoro teoretico culminato nel trattato De perspectiva pingendi, la cui pubblicazione coincideva con i primissimi anni di studio di Raffaello stesso. La questione inerente alla Città ideale di Urbino è stata, però, sempre complicata dal fatto che nulla si sa della committenza, dell’origine dell’autore e della funzione del mirabile dipinto. Vi si avverte un’aura pierfrancescana, lo si avvicina anche a Francesco di Giorgio Martini fino ad arrivare a immaginare che autore sia stato il Bramante in persona il quale, effettivamente, fu anche pittore e di gran valore. Ma il confronto tra le opere pittoriche più attendibilmente riferibili al Bramante e la Città ideale di Urbino non ha mai convinto gli esegeti più consapevoli né si è mai potuto spiegare fino in fondo a cosa servisse un’opera del genere la quale apparentemente non ha un soggetto (cosa ai limiti dell’inconcepibile per la mentalità rinascimentale), ha dimensioni molto grandi per supporre un utilizzo di mero arredo casalingo e denota una qualità elevatissima riferibile solo a una mano eccelsa. Resta, invece, piuttosto convincente l’ambientazione in area pierfrancescana dell’opera. Vi si avverte un tipo di stesura che, mutatis mutandis, si ritrova in Fra’ Carnevale, in Bartolomeo della Gatta, in Lorenzo da Viterbo, in Piermatteo d’Amelia. Ma tutto ciò non aiuta neppure a inquadrare con certezza la datazione dell’opera. Con la stessa plausibilità potrebbe essere collocata negli anni Settanta, Ottanta o Novanta del Quattrocento, perché manca un elemento decisivo di datazione che dirima ogni dubbio. Tuttavia, la lettura in chiave altamente pierfrancescana porta verso Raffaello, perché Raffaello vide certamente a Roma, nella zona delle Stanze, l’affresco che Piero della Francesca vi aveva realizzato e che egli fece demolire o coprire.

Sovrintendente alle Belle Arti
Nel 1516 il cardinale Giulio de’ Medici commissiona a Raffaello una gigantesca pala d’altare con il soggetto della Trasfigurazione da destinare alla cattedrale di Narbonne in Francia, di cui aveva ottenuto la titolarità. Si tratta di una commissione prestigiosa, per la quale Raffaello venne messo a confronto con Sebastiano del Piombo, al quale il cardinale ordinava nel contempo la Resurrezione di Lazzaro, oggi alla National Gallery di Londra. Sebastiano dovette avere ben presente la svolta stilistica e compositiva operata da Raffaello nella serie dei Cartoni per la Cappella Sistina e si impossessò dell’idea inerente alla figura del Cristo, quale protagonista della tragedia antica, in termini analoghi a quelli concepiti appunto da Raffaello per gli arazzi con le storie dei Principi degli Apostoli. Gli antichi hanno parlato di una vera e propria “gara” tra Raffaello e Sebastiano, ma non vi sono chiare prove di ciò. Si sa soltanto che Raffaello e Sebastiano realizzarono le opere richieste, ma nessuna delle due approdò alla cattedrale di Narbonne. La Trasfigurazione fu esposta, invece, accanto al letto di morte di Raffaello, all’atto della scomparsa del maestro nel 1520. Non è dato sapere se Raffaello si sia messo subito al lavoro. Di solito si tende a considerare la Trasfigurazione come l’ultima opera di Raffaello, ma non c’è prova certa. Senza dubbio, è da inquadrare nell’ambito della politica filofrancese che il papa Leone X stava conducendo con enorme impegno e dispendio di energie già a partire dal momento dell’incarico a Raffaello come praefectus delle Antichità. In effetti, tra il 1516 e il 1518, sono frequenti gli interventi di Raffaello per soddisfare esigenze di rappresentanza e rapporti culturali intessuti dal pontefice e da altri personaggi della Curia, come appunto Giulio de’ Medici con la monarchia francese. Ma per ora l’attenzione dell’urbinate era concentrata sul cardinale Dovizi da Bibbiena, che lo aveva incaricato di una impresa nuova e particolarissima indubbiamente degna del nuovo compito dell’urbinate. Il cardinale Dovizi da Bibbiena era diventato uno dei protettori più influenti del maestro e intendeva inserirlo a pieno titolo nella sua famiglia, dandogli per moglie la nipote Maria. Il matrimonio non avvenne, ma Raffaello lavorò per la dimora del cardinale, facendo decorare in forme nuove e sorprendenti la loggetta esterna e la Stufetta, un ambiente destinato alle abluzioni, copiato dal modello dei bagni antichi. Le decorazioni in stucchi e affreschi della Stufetta e della loggetta sono conservate, anche se in mediocre stato, e rappresentano forse il primo tentativo di Raffaello di mettere a frutto in modo personale e peculiare l’esperienza che stava svolgendo come Soprintendente alle antichità.
La questione merita la più grande attenzione, perché permette di inquadrare con chiarezza tutta una serie di iniziative, intraprese o condotte da Raffaello negli ultimi quattro anni della sua vita. In sostanza il papa chiedeva a Raffaello di tracciare una nuova e scientifica mappa della Roma antica, preservandone i monumenti e recuperandone il significato, anche rispetto agli incombenti problemi di sopravvivenza istituzionale del papato stesso, minacciato come mai forse era accaduto prima e come sarebbe accaduto pochi mesi dopo con l’inizio della Riforma protestante. Alcune personalità eminenti della Curia, quali il cardinale Dovizi da Bibbiena, Agostino Chigi il banchiere papale, i cardinali Giulio de’ Medici e Lorenzo de’ Rossi, Marino Branconio dell’Aquila, il cardinale Alessandro Farnese, premevano perché la Curia papale venisse radicalmente secolarizzata e fosse portato a compimento quel processo di riforma che Giulio II aveva introdotto, per emancipare il potere papale dai condizionamenti sempre più insidiosi dell’autorità laica capitolina a Roma, la cui progressiva espansione avrebbe potuto frenare, se non annichilire, le sfere di influenza del papato e indebolirne oltre i limiti sopportabili le finanze.
Dovizi da Bibbiena era uno degli uomini con cui Raffaello era entrato in più profonda sintonia e fu lui l’iniziatore di una linea di tendenza artistica che sarebbe culminata, di lì a pochissimo, nella catastrofica impresa delle Logge vaticane. A Raffaello, detentore in quel momento assoluto del potere culturale nella città di Roma, viene chiesto di apprestare per il cardinale Dovizi da Bibbiena un ambiente di rievocazione classica, e Raffaello è in grado di orientare la sua scuola nella direzione dello studio e rifabbricazione del patrimonio architettonico e scultoreo classico che, in base alle disposizioni papali, non deve essere demolito e trattato come materiale da costruzione, ma deve essere fatto risorgere con i crismi di una filologia capace di diventare vero e proprio strumento di potere nelle mani di chi, solo, è abilitato ad attingere da quelle memorie.
Raffaello concepisce l’intelaiatura dell’insieme e dà il metodo di esecuzione. In sostanza, l’idea semplice e definitiva, su cui si basa, è la resurrezione dell’antico, integralmente filologico, ma trattato con libertà dal punto di vista dello stile. Anzi, gli allievi di Raffaello sono incoraggiati a mettere in campo l’assoluta spontaneità della loro mano, omologandosi in una ipotesi filologicamente inattendibile ma artisticamente suggestiva, per cui la pittura antica, quella della Domus Aurea in particolare, viene riproposta e riformulata sulla base di un principio naturalistico, che non è mera imitazione del reale, ma ricostruzione fantastica della storia passata con il criterio della rievocazione secondo un’ottica narrativa e fantastica. Nella Stufetta, Raffaello mette a lavorare Giulio Pippi, detto Giulio Romano, Giovanni da Udine e Giovan Francesco Penni. Il loro stile è affine e improntato a un senso ingenuo e quasi rozzo, desunto da una giovinezza immatura e divertita che ricompone l’Antico, copiandone scrupolosamente le intelaiature prospettiche, le grottesche, le decorazioni e gli emblemi, ma poi reinventandolo nelle parti narrative, come se il passato arrivasse a noi in forma di sogno ed enigma.

Agostino Chigi, il grande mecenate del Rinascimento ed amico di Raffaello, sposò la veneziana Francesca Ordeaschi il 28 agosto del 1519. Raffaello aveva apprestato tutti gli affreschi nella grande sala della Loggia, dove presumibilmente si svolse la cerimonia nuziale officiata dal papa Leone X in persona, che, per l’occasione, si recò presso la villa di Agostino. In una lettera, scritta nel gennaio 1519 da Leonardo Sellaio a Michelangelo Buonarroti, si dice che gli affreschi della Loggia erano già terminati, quindi, è lecito datare tutto il lavoro dentro il 1518, l’anno in cui Raffaello svolge una cospicua e fruttuosa attività di pittore per il Papa e l’anno in cui prepara la lettera sull’archeologia che verrà però stesa successivamente. È possibile, però, che la lettera fosse pronta per il giorno delle nozze, quale testimonianza dell’impegno dell’urbinate a sostegno di tutta la politica culturale del Papa non ristretta solo agli incarichi pittorici.
Nel frattempo, gli allievi di Raffaello lavoravano alla terza loggia vaticana con gli affreschi delle storie della Genesi, presumibilmente fuori dal controllo diretto del maestro. Il lavoro delle Logge vaticane doveva essere pronto nel giugno del 1519 con leggero anticipo sulle nozze del Chigi. Lo si sa da una lettera di Baldassarre Castiglione a Isabella d’Este. Il grande letterato scrive alla nobildonna in data 16 giugno e riferisce che l’enorme decorazione è compiuta. È probabile, poi, che Raffaello lavori contestualmente anche a un’altra opera destinata all’amico Branconio dell’Aquila, che egli citerà nel suo testamento. È la Pala della Visitazione, firmata, non datata e destinata alla chiesa di San Silvestro all’Aquila, un’opera fine e delicata che, malgrado rechi la firma dell’urbinate, è stata considerata dalla maggior parte degli esegeti come opera di bottega.
Ma, in sostanza, il problema della bottega interessa tutta l’attività del maestro nel corso del 1519, tanto che sembra quasi che la mano di Raffaello non sia più rintracciabile in alcun lavoro recante il suo nome, essendo tante e tali le discrepanze e le differenze tra un’opera e l’altra da far pensare che il maestro avesse completamente tralasciato il compito di esecutore pittorico per dedicarsi soltanto alla prediletta attività di architetto e di collaboratore a tutto tondo della politica culturale del papato, emergendo tra l’altro in quell’anno fatale un aspetto addirittura nuovo ma, forse, molto interessante per l’urbinate, quello di allestitore di spettacoli. Sappiamo infatti da dispacci di funzionari della corte ferrarese a Roma, attenti all’evolversi della preparazione del Trionfo di Bacco (che, forse, Raffaello mai cominciò), che il maestro, nel mese di marzo 1519, avesse lavorato alle scenografie della commedia di Ludovico Ariosto I Suppositi, rappresentata nell’ambito della Curia proprio nel momento in cui Raffaello sviluppa gli studi per la villa di Giulio de’ Medici, che sarà poi detta Villa Madama, sul Monte Mario come emblema della ritrovata classicità felice. È quell’approdo finale e agognato che avrebbe dovuto fungere da prototipo per un rinnovamento tutto in chiave antica della vita romana connessa con le attività di una Curia, integralmente secolarizzata a onta delle contestazioni luterane sempre più incisive e incalzanti, da quando il monaco agostiniano aveva diffuso le tesi di Wittemberg, raccogliendo l’adesione di numerosi principi tedeschi, che cominciavano a organizzarsi in un vero e proprio movimento politico, del quale Raffaello non poté, però, vedere gli sviluppi decisivi che si sarebbero avuti nel decennio successivo alla sua morte.
Quel che conta massimamente è la maturazione di Raffaello in direzione classica, proprio nel momento in cui una crisi spaventosa coinvolge la Curia e, inevitabilmente, tutte le personalità che vi gravitavano intorno. Sia le Logge vaticane, infatti, sia la loggia di Agostino Chigi vengono progettate secondo un’ottica di alta filologia che, fino a quel momento, era stata esclusa dagli orizzonti creativi dei pittori. Senza dubbio Raffaello aveva un grande precedente nel Pintoricchio e nella sua scuola, al quale spetta il merito della riesumazione delle grottesche antiche e l’invenzione di un sistema iconografico in cui la riproposta degli apparati decorativi e delle iconografie della classicità occupa un ruolo determinante nella creazione moderna.
Ma nel Pintoricchio e nei suoi scolari risulta relativamente assente la ricerca tecnica. In Raffaello, invece, il significato filologico prende il sopravvento sull’aspetto immediato delle immagini e diventa il criterio unificante di un gigantesco lavoro di ricerca e di creazione, su cui si baserà la nascita non soltanto di un’arte nuova ma di un nuovo concetto di arte in sé, dove l’antico e il moderno convivono in una inestinguibile “gara” di emulazione.
Raffaello in quegli anni studia, dunque, sulla carta archeologica di Roma e prende in esame in concreto i reperti antichi, che vaglia ed esamina contornato da una scuola nella quale si formano ingegni di eccezionale acume. Raffaello studia l’antico sotto il profilo tecnico-esecutivo. Giovanni da Udine, suo degnissimo discepolo, è, ad esempio, il primo che studia e recupera lo stucco bianco degli antichi, come del resto racconta esaurientemente il Vasari, inventando il sistema di mescolare alla calcina di travertino bianca il marmo bianco triturato, così come avevano fatto gli antichi con risultati di sconvolgente bellezza nella modellazione delle figure e nella esaltazione della morbidezza dell’epidermide.
Tale riscoperta si estendeva, peraltro, a tutto il sistema pittorico e scultoreo ispirato all’antico e, infatti, la Sala di Costantino in Vaticano, eseguita dagli allievi dopo la scomparsa del maestro e un’aspra battaglia per il mantenimento della commissione, è la riprova più concreta di tale atteggiamento. In quella sala meravigliosa, e problematica insieme, vero caposaldo dell’origine di una nuova arte moderna, è già compiutamente espressa la rivoluzione concepita da Raffaello per la rigenerazione di tutte le arti, che egli stava formulando attraverso l’articolazione stessa della scuola per come la venne elaborando negli ultimi due anni di vita. L’idea di Raffaello era quella di dividere i compiti in un gruppo unitario e controllato da un’unica mente programmatrice.

IN FLORENCE:
the workshop of Verrocchio
If has ever existed a universal genius this is Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519). His is the profile of a man from the extraordinary talent and versatile capabilities which have innovated and thoroughly explored art and science. Painter, sculptor and architect, but also mathematician and physicist, engineer and inventor, poet and writer, even philosopher: Leonardo is all this, and more, maybe too much more, because history has almost scolded his insatiable curiosity, his eagerness to know and do that led him to leave unfinished many works and projects in order to follow a new exploit, a recent interest, a sudden course of thoughts, or to test a new technique, which sometimes led him astray. Sometimes, history, was jealous of his own favorite, the one of art because Leonardo scientist took time and effort away from the incomparable creator of the Mona Lisa and the Last Supper, forcing us to enjoy so few masterpieces, and the one of science of because Leonardo artist has long overshadowed the level and the extent of the discoveries and the insights made in the domain of naturalistic disciplines, of which the amount of drawings and sketches of all kinds – engineering, mechanical, botanical, anatomical – is a clear indication. And just the drawing shows how in Leonardo art and science were not two separate scopes, because it was for him a means of scientific investigation of reality and at the same time, representing that reality, a tool for making art.
As often happens, such a prodigy of man was not slow to express his talent, and Andrea del Verrocchio (1435-1488) noticed it, where Ser Piero, notary, had put in a workshop his adolescent illegitimate son Leonardo. More sculptor than painter, Andrea di Francesco di Cione (this was his real name, then according to sources turned to Verrocchio because collaborator of the jeweler Giuliano Verrocchi) was the holder in Florence of a polyvalent laboratory, where, in addition to classical figurative arts, there were engineering and architecture works, and there was also a casting workshop, where was manufactured the copper sphere atop the dome of Brunelleschi in Santa Maria del Fiore. Leonardo, moreover, in his drawings proved to be very responsive to Brunelleschi's solutions, as is clear from the project of elevation of the Baptistery, if a sketch by Francesco Granacci is its faithful representation, confirming the story of Vasari, according to which he "showed will to raise the temple of San Giovanni di Fiorenza, and submit to it the stairs without ruining it; and yes, he persuaded him with such powerful reasons, that it looked like possible, although each one, after he had departed, knew by himself the impossibility of such venture. " The workshop hosted the likes of Perugino and Botticelli, but to its circle join also Domenico Ghirlandaio, master of Buonarroti, Francesco Botticini (1446-1498), to whom is attributed the Tobias and the three Archangels of the Uffizi sometimes ascribed directly to Verrocchio, Cosimo Rosselli (1439-1507), perhaps creator with Leonardo of the Nativity of Palazzo Vecchio in Florence, Piero di Cosimo (1461 ca. -1521), whose earliest evidence nod to the emerging style of Leonardo da Vinci , and Lorenzo di Credi (1459-1537), the latter by the way heir of Verrocchio and author of works such as the Madonna di Piazza of the Cathedral of Pistoia, where it was recognized the inventio of Leonardo, perhaps mediated by drawings. According to Vasari, Verrocchio was so impressed by the early pictorial skills exhibited by Leonardo in the multi-hand workmanship of the Baptism of Christ, today in the Uffizi, to desert brush and colors, what we might say a sense of inferiority that still did not stop him, according to some historians, to pay homage to his young student transmitting in the statue of the David (Florence, Bargello National Museum) his ephebic features, and in particular that ineffable gaze which reappears in the Mona Lisa, if it is true that in this the supreme artist projected himself.

RAPHAEL:
from his debut in Urbino
to the early masterpieces
The artistic environment of Urbino, in the last thirty years of the fifteenth century, was very relevant and inspiring, and Raphael was born in a world literally devoted to art. It is plausible that the young Raphael was formed in his father's workshop and had assimilated for time the high intellectual level which could not be missing. Giovanni Santi, the father, was not only a painter of remarkable qualities and conspicuous creativity, but was also a writer appreciated in the environment of the court and oriented on humanistic values of undeniable meaningfulness. He was a erudite, historian and theatrical author of some importance, who well knew the library of Duke Frederick rich in illuminated manuscripts, almost a compendium of the humanistic wisdom that at the court of Urbino found a most worthy dwelling, allowing the child Raphael to learn many aspects of fifteenth-century painting also of Florentine environment.
Giovanni Santi, had proved to have taken a significant step in the vindication of the role of the painter as inventor of the profound meaning of the artwork. The humanistic principle in force by the generation of Giotto and his followers, at the Court of Urbino is favored by the vertiginous development of the literary and theatrical doctrine, which implied a real step forward by the painter, attributing to art the guiding function of all the activities that had to do with his vision. In the Tiranni Chapel in the Church of San Domenico in Cagli, Giovanni Santi leaves one of his highest masterpieces, the Resurrection of Christ above an altarpiece with the Madonna with Child and Saints. The whole space of the front wall and the overhanging arch are invaded by a single fresco, in which the measure of the mutual proportions and the relationships between the characters are governed by a principle of total homogeneity. The space that depicts the Resurrection and the one on the underlying altarpiece is the same. The construction of the lower space is made on the basis of the principle of central perspective, composed with an illusive architecture; the space of the Resurrection is a landscape where the tomb of Christ is a pyramid, in which the sepulcher's recess corresponds to the backrest of the Virgin's throne below. Santi, within the traditional and consolidated iconography, invents the continuity of space and figures, for which the soldiers who sleep while the risen Christ blesses, rest one foot on the top frame of the underlying sacred representation, above which there is the rock of the village, where Christ is resurrected, which enters directly into the architectural structure of the Assembly of the Saints. The work is lovely, although harshly marked according to the flemish influence that in Urbino was inevitable for a master like Santi, but demonstrates an awareness of the invention by the humanist contrary to the conventions of form and anxious to give a solemn lesson to those who do not understand what painting is.

Starting from the Doni Portraits, Raffaello locates that dimension of the total redesigning of the acquired knowledge, which makes his painting a real transfiguration of previous history through the filter of a spirituality and an awareness which will guide him first to that sort of rehearsal of the new times which is the Transportation of Christ to the Sepulchre and then to the Stanza della Segnatura, where the men of the time saw the sign of a total regeneration and of the profound concept of the Renaissance, then developed in the following centuries in theoretical premises.
The two portraits were almost certainly executed together, but it’s mostly reputed that it has been painted before the one of his wife, in which Raphael introduced a considerable variation in the background (spotted by technical-scientific researches carried out on the painting), first thought of as an interior with a window and then as a landscape, while no variant was found in the portrait of her husband. Moreover, the presence on the back of both paintings of two scenes, due to the so-called Master of Serumido (variously identified in one of Raphael's Florentine peers), representing respectively the New generation descending from Pyrrha (behind the portrait of Maddalena) and the Flood (behind the Portrait of Agnolo), confirming the substantially contextual execution of the two works and puts the researcher in the best condition to conduct a thorough examination, decisive for the future career of Raphael.
Did Raphael arrive at these highest works suddenly, without a process of rapprochement? It is impossible to say for the lack of documentary data and the problem is exacerbated by the difficulty of a full dating. These are unequivocally bridal portraits and it is known that Agnolo and Maddalena Doni married on 31 January 1504. You can think that Raphael has travelled to Florence just to portray them and that the works were performed between the end of 1504 and the early 1505. However it is only an opinion not shared by all scholars, and it is therefore necessary to examine the question from more perspectives. The modern and autonomous Raphael was born here. There is no doubt that from this moment on Raphael has made the personal choice that will bring him to the complexity of the Transportation of Christ to the Sepulchre for Atalanta Baglioni and directly to the so-called Dispute over the Blessed Sacrament in the first Vatican Room. But in order to understand how and why he got to that sublime level we need to investigate more on the Doni Portraits.

The "Transportation of Christ to the Sepulchre" and other stories
It is believed that normally the Transportation of Christ to the Sepulchre, an absolute masterpiece by Raphael, was ordered by the Perugian noblewoman Atalanta Baglioni for the funeral chapel of the family in the Church of San Francesco al Prato. Raphael was aided in the execution of the altarpiece by Domenico Alfani from Perugia, who executed the moulding with the image of God the Father, while the predella with images of the theological virtues you would say performed by Raphael himself. It has always been noted as the painting is divided basically into two parts almost non-communicating with each other. One is the actual scene of the Transportation to the Sepulchre, exemplified on the classical model of the sarcophagus of Meleager. The other from the scene of the Fainting of Virgin, where someone wanted to see the influence of Michelangelo's Tondo Doni in the twisting of the figures, indeed poorly similar to those of the Tondo by Michelangelo.
It is possible that Raphael has started, in fact, from an iconographic setting of Peruginesque type to arrive then through a series of steps to that double level that would have taken him to the final formulation.
It was also noted the anomaly of the Transportation as Altarpiece. It is no longer the traditional group of the Madonna and saints, but a real and complex narration that suits more a fresco than a real and normal altarpiece. The relationship with roman culture was found either in some grievous typologies of the faces of the transporters, even recalling the sculpture of Laocoön, newfound in Rome in an excavation of 1506, and both in the same type of the dead body of Christ, pure and intact in a timeless youth, connectable to the Piety of San Pietro by Michelangelo Buonarroti delivered just seven years earlier and already famous.
That the Transportation was immediately a real triumph of a new and shocking art form is so certain to the point that the date, inscribed on it of 1507, must be carefully evaluated and does not necessarily seriously match to the delivery of the painting. In the predella, for example, in the figure of the theological Virtue of Charity is already felt the knowledge of the vault of the Sistine Chapel by Michelangelo and so it is unlikely that it has been painted before 1508-9. Not to mention, then, the God Father which overhung the center table, that could be linked even to a precocious direct knowledge of roman models. But the fact remains that, if Raphael has affixed the 1507 date to the singular painting, he did it for exact reasons. And these reasons are to be found.
The Transportation, often cited as the Deposition, it's a kind of a very complex figurative machine and elaborated with exemplary precision. The preliminary study, done in pen and ink on stylus and black chalk traces, is the one of the Graphic Arts Department of Louvre (inv. 3865) that contains an admirable composition of figures, where the body of Christ lies on the ground and above it takes place the fainting of the Virgin, while the figure of St. John is the only one standing and closes the composition on the right filling the full height of the space. Then, the other fundamental study is the one in pen, dusky ink and traces of black pencil at the Cabinet of Drawings and Prints of Uffizi (inv. 538E). Here, instead, the idea is of a group of carriers the stature of which completely fills the height of the paper that they raised the body and bring it on the sheet balancing from side to side, while the Magdalene leans over the body of Christ in the supreme act of compassion.
The final result is a completely new and unprecedented painting in the entire western tradition which combines various assumptions but at the same time outclasses them all.
The alignment of the heads emphasizes the landscape opening, in which appear to overlap the figurative ideas stemming from the world of Pintoricchio and Perugino, from the Venetian one and from the one of Leonardo. Supreme principle, which coordinates the whole composition, is the absolute and almost ghostly luminousness that the master had put in place in the Ansidei Altarpiece which had accompanied him in the many works of the two previous years. The poetics of glance, on which he had implanted the delicate poetics of the great Florentine Madonnas, here is completely surpassed. It is there, of course, but the methodology is completely new. In the phenomenal group of the three heads of the characters on the left you can already see the work accomplished by the master in conceiving this kind of circumnavigation of the human soul put into effect within the painting. The crying of the Magdalene is presented with some sort of sharpening of the form as if she was the symbol of the figurative heritage, that Raphael transports back from his recent past, and the same theme of the transportation was lowered as metaphor in the imaging system designed by Raphael.
The body of Christ is depicted with a masterly idea of the overdriven and blessed relaxation that cannot compete with the fate of the Redeemer of Mankind, but the weight and effort remain deposited in the painting with an absolute evidence. The color range is purified in all images from any suspicion of densification and darkness. The shadow, when is there, is transparent, nothing is encumbered by darkness. Descends like a blessing on the images an eternal spring of art and thought, while the group of pious women is truly carved in the pictorial fabric, and Raphael finds the language of the admirable Madonnas of shortly before re-fused in the harshness of a sweet matter constructed in the irony cage of the drawing.
It is interesting the problem of the proportions and the relationship between the figure and the landscape. Observing well, in fact, the group of the pious women wants to be altogether a little smaller than the one of the figures in the foreground, but the eye does not comfortably measure the difference, while the distant landscape is all held on the same level of evidence and sharpness. The composition flows from left to right according to the natural order of western writing and Raphael doses with pinpoint accuracy the the passing of lights from one figure to another, and is more compact and unitary in the pious women than the rest. He wants, namely, to insert in the painting, through the dosage of lights, an authentic narrative element, forcing the viewer to a recognition that of necessity perceives the left side as the beginning of the composition and the right side as the end, that consolidates the obtained results.

IN MILAN:
the Sforza's Court
In 1482 Leonardo arrives in Milan, the capital, after Florence and together with other centers like Rome and Venice, of the renaissance civilization. In the opulent and ambitious court of Ludovico Sforza, known as il Moro, he comes with a recommendation of Lorenzo the Magnificent and preceded by a letter he dictated in which he boasted, or rather he pointed out, we would say today, ex post in front of the mole of his creations, his artistic and especially technical skills (perhaps even aware that in that industrious city there were more opportunities in the fields of applied art than Florence, where dominated the spirituality and intellectualism of the neoplatonic academy of the Medici), serving not only as a painter, sculptor, architect and even musician, but notably as senior engineer experienced in several sectors, from mechanics to hydraulics, as well as an inventor of military equipment and designer of scenic equipment and devices for shows and parties.
Thanks to his close friendship with Donato Bramante (together they are designing the spire of the Dome) and with Luca Pacioli (of whom he explains the treaty De divina proportione), Leonardo hones his knowledge in architecture and mathematics, as well as in all the various fields of knowledge, studies that flow into the Codex Atlanticus, now preserved in Milan, while, aside from notable exceptions such as the Cenacle, the Virgin of the rocks and some portraits, not many works performed in the almost twenty years of his stay in Milan (of one of them, the decoration of the Sala delle Asse at the Castello Sforzesco, remain only a few, albeit precious, tracks with vegetal motifs – currently is undergoing a restoration that reveals interesting newnesses, including also unknown autograph pieces).
One of the major works would have to be the great equestrian monument in honour of Francesco Sforza, inter alia, one of the reasons for the coming of the artist to the court of Moro, considered that he had thereby written that finally "we could will perform the work of the bronze horse, which will be immortal glory and eternal honor of the memory of the Lord your father and of the illustrious Sforza family". Although it had kept Leonardo busy for at least a decade, this work, of colossal size being over seven metres high and weighing 700 quintals, was never made, even for the political vicissitudes of the commissioner. Of it we are left with only ideas on the melting process (it should have been merged, turned upside down, in a huge pit) and preparatory drawings, which show us various solutions (a horse walking or rampant over a soldier), because even the terracotta model, exposed in 1493 in preview at the party for the wedding of Bianca Maria Sforza, was destroyed by the french troops of Louis XII more or less on the same days in which Leonardo abandoned the city, bringing with himself his own manuscripts.

THE WONDERS
OF THE CODEX
ATLANTICUS
The Codex Atlanticus (Milan, Ambrosiana Library, Room of the Treasury) began its individual existence in the penultimate decade of the sixteenth century, when Pompeo Leoni assembled in one volume about 400 sheets of Leonardo's drawings and writings of different topic, extension and dating, entitling them "drawings of machines and arts, secrets and other things of Leonardo da Vinci collected by Pompeo Leoni". In this codex, which took its name from the large format, exactly as an atlas, that distinguished it (is the most voluminous and ample of the da Vinci’s codexes), Leoni glued sheets and leaflets, some of which, when they were written on both sides, were attached only by the edges. To Leoni the material had arrived after that Francesco Melzi, heir of paintings, manuscripts and instruments of Leonardo, had transferred it to his villa in Vaprio d'Adda, near Milan. At Leoni's death in 1610 the codex passed to Polidoro Calchi, who sold it to the marquis Arconati, who in 1637 donated it to the Ambrosiana Library, where it remained until 1796, when it was confiscated and transported to the National Library in Paris by Napoleon's troops, and returning to Milan in 1815 after the fall of Bonaparte, however risking to end up elsewhere as the left hand writing by Leonardo was mistaken for chinese and Canova had to intervene to direct things the right way.
Originally on the about 400 sheets of the codex (with a 64.5 x 43.5 cm format) were positioned about 1,750 cards, then, with the subsequent revisions and amendments, we arrive to the current 1,119 sheets for a total of 1,286 cards, distributed in 12 volumes after the restoration of the 1962-1970 (lately the codex has been disassembled in order to facilitate the expository fruition).
Many and varied are the themes dealt with, although there is a certain prevalence of scientific and technical topics, partly because of the history of many sheets, dateable to the master’s first stay in Milan. They range from math to astronomy, from botany to anatomy, from civil engineering to the military one, from physics to optics and geography, and there are studies for the urban renewal of Milan, the sketches for works such as the Adoration of the Magi and the Battle of Anghiari, the caricatural sketches. as well as thoughts and various compositions. Countless projects, including, just to name a few examples: water lifting pumps intended for the construction of locks (the "Archimedes' screws"); contraptions of war like a wheel with four crossbows or the mortars with a mechanism to adjust the range, with balls that after launching open to free other balls; weight-lifting machines with a horizontal shaft and toothed wheels; automatic rotisseries moved by hot air; surgical instruments, like a retractor or a saw with a particular shape. And then burning mirrors, machine tools, cutting machines, excavators, winches, spinning wheels, mechanical drums, linchpins, underwater breathing equipment, parachutes and even a prototype of automobile.

Segnatura means signing and until recently it was thought that the Stanza della Segnatura was some sort of Papal office intended for the signature of Papal decrees and other similar practices. But further research showed that this Room was actually a library, separate from the great Vatican Library but of more strictly personal use for the Pope, and it is reasonable to think that it contained a selection of legal-administrative texts justifying a function between the public and the private character of the environment. Sure that the sapiential tone of the decorations reminds of a place intended for the performance of duties of utmost importance in the political and personal life of the Pontiff. Vasari reports that when the Pope realized the validity of the project, however stretched out under his own responsibility, as attested by Paolo Giovio, and the early Raphaelesque accomplishments, he sent home the other painters and entrusted to Raphael the whole enterprise. On the two window jambs of the Hall is inscribed the date 1511, eighth of the pontificate of Pope Julius II, which should be the date of the completion of the work.
In truth, in the Room something of the interventions previous to Raphael remains, because the four illusionistic arches that frame the four great Raphaelite scenes are decorated according to a system that appears antecedent to the master from Urbino and the structure of vault above seems due to the project of Sodoma. However, the key issue is which one is the first fresco executed by Raphael in the Room, because Vasari claims that it was The School of Athens, while exists and has been followed very much a theory of Bellori, formulated at the end of the 17th century, according to which the first fresco would be the so-called Dispute over the SS. Sacrament, where you see a gold background residue remembering Pintoricchio and the general approach follows more archaic patterns and better connects to the last period of Raphael in Florence.
In any case, it should be noted that logic would dictate that the painter before the parietal frescoes had begun working on the vault at a crucial moment, in which Raphael becomes the par excellence humanist painter and confirms the linguistic evolution attained in the Borghese Transportation.

SCULPTOR
You don’t overdo it when stating that Michelangelo Buonarroti (1475-1564) is the greatest artist of all time, because with his works, which he designed and created in splendid solitude (did not tolerate aids, and when he requested them, dismissed them right away) and between torments and creative enthusiasm, the beautiful arts, namely sculpture and painting, attained heights nevermore reached regarding formal qualities and spiritual content, for representative intensity and emotional appeal, for suggestions of human nature and feeling. With him the Renaissance arrives in art at its apex, so that with his death criticism does often decree its end, because it closes an era dominated by the individual who, relying on his strength, wants to know and rule reality, and it’s the same thing that this is the world (as happens for the philosopher and the scientist), society (for the politician) or the matter (for the artist).
In hindsight, Michelangelo, whom the father Lodovico wanted man of letters or of law, felt sincerely and inexorably sculptor, more than painter, and with certain exceptions (and what exceptions if you drop your eye on the Sistine Chapel, or rather if the eye turns upwards and ahead of it going in), you can't blame him, because it is in the titanic struggle with a block of marble that the artist expressed the most from his shaper fury, he could give life with his own hands – novel demiurge – to new creatures, released by chisel from the matter that contained them and corresponding to the idea that, in the name of neo-platonic philosophy of which was soaked in the Florentine Court of Lorenzo the Magnificent, his enlightened patron, resided in the mind of the artifex and that he had a first translation into the drawing, essential passage point to the birth of the artwork and instrument that the Buonarroti mastered like few others.

The David and other masterpieces
The fame procured to him by his roman artworks opens to him the doors of Florence, for whose vertices, represented by the Gonfalonier Piero Soderini, delivers what is perhaps his tout court masterpiece, whenever possible to do a ranking among such a constellation of masterpieces: the David. In September 1501 Michelangelo begins to feverishly carve that huge block of Carrara marble which had previously been rough-hewed with no avail by other sculptors (Agostino di Duccio in 1462 and Antonio Rossellino in 1476) and which, as he apparently confessed to his friend Francesco Granacci, he long aspired to be able to model. After more than two years of inspired and secret work (for him art is a challenge between the artist and the matter to which nobody else should participate) from the boulder comes out a gleaming colossus which, in the place of the traditional teenager winning over Goliath using his cunning, depicts a young man in the prime of his physical strength, with athletic musculature and a scowling glance which reveals a scratch-resistant pride and a relentless determination. The statue is so fascinating for both the Florentines and a specially formed commission (also composed by great artists like Botticelli, Perugino, Ghirlandaio, Filippino Lippi, Giuliano da Sangallo, Filippino Lippi and maybe Leonardo da Vinci himself, with which perhaps it seems there was bad blood) that is decided, with the consent of the author, to put it not in the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, as was preestimated, but at the entrance of the Palazzo Vecchio in the Piazza della Signoria, as a symbol of the political and cultural power of the Republic (since 1873 the David is housed in the Gallery of the Academy, while a marble copy replaces it since 1910 in the square, adroitness that has not prevented it to be again the subject of vandalism – in 1991 its left toe was broken – after what during the anti-Medicea riots of 1527 provoked the amputation of an arm, thankfully jealously guarded by Vasari and reattached in 1543).
The Opera del Duomo still managed to obtain a work by Buonarroti, because if the David never entered in the Cathedral, the Saint Matthew resided here for a long time (until 1834, when it was moved to its current location in the Gallery of the Academy), although it is the only one of the twelve statues which the master was supposed to accomplish by contract. This sculpture is still unfinished, giving us the opportunity to appreciate the famous non-finished by Michelangelo, whose working method builds on rough-hewing the main side of the block, taking away via the matter "in excess" so that the figure emerges as if escaping from a prison. And by the name of Prisons are in fact known other sculptures by Michelangelo, as the four now kept in the Gallery of the Academy in Florence, wanted for his own mausoleum by Pope Julius II (with whom he shared the same sullen and obstinate character), an initially pharaonic assignment which was downsized from time to time and which lasted for about forty years unnerving the artist, who called it a "tragedy", however, managing to create another masterpiece like the Moses (Rome, St. Peter in Chains), an artwork, maybe processed in two stages, immediately admired for its plastic power and especially for its formidable realism, so much that it is said that the same author has flung the hammer on the statue because irritated by its silence.
Another Pope, Leo X, entrusted him with the construction of the façade of the Basilica of San Lorenzo in Florence and of the adjoining New Sacristy, with the tombs of Giuliano de' Medici, Duke of Nemours and Lorenzo de' Medici, Duke of Urbino, under which are placed in a reclined and apparently unstable position two pairs of sculptures: The Night and The Day, on one side, and The Dusk and The Dawn, on the other side, statues which, in addition to being painful allegories of the passing of time, show different surface processing modes, from a maximum smoothness to a light scabrousness, at certain points with non-finished sections, which causes variations in the lighting effects. In this respect it should be noted that the art of Michelangelo has its own evolution in relation to the processing of surfaces, starting with his early works that appear, in a general sense, smoother and more accurate, passing through those of the maturity, more grainy and rough, and ending with the last, almost untouched and left expressly unfinished, especially as to show that the shape is contained in the matter, modernly putting the expressive value before the representative figure, the interpretation before the imitation, the moral before the technique.
Each sculpture of Buonarroti has a formidable solidity and strength, and is characterized by the intensity of the movement and the troubled relief, often with lyrical inflections. All are memorable, but here we recall, following a rough chronological order, the Virgin with Child and the infant St John, known as “Tondo Pitti” (Florence, Bargello National Museum), unfinished-looking and destined to a private meditation given its intimate tone, the Risen Christ (Rome, Santa Maria sopra Minerva), which is actually a second version by the artist as the first version (perhaps the one today in the Church of San Vincenzo Martire in Bassano Romano) was scrapped due to a black grain in the block of marble, the Genius of Victory (Florence, Palazzo Vecchio), one of the first examples of serpentine figure, hinged on opposing, which Daniele da Volterra unsuccessfully proposed as ornament of the tomb of Michelangelo, the Brute (Florence, Bargello National Museum), an autograph bust in the head rather than in the drapery, and the Apollo-David, iconographic duplicity reflecting the first idea of depicting the victorious young shepherd who tramples the severed head of Goliath, and the subsequent choice, perhaps influenced by a change of destination or of the commissioner, to eternize the god of beauty, with a sketched sun, his attribute, under his foot. To be mentioned three "Pieties" of the extreme years: the Deposition (Pietà Bandini) of the Museo of the Opera of the Dome of Florence, which the artist had originally thought for his own funerary monument, much to portray himself in Nicodemus, the Piety of Palestrina in the Gallery of the Academy in Florence, and the harrowing (and amazing) Rondanini Piety of the Museum of Ancient Art of the Castello Sforzesco in Milan, surely the marble that had the honour of receiving the last stroke of the master's chisel, non-finished artwork as non-finished was human existence for him.

towards the Room of Heliodorus
The Room of Heliodorus is the apotheosis of Raphael's career and also, to a certain extent, its collapse. The Raphaelesque project, consisting of some sort of "photography" of the cultural and social reality, in which he was immersed, projected in an allegorical and philosophical dimension, but nurtured by a sense of throbbing quotidianity, touched its peak in this masterpiece. The scene of the Liberation of St Peter is a marvel of light weaving. The supreme invention of the lattice, behind which there are the figures, is already, by itself, a stunning acquisition to the art of painting in general and introduces the theme of the night and the dazzling light in direct contrast with a strength and a quality that only Caravaggio, almost one hundred years later, will be able to resume and develop.
The Mass at Bolsena is a more authentic miracle of art with such inner life of the images that rarely had reached such an intensity, while the Expulsion of Heliodorus from the temple engages a political, ideological and aesthetic significance that make this fresco one of the artworks of most arduous understanding of the whole history of western art. The last scene, the Meeting of Leo the Great and Attila, in fact, already poses some questions, leaving puzzled even its contemporaries. You don't see anymore that outstanding strength and poignancy of Raphael's hand, but it's obvious a lowering of quality that connects directly with the other fresco of the Battle of Ostia, in the next Room of the Fire in the Village, accomplished between 1514 and 1515, where the just overshadowed trends in the Room of Heliodorus touch a culmination, beyond which the personality of Raphael painter will undergo such a definitive turning point to bring him to a remarkable decline.
The Room of Heliodorus was intended for Papal audiences and, in fact, it was always noticed that the basic argument illustrated in this room is the direct intervention of God in history with a spirit that tempers the influence of the Jewish world with the Catholic one, in a perspective that came close to the one which would have brought Luther and Calvin to the Protestant Reformation. In the Room of Heliodorus the papacy deploys the essential points of the doctrine and is legitimate to argue that this is a room entirely ideological. Only that the insistence of the Curia was in the idea of the miracle, through which the divine presence is manifested in history, but the catholic miracle is an event that goes beyond the order, previously established by God himself, of events and history in general, while the protestant orientation was to expunge the need of miracles in confirmation of the divine will, whose miracle is everyday life and presence in the believer's life and no disruption of the natural order of things.

THE VILLA
AND THE GARDEN:
the architecture of Andrea Palladio and
the frescoes by Veronese
In treating the villas of Palladio, the opening towards the garden and the integration into the surrounding landscape are often taken for granted, without originating from a real reflection. In truth, most of his villas shows a clearly desired distortion of the relationship between the inside and the outside, typical of the era, and in particular of Mannerism. On this very important point, all the works of Palladio differ from the ideals of the Renaissance. For a humanistic renaissance villa, the enjoyment of the garden and the landscape was indeed one of the most important ideals. This is why the history of gardens always arouses particular interest and every era has its tales of gentlemen who surround their country houses with gardens and who derive pleasure from the surrounding landscape.
Already Boccaccio had represented in the Decameron gardens that surprisingly look like those of the Renaissance. But that portrayed is only the fictitious illusion of a heavenly ideal becomes clear at the latest at the end of the description, when peaceful animals appear, such as deers and roe deers, grazing meek in the garden, a nightmare for every gardener who knows the consequences. For this reason in the treaties on gardens there are always indications on the height of the boundary walls, which must be able to prevent the entry of wild animals in the garden.
It wasn't instead artistic fiction the garden of Petrarca, always mentioned in his letters and which for the poet, clearly less endowed as a gardener, was a real torment and delight. As virtuoso representative of medieval thought, he praises God and the perfection of his creation in the garden, which becomes the ideal place for this hymn. The care of the garden, and thereby of the divine creation, thus becomes a practiced form of celebration of religious services.
Even the monastic gardens should be interpreted in this sense. Completely different is the situation of the garden in the Renaissance and in the Baroque, where man is increasingly in the foreground and is his wit, rather than God's creation, to be the object of celebration. Man then finishes with getting lost in the modern hubris, according which the creation is unfinished and is himself to be called to complete it.
Another break, just as important, is the crisis of the modern era beginning in the 16th century: not only scientific discoveries deprived man of his centrality in the cosmos and then in the creation, but the links of the natural world were much more complicated than we originally thought. The Renaissance man, who believed to rule the world and who believed to be able to understand it just by looking at it, failed. While Leonardo da Vinci could still claim that what was being reproduced on the retina was the reality, now the world had become more complex, incomprehensible, sometimes even hostile. The garden, the ideal image of the world, had to reflect all this. Three were the possibilities in this regard: the garden could represent this conflict, as in the tuscan Bomarzo; or it could ignore it, how willingly did Mannerism in art, having as its goal the artificiality of the pomp of court and excluding any contact with nature; or, finally, the garden and landscape were renounced, since both were not an ideal anymore. It was this last variant to become rule: that there was hardly any need of gardens and landscapes is demonstrated by most of the villas in Veneto. As much as a book about the gardens of the villas is certainly interesting, a book about their absence in most of the villas would be even more compelling.
The few parks realized that were more than mere vegetable gardens, hence created only in order to satisfy the needs of the house, served mainly to accommodate the needs of court life. For this reason they were created only for those villas which had special representative requirements, namely for real maisons de plaisance. The venetian prototype in this sense is the garden of the villa of Caterina Cornaro, Queen of Cyprus, in Altivole at Asolo.

PAINTER
Who expected that the one who was so skilled with a chisel to create works like the David, the Moses or the Piety, couldn't be the same with the paint brush, can look at the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican Palaces and should immediately change his mind. Michelangelo's frescoes of the Vault (1508-1512) and the wall of the altar with the Last Judgement (1536-1541) make up such an artistic miracle to leave blown away, especially if we bear in mind that we owe to one man (the collaborators were soon exempted, by resorting to gossoons only for minor tasks like the preparation of colours), from the ideation to the cartoons drawing and the fresco drafting, working, in the case of the Vault, suspended 20 meters above the ground over a special scaffolding attached to the side walls, lying, by candlelight, so much to jeopardize his health with even long-term musculo-skeletal consequences, for the inconvenience of the posture assumed for too long, and his eyes, for the dripping of paint and probably for the protracted effort to focus large hatches at close range. In addition it was an undertaking that the artist agreed reluctantly, because it is known how he did not feel painter ("that is not my profession", he wrote to his father shortly after starting the job), and then we must thank the stubbornness and maybe the foresight of Pope Julius II della Rovere, who basically imposed him the decoration of the vault by suspending the construction of his own magnificent mausoleum, about which instead Buonarroti really cared (he even travelled to Carrara to choose the marbles), and of Paolo III Farnese, who urged the Judgment after the artist felt exempt from the office following the death of the previous Pope, Clement VII, who had commissioned it to him.
Also in the Sistine Chapel the human body, represented in various movements and attitudes, is the star performer, as is typical of Michelangelo (the disinterest for landscape details catches your eye by browsing his catalog) and as pointed out by the biographer Condivi, according to whom he "expressed all that of a human body the art of painting can do, not leaving behind any act, or any motion". Similarly, the sculptural hand of the artist stands out, so much that we can assert that his painting is nothing more than the flat and colored translation of his sculpture. Among other things, about the dispute over the primacy between sculpture and painting, he had stated that "painting seems more held good, the more it goes towards the relief, and the more the relief is held bad, the more it approaches painting", so that we can understand how these frescoes are mostly – but therein lies their inimitable style, the mark of a genius – compositions of statuary bodies carried out pictorially.

from the cartoons for the Sistine Chapel
to the room of the Fire of the Village
The presence of Raphael in the Sistine Chapel has remained forever latent, but was relevant and to a certain extent decisive for his entire career. Raphael's entry into that space, dominated to the extreme by the figure of Michelangelo Buonarroti, takes place in 1514 when Bramante dies. This is a crucial issue. Bramante's influence on Raphael had to be enormous on both theoretical and practical level. It seems certain that Raphael has obtained the assignment of the Vatican Rooms via Bramante, who protected him and certainly favoured his meeting with the supreme circle dominating the Curia, that group of initiates who found in Raphael their artistic par excellence exponent. If you accept that the Stanza della Segnatura is a sort of "portrait" of an elitist and self-referential social environment, so as it appeared to Erasmus of Rotterdam on a visit to Rome in those years, you should also recognize that the influence of Bramante on the development of the large architectural spaces painted in the Segnatura should be noted with respect to Raphael’s planning quality, found in the Marriage of the Virgin at Brera, even in the comparisons with Perugino’s and Pintoricchio’s models, evident for Raphael, from the same Sistine Chapel, where the Delivery of the Keys by Perugino remained an incontrovertible prototype, at the Bufalini Chapel in St. Maria in Ara Coeli by Pintoricchio, other exemplary model of rational expansion of the spaces and majesty of the setting.
But it is equally clear that there is a radical transition between the spatiality of a masterpiece as the Marriage of the Virgin in Brera and the spatiality set up by Raphael in the School of Athens. Here was always recognized a strong echo of Bramante’s project for the new S. Peter in the temple that seems to unite the two celestial and terrestrial natures. Although the technical verification is not possible, the fascination remains evident and there is no doubt that some kind of proportional average between a conception which is the one reflected in the Marriage of the Virgin and a conception which is the one reflected in the School of Athens and in the so-called Ideal city of Urbino, one of the most enigmatic paintings in the history of italian art, but undoubtedly crucial for the conception of the mature Raphael.
The Ideal city is connected with Raphael just for the fact of being in Urbino, the birthplace of the painter. Since we do not know the external story of this supreme painting, you can't push the analysis over. You can however make some side comments that help to understand the decisive turning point in Raphael's career, immediately after the death of Bramante. There, is no doubt, in fact, that exists a Raphael who pursues certain purposes during the life of Bramante and a different Raphael after the death of the great architect. Now, the only thing that can be said with certainty is that, after a year or so after the death of Bramante followed by a trail of endless controversies about the behaviors of this quite unique character, praised and deplored with equal energy by opposing factions, Raphael receives from Pope Leo X the appointment as prefect, as conservator of Roman Antiquities, following which the master will prepare a famous letter to the Pope that contains the guidance and reflections aimed at the protection of Fine Arts, so that it is legitimate to consider Raphael the first Superintendent of Antiquities. How concretely Raphael has exercised that function over the last five years that he had left to live, it is very difficult to say. But it is clear that his conception of the old city dropped in the frescoes, painted between 1509 and 1514, would bring him on Bramante’s way, appropriately corrected from those controversies, whereby Bramante was repeatedly accused of starting the demolition of the old and, right from these complaints, arose the assignment to Raphael, on one hand, ideal apprentice of Bramante, but, on the other hand, autonomous and profound expert of ancient things. It is now evident that the figurative conception, reflected in so-called Ideal city of Urbino, is very close to the reading made by Raphael on Bramantesque ideas and that took shape in the Stanza della Segnatura. But it was always noted as the figurative and architectural conception of the ideal city of Urbino was very close to the ideas expressed by Piero della Francesca, both specifically about his work at the court of Urbino, of which is supreme testimony the Brera Altarpiece, and in his theoretical work culminated in his treatise De perspectiva pingendi, whose publication coincided with the early years of study of Raphael. The question inherent in the Ideal city of Urbino was, however, always complicated by the fact that nothing is known about the commissioner, the author's origin and the function of the mirable painting. You feel an aura of Piero della Francesca, it even comes close to Francesco di Giorgio Martini until you get to imagine what author was Bramante himself who, actually, was also a painter of great value. But the comparison between the pictorial artworks more reliably linked to Bramante and the Ideal city of Urbino has never convinced the most aware exegetes nor never could be explained to the bottom what such an artwork was useful for, which apparently doesn't have a subject (thing at the limits of the inconceivable for the renaissance mentality), has a very large size to assume a use as mere household furniture and denotes a very high quality attributable only to a sublime hand. It remains, however, rather convincing the setting of the artwork in a Piero della Francesca styled area. There you feel a kind of draft that, mutatis mutandis, we find in Fra' Carnevale, in Bartolomeo della Gatta, in Lorenzo da Viterbo, in Piermatteo d'Amelia. But all this does not even help to frame with certainty the dating of the work. With equal plausibility it may be placed in the seventies, eighties or nineties of the 15th century, because there is no crucial element of dating that resolves any doubts. However, the reading in a highly Piero della Francesca key leads to Raphael, because Raphael certainly saw in Rome, in the area of the Stanze, the fresco which Piero della Francesca had created there and which he demolished or covered.

Superintendent of Fine Arts
In 1516 Cardinal Giulio de' Medici commissioned to Raphael a gigantic altarpiece with the subject of the Transfiguration to be destined to the Cathedral of Narbonne in France, of which he had obtained the ownership. It is a prestigious commission, for which Raphael was compared with Sebastiano del Piombo, to which the cardinal ordered the Resurrection of Lazarus, now at the National Gallery in London. Sebastiano had to have clear in mind the stylistic and compositional breakthrough conducted by Raphael in the series of Cartoons for the Sistine Chapel and took possession of the idea inherent to the figure of Christ, as protagonist of ancient tragedy, in terms similar to those conceived by Raphael for the tapestries with the stories of the Princes of the Apostles. The ancients spoke of a real "competition" between Raphael and Sebastiano, but there is no clear evidence of this. We only know that Raphael and Sebastiano accomplished the requested artworks, but neither of the two came to the Cathedral of Narbonne. The Transfiguration was exposed, however, next to Raphael's deathbed at the time of the passing of the master in 1520. It is not known if Raphael started to work immediately. Usually we tend to consider the Transfiguration as Raphael's last work, but there is no certain proof. Without a doubt, is to frame within the Francophile policy that Pope Leo X was leading with enormous commitment and energy expenditure as early as the time of the assignment to Raphael as prefect of Antiquities. In fact, between 1516 and 1518, Raphael's interventions are frequent in order to meet needs of representation and cultural relations woven by the Pontiff and other characters of the Curia, as indeed Giulio de' Medici with the french monarchy. But for now the attention of the master from Urbino was concentrated on cardinal Dovizi da Bibbiena, who had entrusted him with a new and unique venture undoubtedly worthy of the new task of the master from Urbino. Cardinal Dovizi da Bibbiena had become one of the most influential patrons of the master and wanted to fully include him into his family, giving him his niece Mary as wife. The marriage did not take place, but Raphael worked for the mansion of the cardinal, making decorate in new and surprising shapes the exterior loggetta (small lodge) and the Stufetta, an environment intended for ablutions, copied from the model of ancient baths. The decorations in stuccos and frescos of the Stufetta and of the Lodge are preserved, although in poor condition, and represent perhaps Raphael's first attempt to put to good use in a personal and unique manner the experience that he was conducting as Superintendent of Antiquities.
The question deserves the greatest attention, because it allows to frame with clarity a number of initiatives, undertaken or conducted by Raphael in the last four years of his life. In essence, the Pope asked Raphael to chart a new and scientific map of ancient Rome, preserving its monuments and recovering its meaning, even compared to the incumbent institutional survival issues of the papacy itself, threatened as maybe never had happened before and as would have happened a few months later with the onset of the Protestant Reformation. Some eminent personalities of the Curia, such as the cardinal Dovizi da Bibbiena, the papal banker Agostino Chigi, the cardinals Giulio de' Medici and Lorenzo de' Rossi, Marino Branconio dell'Aquila, cardinal Alessandro Farnese, pushed in order that the Papal Curia would be radically secularized and would be completed that process of reform that Julius II had introduced, in order to emancipate the Papal power from the increasingly insidious influences of the Capitoline secular authority in Rome, whose gradual expansion could slow down, if not annihilate, the spheres of influence of the papacy and weaken beyond bearable limits its finances.
Dovizi da Bibbiena was one of the men with whom Raphael had entered in the most profound harmony and he was the initiator of an artistic trend line that would have culminated, in very little time, in the catastrophic enterprise of the Vatican Lodges. Raphael, at that moment holder of the cultural power in the city of Rome, is being asked to prepare for Cardinal Dovizi da Bibbiena a classical reenactment environment, and Raphael is able to guide his school in the direction of the study and remanufacture of the classical architectural and sculptural heritage which, basing on papal provisions, should not be demolished and treated as a building material, but it must be resurrected with the blessings of a philology able to become true instrument of power in the hands of those who, alone, are able to gain from those memories.
Raphael conceives the framing of the set and gives the method of execution. Basically, the simple and short idea, upon which it is based, is the resurrection of the ancient, integrally philological, but treated with freedom from the point of view of style. Indeed, Raphael's pupils are encouraged to implement the absolute spontaneity of their hand, adopting a philologically unreliable but artistically suggestive hypothesis, whereby ancient painting, the one of the Domus Aurea in particular, is revived and reformulated on the basis of a naturalistic principle, which is not mere imitation of reality, but fantastic reconstruction of past history with the criterion of remembrance according to a narrative and fantastic perspective . In the Stufetta (Tiny Bathing Chamber), Raphael gets to work Giulio Pippi, named Giulio Romano, Giovanni da Udine and Giovan Francesco Penni. Their style is similar and marked by a naïve and almost crude sense, taken by an immature and amused youth that reassembles the Ancient, by scrupulously copying the perspective framings, the grotesque, the decorations and the emblems, but then reinventing it in the narrative parts, as if the past would come to us in the form of dream and enigma.

THE VATICAN
LODGES
Agostino Chigi, the great renaissance patron and friend of Raphael, married the venetian Francesca Ordeaschi on 28 August 1519. Raphael had provided all the frescoes in the large hall of the Lodge, where presumably was held the wedding ceremony officiated by Pope Leo X in person, who, on this occasion, went to the villa of Agostino. In a letter, written in January 1519 by Leonardo Sellaio to Michelangelo Buonarroti, it is said that the frescoes in the Lodge were already finished, so it is permissible to date the work within 1518, the year when Raphael carries out a substantial and fruitful activity as painter for the Pope and the year in which he prepares the letter about archeology which will be drafted later. It is possible, however, that the letter would have been ready for the wedding day, as evidence of the commitment of the master from Urbino in support of any cultural policy of the Pope, unrestricted to only pictorial assignments.
Meanwhile, the students of Raphael worked at the third Vatican lodge with the frescoes of the stories of the Genesis, presumably out of the direct control of the master. The work in the Vatican Lodges was supposed to be ready in June 1519 slightly earlier than the wedding of Chigi. It is known from a letter by Baldassare Castiglione to Isabella d'Este. The great intellectual writes to the noblewoman on 16 June and reports that the enormous decoration is accomplished. It is likely, then, that Raphael also worked simultaneously on another artwork intended for his friend Branconio dell'Aquila, whom he will quote in his will. It is the Altarpiece of the Visitation, signed, not dated and destined to the Church of San Silvestro in L'Aquila, a fine and delicate artwork, that even though it bears the signature of the master from Urbino, it was considered by most exegetes as product of the workshop.
But, basically, the problem of the workshop concerns all the activity of the master in 1519, so much that it almost seems that Raphael’s hand is no longer traceable in any work bearing his name, being so many and such the discrepancies and the differences between an artwork and the other as to suggest that the master had completely left out the task of pictorial performer in order to devote himself only to the beloved activity of architect and all-around contributor of the cultural policy of the Papacy, emerging among other things on that fateful year an even new perspective but, perhaps, very interesting for the master from Urbino, the one as fitter of shows. We know from dispatches by officials of the Court of Ferrara in Rome, attentive to the evolution of the preparation of the Triumph of Bacchus (which, perhaps, Raphael never began), that the master, in the month of March 1519, had worked on the scenographies of the comedy by Ludovico Ariosto I Suppositi, represented within the Curia at the very moment when Raphael develops the studies for the villa of Giulio de' Medici, which will be then called Villa Madama, on Monte Mario as emblem of the happy newfound classicism. Is that final and coveted outcome that would serve as a prototype for a renewal all in ancient key of the roman life associated with the activities of the Curia, despite being increasingly secularized by the Lutheran rebuttals always more incisive and thumping, since the augustinian monk had disseminated the theses of Wittemberg, gathering the adhesion of several german princes, who were beginning to organise themselves into a real political movement, of which Raphael could not, however, see the decisive developments that would have taken place in the decade following his death.
What matters maximally is the maturation of Raphael in the classical direction, just when a frightful crisis involves the Curia and, inevitably, all the personalities who gravitated around it. Both the Vatican Lodges, in fact, and the Lodge of Agostino Chigi are designed with an optics of high philology which, until then, had been excluded from the painters' creative horizons. Without a doubt Raphael had a great precedent in Pintoricchio and his school, which has the merit of the exhumation of the ancient grotesque and the invention of an iconographic system in which the reviving of decorative equipment and iconographies of classicism occupies a central role in the modern creation.
But in Pintoricchio and his pupils technical research is relatively absent. In contrast, in Raphael the philological meaning takes over the immediate appearance of the images and becomes the criterion unifying a gigantic work of research and creation, on which will be based on the birth of not only a new art but of a new concept of art itself, where the ancient and the modern coexist in a unquenchable "race" of emulation.
Raphael in those years studies, therefore, on the archaeological map of Rome and examines specifically the antiquities, which he evaluates and analyzes surrounded by a school in which wits of exceptional acumen are forming. Raphael studies the ancient from the technical-executive point of view. Giovanni da Udine, his worthy disciple, is, for example, the first to investigate and retrieve the white stucco of the ancients, as indeed Vasari tells comprehensively, inventing the system of mixing to the mortar of white travertine the shredded white marble, as did the ancients with results of shocking beauty in the modeling of the figures and in the exaltation of the softness of the skin.
This rediscovery extended, moreover, to the entire pictorial and sculptural system inspired by the ancient and, indeed, the Hall of Constantine in the Vatican, performed by the students after the demise of the master and a fierce battle for the maintenance of the commission, is the most concrete evidence of this attitude. In that wonderful, and together problematic hall, true cornerstone of the origin of a new modern art, is already fully expressed the revolution conceived by Raphael for the regeneration of all the arts, which he was formulating through the articulation of the school for how he was elaborating it in the last two years of his life. Raphael's idea was to divide the tasks into a unitary group, controlled by a single programming mind.

“Ho da dirti una cosa importante Tra un’ora in Piazza !”.
Ai tempi, ohimè quanto remoti, della mia adolescenza, Piazza
San Marco, l’unica di Venezia a chiamarsi piazza e non campo,
per molti di noi era più casa che casa. Era in Piazza che ci si
confidavano i segreti, sciocchi o importanti che fossero. Era in
Piazza che nascevano e si coltivavano affinità e ostilità elettive nel
rito pomeridiano del cosiddetto liston, storico equivalente dello
“struscio” meridionale, dove fra ragazzi e ragazze il linguaggio
era soltanto quello degli occhi. La Banda municipale, un tempo
celebre (Richard Wagner, che sedeva spesso ai tavolini del Caffè
Lavena, non disdegnava, pregato, di dirigerla nell’esecuzione
di suoi pezzi celebri, come “L’entrata degli Dei nel Walhalla”)
forniva la colonna sonora dello spettacolo festivo, il passeggio
domenicale e la folla dei frequentatori, turisti e stanziali, dei
caffè dove approdavano dame di gran lignaggio come la famosa
contessa Morosini dagli immensi cappelli e dalla stridula
altissima voce “ancien régime”.
Per me, Piazza San Marco è stata stanza da gioco e teatro delle
sorprese, con i miei compagni di terza elementare ci ho giocato
ai cavalli in barba ai vigili urbani impegnati a impedirci di
far capitombolare i passanti sulle corde che facevano da
redini. In Piazza ho potuto vedere Charlie Chaplin portato in
trionfo a spalle dai gondolieri, e Mary Pickford, la “fidanzata
d’America”, al Caffè Florian con l’inseparabile bellone Douglas
Fairbanks. E, al balcone della cosiddetta ala napoleonica,
Benito Mussolini che arringava la folla additando agli applausi
un Adolf Hitler vestito di un impermeabilino frusto, e, là dove
due volte all’anno, l’anniversario dello Statuto e il genetliaco
del Re, si svolgeva la parata della guarnigione, le evoluzioni
a suon di cornamuse degli Highlanders scozzesi, appendice
folcloristica delle armate alleate.
La Piazza, ci dicono le guide, è di forma trapezoidale, lunga
metri 175,70 e larga 82 all’altezza della facciata della basilica
e 57 sul lato opposto. Ma le dimensioni e la monumentalità
degli edifici che la contornano non le hanno tolto la vocazione
all’intimità, il carattere di salotto affermato da Napoleone
Bonaparte, unica notazione estetica dell’onnipotente emperereur
nell’unica sua visita alla città che a lui, così disordinata com’era,
non diceva gran che: “Un salotto al quale si addice il cielo come
soffitto”. Entrarci, soprattutto dal lato opposto alla basilica,
dà sempre una sensazione particolare, di stordente meraviglia
e, come dire, di ritorno a casa. Non mi sembra possibile che
qualcun vi si possa sentire a disagio, anche oggidì che spesso è
invasa, del tutto o in parte, dall’acqua delle alte maree, e che un
turismo gaglioffo la maltratta; o, peggio che mai, la bistrattano
manifestazioni musicali simili a latrati, com’è l’usanza.
La Piazza non è nata con la forma e le dimensioni attuali.
Un’iscrizione sul pavimento ne segna il limite originario in
lunghezza, abbastanza modesto: la chiudeva un canale, il rio
Batario o Badovario, il cui nome richiama quello, Badoer, che
la tradizione attribuisce ad una delle prime dinastie dogali,
quella dei Partecipazi, o Parteciaci, al capostipite dei quali,
Agnello, spetterebbe il trasferimento della sede del duca,o
doge, da Malamocco, isola marginale della laguna verso
l’Adriatico. Correva l’anno 813 dopo Cristo. Il doge si sarebbe
insediato in quello che era un castello di probabile fabbrica
romana (altri vuole che l’abbia fatto costruire lui). Sarà suo
figlio Giustiniano a ricevere con tutti gli onori, l’anno 828,
il corpo dell’Evangelista San Marco, trafugato ad Alessandria
d’Egitto da due mercanti veneziani: come si può vedere nei
mosaici della facciata della basilica, fondata da Giustiniano
stesso per accogliere la preziosa reliquia.
Mercanti veneziani in Egitto... Nel testamento del duca
Giustiniano, redatto nell’anno 829, figura una voce che, per
i tempi, appare fuor del normale: vi si parla di capitali di cui
disporre “si salva de navigatione reversa fuerint”, se saranno ritornati
salvi dalla navigazione. Contro ogni consuetudine medioevale, il
nobile duca aveva dunque rischiato grossi capitali nel commercio
marittimo, senza che ciò intaccasse in alcun modo il suo prestigio.
È stato scritto che il dogato veneziano ha nobilitato la mercatura,
nella quale risulterà impegnata in un modo o nell’altro, per secoli,
gran parte della popolazione. Viene a proposito un’altra citazione
di Napoleone, la sola sua altra manifestazione d’interesse per la
regina del mare da lui detronizzata: “Questo paese è un fenomeno
della potenza del commercio”.

IL FASCINO DEL MOSAICO
L’impressione immediata che si prova entrando nella Basilica
di San Marco è lo stupore, tanto più intenso se si entra
all’imbrunire, quando si sono conclusi i riti sacri e, nel silenzio
mistico della sera, viene accesa l’illuminazione solenne di oltre
cinquecento lampade, appositamente studiate per illuminare,
con luce bianca che non altera i colori dei mosaici, lo splendido
scintillio del manto musivo.
Certamente l’architettura inconsueta, con il suo rincorrersi di
archi, di cupole e di volte, produce una suggestione affascinante,
ma è soprattutto lo splendore dei mosaici di oro zecchino, che
dalla luce ricevono riflessi e irradiano luci e colori, che colpisce
lo sguardo suscitando un ammirato stupore.
Un manto prodigioso di oltre ottomila metri quadrati di
superficie che sulle pareti dall’altezza di dodici metri si sviluppa
in uno sfavillante intreccio sopra i matronei, abbracciando
logge, pennacchi, arcate e le cinque splendide cupole che
rappresentano il costitutivo impianto architettonico di questa
basilica, giustamente chiamata la “Basilica d’oro”.
Furono all’inizio maestranze bizantine quelle che vennero
chiamate da Costantinopoli a Venezia per realizzare sul
modello della “madre di tutte le chiese”, come veniva chiamata
la costantinopolitana basilica di Santa Sofia, il complesso
architettonico della Basilica di San Marco, che si articola in
maniera sorprendentemente complessa, ma in realtà con una
purezza di linee che ne esaltano la perfezione. La Santa Sofia
di Costantinopoli, possente e massiccia, si erge sotto un’unica
immensa cupola; la Basilica di San Marco è stata costruita
con un preciso schema a cinque cupole, una centrale e le altre
quattro in corrispondenza dei quattro punti cardinali, sul
modello di un’altra grande basilica costantinopolitana ora
distrutta, l’Apostoleyon, la chiesa dei Dodici Apostoli.
Quattro grandi pilastri tetrapodi sorreggono la cupola centrale,
la più bella, in cui è raffigurato il mistero dell’Ascensione di Gesù
al cielo (la “Sensa”, come si dice in veneziano). E la “Sensa” fu
per secoli la grande festa della Serenissima Repubblica durante
la quale il doge si recava al porto di San Nicolò di Lido a bordo
della imbarcazione di rappresentanza, il “Bucintoro”, per
compiere il rito dello sposalizio del mare. Dai quattro pilastri
si diparte la teoria di archi e di volte su cui si innestano le altre
quattro cupole, determinando l’armonico sviluppo di spazi a
croce greca con il braccio trasversale, il transetto, che si incrocia
simmetricamente e in egual misura con quello longitudinale.
Come per l’architettura, furono mosaicisti bizantini che si
apprestarono a realizzare il manto musivo: già al tempo del
doge Domenico Selvo (1071-1084) la decorazione musiva
cominciava a risplendere nel suo iniziale fulgore.
Quando nel 1094 si celebrò la consacrazione della Basilica di
San Marco, detta “contariniana”, stante il munifico impegno
del doge Domenico Contarini che ne aveva iniziato la
costruzione nel 1064, il doge Vitale Falier poteva giustamente
andare orgoglioso per aver portato a termine un’opera fastosa
e splendida, che non aveva nulla da invidiare ai gioielli
architettonici del Corno d’oro di Bisanzio: lo scrigno per
custodire le spoglie dell’evangelista san Marco era perfettamente
riuscito.
LA TECNICA MUSIVA
Ci si chiederà perché i veneziani siano ricorsi alla tecnica
musiva per decorare San Marco, trascurando quella più in uso
in epoca medievale e di certo più economica dell’affresco. In
realtà non mancano lacerti di affresco, che furono scoperti
nel 1963 dal proto Ferdinando Forlati e successivamente nel
1977 dal proto Angelo Scattolin lungo il lato sud che agli inizi
doveva essere totalmente esterno, mentre nella prima metà del
XIV secolo venne incluso nell’aula del Battistero. Ma, com’è
noto, l’affresco è più facilmente deteriorabile del mosaico,
destinato a durare lungamente sfidando l’ingiuria del tempo. Il
destino degli affreschi fu quello di essere ricoperti dalle lastre
di marmo antico che a partire già dal 1159 maestro Pietro
cominciò a disporre lungo tutto il perimetro interno della
basilica. Il rivestimento marmoreo della parte inferiori delle
murature è un altro elemento splendido per la ricchezza dei
materiali e la ricercata cura nell’assemblare le grandi lastre di
marmo greco, il proconnesio, tagliate e accostate in modo da 86
creare dovunque un disegno simmetrico di svariate tonalità di
grigio, che lasciano immaginare una sorta di arazzo marezzato.
Il mosaico comunque rimane il lavoro più raffinato, non solo
per la vibrante intensità delle tinte ma anche per la stessa
tecnica, quanto mai impegnativa e preziosa. L’elemento base
è costituito da minute “tessere” o frammenti di “cogolo”, che
è il cuore del ciottolo di fiume. Opportunamente sfaccettato,
esso viene usato per realizzare le tinte chiare. Le tessere colorate
invece sono ritagliate da paste vitree, appositamente create nelle
fornaci di Murano con tecniche di antichissima tradizione che
riescono, con la fusione di speciali metalli, ad ottenere tinte
vivaci e particolarmente rare come il verde smeraldo, l’azzurro
lapislazzulo, il rosso rubino. Ma sono soprattutto le tessere
d’oro che rappresentano la più raffinata tecnica di lavoro:
su una superficie di pasta vitrea viene stesa una foglia d’oro
zecchino, che rimane imbrigliata dentro una sottile fodera
di vetro soffiato, detta “cartellina”, che assicura la perfetta
aderenza dell’oro al vetro. La varietà di carati della foglia d’oro
e la sua lavorazione all’interno dell’involucro di vetro diventa
nelle mani del mosaicista, che ne scolpisce le tessere, il manto
regale che ricopre ogni anfratto del soffitto della basilica.
Il mosaicista, con un’abilità sorprendente, deve collocare le
tessere sull’intonaco appositamente preparato, finché rimane
ancora tenero e plastico, seguendo un disegno da lui stesso
abbozzato (sinopia) sulla calce ancora umida. Sono del tutto
anonime le maestranze che lavorarono i mosaici dagli inizi fino
al XVI secolo, avvicendandosi sia all’esterno che all’interno
della Basilica. Il mosaico che per la sua struttura tecnica ha
una resistenza al degrado assai più durevole della pittura in
genere e dell’affresco in specie, nella città lagunare fin da
principio manifestò una sua fragile precarietà per cui, a motivo
della salsedine e dell’umidità dell’aria, si determinarono
rigonfiamenti e bolle nelle superfici musive, con conseguenti
cadute di tessere, quando non diffusi danneggiamenti di ampie
superfici. Tale fatto comportò che la Serenissima Repubblica
affidò a mosaicisti, all’origine bizantini, in seguito veneziani ma
anche ravennati, toscani e romani, il compito di ripristinare in
continuazione il mosaico che si staccava. Se all’inizio il lavoro
fu di meticoloso ripristino delle parti staccate, in seguito,
soprattutto a partire dal Cinquecento, il gusto artistico spinse a
ricostruire ex novo le parti staccate, facendo preparare i “cartoni”,
ossia le nuove scene, dai più celebri pittori di un’epoca che fu
il periodo d’oro della pittura veneziana. Tiziano, Tintoretto,
Veronese, solo per citare i maggiori, lasciarono la loro impronta
in quel lavoro che i mosaicisti, avendo ora indossato l’abito di
finissimi artigiani perdendo però quello di autentici artisti,
eseguirono realizzando nel mosaico le forme suggestive e le
iridescenti tinte della pittura, nel completo rifacimento delle
scene. I Procuratori di San Marco de supra, la magistratura
veneziana cui era affidata la cura della basilica, avevano
però imposto che, pur mutando la forma, i temi e i soggetti
rielaborati dovessero mantenere il loro significato originario.
Questo ha permesso che pur con forme mutate il messaggio dei
mosaici si mantenesse inalterato nel tempo.

"I have to tell you something important in the square in an hour!". At the time, alas how remote, of my teenage years, Saint Mark's square, Venice's unique square to be named square and not camp, for many of us it was more home than our home. It was in the square that you trusted telling secrets, foolish or important they were. It was in the square in which were arising and growing elective affinities and hostilities in the afternoon ritual of the so-called liston, historical equivalent of the Southern "swag", where between boys and girls the language was only the one of the eyes. The municipal Band, once famous (Richard Wagner, who often sat at the tables of the Café Lavena, didn't disdain, prayed, to direct it in the execution of his famous pieces, like "the entry of the Gods into Walhalla") provided the soundtrack of the show, the walking on Sundays and the crowd of frequenters, tourists and residents, of the cafes where dames of Grand lineage went alongside as the famous Countess Morosini with her immense high hats and shrill “ancien régime” voice.
For me, Piazza San Marco was the game room and theater of surprises, with my classmates in third grade I played with horses in defiance to police committed to prevent us to topple the passers-by on the ropes functioning as reins. In the square I could see Charlie Chaplin carried in triumph on the shoulders by gondoliers, and Mary Pickford, "America's sweetheart" at Caffè Florian with her inseparable heartthrob Douglas Fairbanks. And, on the balcony of the so-called Napoleonic wing, Benito Mussolini who harangued the crowd pointing to the applause a Adolf Hitler dressed in a tattered old raincoat, and, where twice a year, the anniversary of the Statute and the birthday of the King, took the garrison parade, with evolutions to the sound of bagpipes of Scottish Highlanders, the Allied armies folk appendage.
The square, the guides tell us, is trapezoidal, 175.70 meters long and 82 meters wide at the height of the facade of the basilica and 57 on the opposite side. But the size and monumentality of the buildings that surround it have not removed the vocation to intimacy, the character of parlour as said by Napoleon Bonaparte, unique aesthetic of the Almighty emperereur notation in his visit to the city that to him, so messy as it was, did not say much: "A living room to which befits the sky as ceiling ". Getting in, especially across the side opposite to the basilica, always gives a special feeling, you know, of stunning wonder and of being back home. It didn't seem possible that someone could feel uncomfortable in it, even today that it is often invaded, in whole or in part, by the water of high tides, and that a lout tourism abuses it; or, worse than ever, it is abused by musical manifestations similar to barking, as is the custom.
The square was not born with the current size and shape. An inscription on the floor marks the original limit in length, quite modest: a channel locked it, the rio Batario or Badovario, whose name recalls Badoer, which tradition attributes to one of the first doge dynasties, the one of the Partecipazi or Parteciaci, the founder of which, Agnello, transferred the seat of duke or doge, from Malamocco, marginal Island of the Lagoon to the Adriatic. It was the year 813 after Christ. The doge would be installed in what was a probable Roman castle (other think that he built it). His son Justinian will receive with all the honors, in the year 828, the body of St. Mark Evangelist, stolen in Alexandria of Egypt by two Venetian merchants: as can be seen in the mosaics of the façade of the basilica, founded by Justinian himself to welcome the precious relic.

In the testament of Duke Justinian, written in the year 829, figures a voice that, for the times, appears out of the ordinary: it is mentioned of capitals available "if returned safely from the navigation". Against every medieval custom, the noble Duke had risked major capital in maritime trade, without corroding in any way its prestige.
It was written that the Venetian Doge ennobled the mercatura, in which will be committed in one way or another, for centuries, much of the population. It is about another quote from Napoleon, the only other expression of interest for the Sea Queen dethroned by him: "This country is a phenomenon of the commerce power".

THE CHARM OF THE MOSAIC
The immediate impression that you feel entering the Basilica of San Marco is the amazement, much more intense if you enter at dusk, when the sacred rites have ended and, in the mystical silence of the night, the solemn illumination of more than five hundred lamps is switched on, specifically designed to illuminate, with white light that does not alter the colors of the mosaics, the splendid mosaic’s glitter mantle.
Certainly the unusual architecture, with its succession of arches, domes and vaults, produces a fascinating suggestion, but it is above all the splendor of the mosaics of gold, which from the light receive reflections and radiate light and colour, which affect the eye arousing an admired astonishment.
A prodigious mantle of over eight thousand square meters of surface that on the walls from a height of 12 metres develops into a sparkling tangle over the matroneums, embracing lodges, squinches, arcades and five magnificent cupolas representing the architectural layout of this basilica, aptly called "the Golden Basilica".
At the beginning byzantine craftsmen were called from Constantinople to Venice to accomplish on the model of the "mother of all churches," as it was called the Constantinople’s Basilica of Santa Sophia, the architectural complex of the Basilica of San Marco, which is articulated in a surprisingly complex manner, but actually with a purity of lines that accentuate its perfection. The Santa Sophia in Constantinople, powerful and massive, stands under one only huge dome; San Marco's Basilica was built with a specific five domes scheme, one central and the other four at the four cardinal points, following the example of another great basilica of Constantinople now destroyed, the Apostoleyon, the Church of the Twelve Apostles.
Four great tetrapod pillars support the central dome, the most beautiful, which depicts the mystery of the Ascension of Jesus into heaven (the "Sensa", as they say in Venetian). And the "Sensa" was for centuries the great feast of the Serenissima Republic during which the doge on his way to the port of San Nicolò di Lido aboard the executive boat, the “Bucintoro”, to perform the rite of the marriage of the sea. From the four pillars starts the theory of arches and vaults on which are grafted the other four domes, resulting in the harmonious development of greek cross spaces with the cross-arm, the transept, which intersects symmetrically and in equal measure with the longitudinal one. As for the architecture, byzantine mosaicists were determined to create the mosaic mantle: already at the times of doge Domenico Selvo (1071-1084) the mosaic decoration was beginning to shine in its initial effulgence.
When in 1094 was celebrated the consecration of the Basilica of San Marco, called "contariniana", given the generous commitment of doge Domenico Contarini, who had begun its construction in 1064, the doge Vitale Falier could justly be proud for having completed a magnificent and beautiful work, that did not have anything to envy to the architectural gems of the Golden Horn of Byzantium: the casket to guard the remains of the Evangelist San Marco was perfectly successful.
THE MOSAIC TECHNIQUE
You wonder why the Venetians have resorted to the mosaic technique to decorate San Marco, neglecting the technique most in use in medieval times and certainly cheaper of the fresco. Actually are not missing fragments of frescoes, which were discovered in 1963 by the proto Ferdinand Forlati and subsequently in
1977 by proto Angelo Scattolin along the south side which at the beginning was to be totally outside, while in the first half of the 14th century it was included in the hall of the Baptistery. But, as you know, the fresco is more perishable than mosaic, destined to last long braving the injury of time. The marble revetment of the lower part of the walls is another splendid element for the wealth of the materials and the sophisticated care in assembling large slabs of greek marble, the proconnesian, cut and put together so
to create everywhere a symmetric design of varying shades of gray, which let imagine a sort of variegated tapestry. The mosaic still remains their most refined work, not only for the vibrant intensity of colors but also for the technique itself, very challenging and valuable. The base element
consists of minute "tiles" or fragments of "cogolo," which
is the heart of the river pebble. Appropriately faceted, it is used to make the light colors. The colorful tiles are cut from glass pastes, specially created in Murano furnaces with ancient techniques that succeed, with the merging of special metals, to get vivid hues and particularly rare as emerald green, the lapis blue, the ruby red. But it is mainly the gold tiles that represent the finest work technique: over an area of vitreous paste a gold leaf is spread, which remains entangled in a thin lining of blown glass, known as "cartellina", which ensures a perfect adhesion of the gold to the glass. The variety of carats of the gold leaf and its processing within the glass envelope becomes into the hands of the mosaic artist, who carves the mosaic tiles, the royal mantle that covers every corner of the ceiling of the basilica.
The mosaic artist, with an amazing skill, has to place the tiles on the specially prepared plaster, as long as it still remains tender and plastic, according to a drawing sketched by himself (sinopia) on the still wet lime. The workers who worked on the mosaics from the beginning until the 10th century, alternating both outside and inside the Basilica, are totally anonymous. The mosaic that for its technical structure has a much more durable resistance to the degradation compared to fresco painting in general and especially in the lagoon city from the very beginning it manifested a frail insecurity that, because of the saltiness and the air humidity, showed up some swelling and blisters in the mosaic surfaces, resulting in widespread tile damages when even in damnifications of large surfaces. This meant that the Venetian Republic commissioned to mosaic workers, originally Byzantine, later Venetian but also from Ravenna, tuscan and roman, the task of restoring the mosaic that was peeling. If at the beginning the work was meticulous restoration of parts, afterwards, especially since the sixteenth century, the artistic taste led to rebuild from scratch the parts, by preparing the "cartoons", i.e. the new scenes, from the most famous painters of an era that was the golden age of Venetian painting. Titian, Tintoretto, Veronese, just to name the most famous ones, left their mark in that work that the mosaic workers, having now wore the dress of fine artisans losing the one of authentic artists, performed creating in the mosaic striking shapes and iridescent colours of painting, in the complete rebuilding of the scenes. The procurators of San Marco de supra, the Venetian judiciary which was entrusted with the care of the basilica, had imposed that, while changing the shape, the themes and subjects elaborated should have kept their original meaning. This has allowed that, even with mutated forms, the message of the mosaics would be kept unchanged over time.
