You have to finalise the file on Trados, and you will automatically get a sdlxliff file, along with the original file format. If the client sent you a project package, you have to create a return package. What version of Trados Studio are you using? You can find a short video here (Trados Studio 2019) to guide you: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-QxkyjtP5zM

If you have always returned a .docx file to your client, I'm sure you know how to use the "Finalize" option, otherwise you couldn't return files in the original format (in this case Word). This will work in many recent versions, including version 2017: 1. Make a copy of your source file. 2. Go to "File" and "Translate Single Document". 3. Open the copy created in step 1. for translating. 4. Go to "File" and click on "Save Target As".

Note: Don't forget to "Finalize" your file after completing your translation:

In addition to what was already mentioned above, you can also get your target sdlxliff file using the following steps: 1. Once you have confirmed your last segment and completed the QA process, press Ctrl+S to save all. 2. Click File, select Advanced Save. 3. Click 'Save Copy As' and browse to where you want to see your target sdlxliff file. Your target sdlxliff file will be generated that you can then send to your client.
