Hi,

This is a Spanish article about the benefits brought by medical interpreters at hospital.

The main one being a shortening of the patient hospital stay. These are the results of an US study :

Thank you Emma + grammar question May 31, 2012

Thanks a lot, Emma.

Very useful to get the English.

May I take this opportunity to ask a question about Spanish grammar ?

I was surprised to read " El trabajo ... acorta las hospitalizaciones". Shouldn't it be ..."acorta a las hospitalizaciones" ?

Is it a "journalistic licence" or am I making a terrible mistake ?

Just curious (as usual).

When to use or not to use the Spanish preposition "a" May 31, 2012

"... acorta las hospitalizaciones" is correct.

The Spanish preposition a is used when the direct object of the verb is a person (or an animal, especially one that is part of the family, or similar), for instance, "matar a una persona".

Otherwise, no preposition is used, for instance: "matar la sed".

Correct grammar May 31, 2012

Hi Catherine,

I know your question was for Emma but in the meantime I thought I could answer it for you. No, the Spanish is correct as is. It is in fact "acorta las hospitalizaciones".

Take care,
Roxanna

P.S.: Well, I see Miguel was taking care of it while I was writing my answer.

Muchas gracias, Miguel y Roxanna !

Thank you for refreshing my memory !

Sometimes, you may have some sudden doubts about things that were clear to you the day before. The strange way our brain works, or doesn't ...

Have a great day

Catherine
