Most of my CPD is done on a daily basis, however some large translation projects I have been doing require me to update and refresh my knowledge about specific topics and I have been studying these informally on my own, mainly through books and published documents: agreements, conventions, etc. Besides that, I’ve attended some summer courses at Nova University in Lisbon, the last one on the formation of neologisms in modern Portuguese. I'd just like to point out for the benefit for English learners here that training is not countable. You cannot talk about "a training" or "trainings" in correct English. Thank you. | | | To reduce income? | Mar 27, 2023 |
I mean, training usually isn't free, is it? My former employer keeps offering me courses because they also maintain a translation school, so when, at the outset of COVID-19, they decided they could no longer afford my services, they still remained confident that I'd be happy to bring them my money. Every time I receive such an offering, I say in my head, "Oh, pleeeease!" (if I said it out loud, it wouldn't sound half as good as what I heard from a charming Filipina girl whom we called Joyka). Also, I'd really like to know if "a training" is correct English ("a training session" is, but what about "a training"? my intutions may fool me, after all) ▲ Collapse

Training on the job is the only thing I need. That I am very sure of after 23 years of translation without having followed any further specialized training (OK, besides one free theoretical introduction to MTPE, which took me 1 hour) or without having attended any seminar, workshop or congress or whatever. Besides that it baffles me that people have time to do all that stuff. Most of the time my days are full, and if they exceptionally are not, I will be happy to do something more relaxing. I understand that people are interested in it, and in some occasions it might be (partially) useful, but if you have a translation degree and are able to offer more than 1 language pair, then experience will teach you everything. ▲ Collapse | | | Not in the last three years, but | Mar 27, 2023 |
Before Covid, I have benefited a lot from one-day seminars and training sessions. One on legal terminology was very beneficial. See more Before Covid, I have benefited a lot from one-day seminars and training sessions. One on legal terminology was very beneficial. The lecturer went through some areas where Danish and English law reach roughly the same conclusions, but from different approaches, and she pointed out where there are differences. She included updates and reforms that had been passed after I took my diploma, and it was very useful to have the material systematically set out, with clusters of concepts and explanations of how they were related. I have attended a number of other seminars and study sessions, and admittedly, not all of them were quite so valuable, but I have always gone home with food for thought and benefits from other people's experience as well as my own. I tell people who do not have degrees in translation that any qualification is a good start. Once you know how to study, you do not need to accumulate diplomas and certificates - and I mean it! However, if a good teacher has arranged the material systematically, it can save time as you study. If there is an opportunity to learn from others - not just the teacher, but other students and colleagues too, then I think it is worth taking time off to attend. Whether it actually increased my income is uncertain, but it made me more confident about taking on assignments and collaborating with good clients. In that way it ensured that I had an income. ▲ Collapse | | | Kay Denney France Local time: 11:09 French to English
I answered no. Does the person asking the question remember how the world turned upside down three years ago? Does the person asking the question remember how the world turned upside down three years ago? I did actually start teaching at translation school in January 2020, so you could actually say I was a specialist trainer. The transition to online teaching in March was a very steep learning curve, and I can safely say that the main takeaway for me was that I hate online teaching. I really don't feel the need to take any courses right now. My business is flourishing and I'm doing more and more of the kind of work that interests me most. I did toy with the idea of doing a course in art history, which would inform that work, but I don't have time. I'm self-taught, I read about art, and I go to exhibitions, so I'm always learning. Recently I went to see the exhibition of an artist whose website I translate, and that was probably much more useful than any course I might attend. She was very touched that I went, and we had a good long chat together, so it was good in terms of client relations too. Similarly, my musician clients always invite me to their concerts when they have dates in Paris, and being able to chat with them after the show often proves very useful in terms of getting to know the client. The better you know them, the better you can translate for them. ▲ Collapse
I did a lot of courses offered for free from TransLegal during Covid- there was no work then so I took the opportunity to do them. Though I mainly translate into Maltese, it was still a worthwhile opportunity getting to kn ow which language is used exactly for what. Now, I only have time for an hour of training sessions, mostly done online.

At the beginning of my career, I did a lot of self-study apart from translation proper. However, as the years wore on, I realized that I could gain experience from just looking up the terminology I was unaware of. That in itself taught me what I needed to know, and what I didn't know, I researched in greater detail. Since I am a Proz Plus member, I peruse the training videos from time to time, although I prefer the ones offered by native speakers of English.
I took a qualification in renewable energy that I've wanted to do for a long time. Covid gave me the time to take it on as everything else stopped for a while. | | | Hello, I have done some free courses on the medical area that I like a Lot to do. | Mar 27, 2023 |

Soon I will be sitting for the "Certified Hedge Fund Professional Level 2" exam; and come June, I will be spending several weeks at a Financial Modeling Boot Camp. It's a dog-eat-dog world. If you don't skill up, you will be flushed down the toilet (oh, sorry, the loo). | | | To report site rules violations or get help, contact a site moderator: You can also contact site staff by submitting a support request » Poll: Have you undertaken a specialised training in the last 3 years to increase income?
