I don't use a picture | Jul 21, 2021 |
I don’t have a photo on my profile, I have a logo. BPT started life in 1985 in Brussels as a small translator’s cooperative. In 2016 I decided to move back to Lisbon for family reasons and we are no longer a cooperative. Now we are just two, I’m the “front of the house” and my associate deals with the “back of the house”. I still use the same logo as it appears in many places: business cards, website, invoices, letterhead, and envelopes. I don’t think a different logo or a good photograph would get us more work. That's not why clients come to us. I must say also that on the few occasions I have outsourced work to other translators I have been more interested in their qualifications to do the job than in their appearance. ▲ Collapse
Apparently I asked this question... well it will have been at least 3 or 4 years ago if not quite a lot more. And those were certainly not the options I would have offered (I am advised that there have been some changes applied). I am sure I would have said something about whether we thought our photo looked professional, and why. Or whether using a photo at all was a good idea.
To look professional | Jul 21, 2021 |
I use this recent selfie because it’s important to make a good impression.

I chose my avatar because I find it amusing, and it is translation-related. If it cheers up people when they see it, that's a bonus.

I don't have many photos to choose from. This is the only one which shows my face, makes me look both good and professional and wasn't taken 10 or more years ago. I will update it eventually to match my age, but for now it can stay.

I suffer from a severe case of BRF, or bitchy resting face, which makes me look like the late Grumpy Cat – https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grumpy_Cat – but without the cute feline factor. Therefore, in order not the scare the living daylights out of anyone, I went for this typical Dutch landscape photo.

I meant it's unusual to see me smiling in a photograph because I hate being photographed. I have the equivalent of P L Persio's bitchy face - but on a man. What would that be called?
