Because I charge direct clients a minimum of .22 cents a word and I wouldn't want them to see my (lower) rate for agencies.

I have stated my rates on my profile here - it seems logical to me to do so, but I doubt much notice is taken. As meanwhile, I was just asked to quote my 'crisis rate' for a project - what does that mean?

My rates are variable: the rate I charge for an embolectomy catheter instructions is not the same as for a gastronomy article, for obvious reasons. So, each job is quoted on a case by case basis.

I have the same policy, and my rates are quoted in three bands, depending on the kind of text, and the band for the most difficult kinds of texts has a range of rates rather than a single rate. Even so, this gives potential clients a fair idea of my charging policy.

As others have already stated, we offer translation for a wide variety of markets and price ranges. I'm not going to charge a person that sends me their immigration paperwork the same price that I charge a company.

The market or markets in which I decide to work determine my fees and rates, with a little upward nudge on my part. But I never publish those fees or rates because I negotiate on a per-project and per-client basis.
Why? Because I strive to build a business relationship with each client, which calls for confidential negotiations of rates.

I publish the range of my higher rates for direct clients on my ProZ page but not on my website. I think it's a good policy to show people the rates I can command. Then if I give them a break, they'll be happy. I mainly work for direct clients (mostly international organizations, whose rates are dictated by broad negotiations for the entire United Nations system and/or a complex formula).

Because I learned that new customers tend to push you into accepting your lowest possible rate even though the material calls for a higher rate.
