I take it this poll is referring to agency PMs who treat their translators as though they were desperate scavengers who have merely had the good fortune to be blessed with a kind and generous (pfff) offer of paid work, whereupon we should prostrate ourselves before them and kiss their regal feet. I have in the past been guilty of meekly succumbing to these power-trippers but never again. Cheers Simon

Hi Friends, I always feel that the end reader, for whom translation is meant, is my boss. Because, I need to make the translation in such a manner, that it accomodates everything of original text and try to make it interesting as much as possible. The client ... or maybe Hacienda... | | | Thayenga Germany Local time: 21:38 Member (2009) English to German + ... Definitely no! | Mar 6, 2011 |
I had a boss for nearly 2 decades. We did get along very well, almost like professional "equals". But but still .. enough is enough. The only boss-like one might be the customer. But that's a different story. Happy Sunday.

Or on second thought, make that a "yes". I have the toughest boss I could ever have, I see him in the mirror every morning. But he is the only one who can tell me what to do, no one else. My clients ask me what I can do for them, I tell them and then I go on to exceed their expectations; that is what the boss makes me do. But the boss also lets me live life my way. | | | Thayenga Germany Local time: 21:38 Member (2009) English to German + ... What's left to say? | Mar 6, 2011 |

I have been heard to say on occasion that I "would never work for a boss like me". Having said that, I do not believe I was ever as hard on any subordinates in the workplace as I am on myself, endless cups of coffee notwithstanding. | |

where should they come from? | | | Each client becomes a temporary boss | Mar 8, 2011 |
I'd like so much to say that I am my own boss, but once I start working on a job, the client definitely becomes my "boss". I become very sensitive to whatever is asked for. Just last week I was already working for a client and let myself be talked into accepting an extra 6,500 words to do in two days. I didn't know how to say "no". Actually, the 6,500 was less than what they asked me to take; I did talk them down. But it was a tricky text, and I ended up working through the night.... This may be a hangover from working more than 30 years for bosses in offices. ▲ Collapse | | | To report site rules violations or get help, contact a site moderator: You can also contact site staff by submitting a support request » Poll: As a freelancer, do you ever feel that you do have a boss?
