Texto de origem - inglês The Baltimore Symphony Orchestra is wrapping up its regular season this weekend with two debuts - one from inside the ensemble, one from outside. Both are impressive.
Roberto Minczuk, making his first appearance as a BSO guest conductor, revealed considerable gifts Thursday night at Meyerhoff Hall. Concertmaster Jonathan Carney, making his first as a concert soloist with the orchestra, reaffirmed in a big way the value of his hiring.
The Brazilian-born Minczuk, co-artistic director of the São Paulo State Symphony and associate conductor of the New York Philharmonic, did not just provide clarity and confidence. He conveyed unequivocal conviction in every phrase, tapping the color and emotion in a program of familiar and relatively unfamiliar music.
The less-worn items came first, starting with a brief sampling from Brazil's most important composer, Heitor Villa-Lobos, wo isn't given nearly the attention he deserves in this country. The Prelude to his Bacchianas Brasileiras nº 4 provides a rich study in string sonorities. A melancholy-laced melodic line, moving at a stately pace, continually wraps around itself as harmonies shift and lyrical peaks rise and fall. Minczuk shaped the piece lovingly and drew from the BSO strings a lush, fervent tone.
Carl Nielsen, Denmark's most important composer, likewise gets insufficient attention, so the inclusion of this demanding Violin concerto on the program was most welcome. So was the opportunity to hear Carney play the heck out of it.
This may not be the most successful example of concerto writing in the repertoire. Nielson packs a little too much material into the work, which consists of two big halves, each containing the equivalent of two movements. The First half alone is so eventful and ends so boldly that audiences tend, as they did Thursday, to break into sustained applause afterward (some folks even did the standin-O thing here). Carney gently broke the news that there was more to come.
Even if there are some structural problems and even if a few of Nielsen's thematic ideas don't linger in the ear, the concerto has much to offer. The contrast of introvert and extrovert passages, the occasional touch of folksy tunes, the ever-vivid orchestration and, above all, the striking beauty, character and complexity of the violin part make a fascinating package.
With a juicy tone, exceptional accuracy and unfailingly communicative phrasing, Carney had the music soaring. It was a classy performance, one that many a full-time soloist would envy. Minczuk provided seemingly effortless support; the concertmaster's colleagues did bright, cohesive playing.
The conductor delved into the internal drama of Schubert's Unfinished Symphony and had it unfolding with considerable power. The strings, in particular, responded warmly to his detailed, yet unfussy, and always poetic approach.
To close, Minczuk grabbed one of Liszt's warhorses," Les Preludes", and had it charging in high style. Here and there, a little more breadth of phrasing would have been effective, though the conductor's knowing way of building toward climactic points certainly paid off. With few exceptions (and those in the wind sections), the BSO percolated nicely to cap a concert - and a season - in style.

Robert Minczuk, der seinen ersten Auftritt als Gastdirigent machte, stellte am Donnerstag abend im Meyerhoff Sall sein erhebliches Talent zur Schau. Konzertmeister Jonathan Carney bestaetigte wiederum den Wert seines Engagements als Solist bei seinem ersten Auftritt mit dem Orchester.
Der in Brasilien geborene Minczuk, der zweite kuenstlerische Direktor des Symphonieorchesters des São Paulo Staates und ausserordentlicher Dirigent der New Yorker Philharmonie uebermittelte nicht nur Klarheit und Vertrauen. Er zeigte bei jeder Satzeinteilung eine unmissverstaendliche Ueberzeugung, und stellte Farbe und Emotionen in einem Programm bekannter und auch weniger bekannter Musik voll heraus.
Die weniger oft gespielten Stuecke kamen zuerst, beginnend mit einer kurzen Auswahl des bedeutendsten brasilianischen Komponisten Heitor Villa-Lobos, der in diesem Lande nicht mit der ihm zustehenden Anerkennung gewuerdigt wird. Das Vorspiel zu seinen "Bacchianas Brasileiras nº 4" stellt in einer reichen Studie die Klangfuelle der Saiteninstrumente vor. Eine melancholisch gefaerbte Melodienfolge in majestaetischem Rhytmus, die in staendigem Wechsel steigender und fallender Harmonien und lyrischer Hoehepunkte um sich eslbst wirbelt. Minczuk gestaltete dieses Stueck liebevoll und entlockte den Saiten des BSO einen ueppigen, hingebungsvollen Ton.
Carl Nielsen, der bedeutendste daenische Komponist, der hier ebenfalls nur ungenuegende Aufmerksamkeit erhaelt weshalb die Aufnahme seines Violinkonzertes im Programm besonders willkommen war. Ebenso die Gelegenheit, Carney zu hoeren, der aus diesem Stueck das Beste herausholte.
Es ist vielleicht nicht das erfolgreichste Beispiel eines Konzertstueckes im Repertoire. Nielsen packt ein bisschen zu viel Material in dieses Werk, das aus zwei grossen Haelften besteht, von denen jede zwei Saetze umfasst. Die erste Haelfte allein ist schon so ereignisreich und endet so ploetzlich, dass das Publikum dazu neigt - was es am Donnerstag auch tat - in unhaltbaren Applaus auszubrechen (einige Personen standen an diesem Punkt sogar zu Ovationen auf). Carney wies aber freundlich darauf hin, dass noch mehr zu hoeren kaeme.
Selbst wenn es hier einige strukturelle Probleme gibt, und selbst wenn einige von Nielsen's thematischen Ideen nicht ins Ohr klingen, hat das Konzert viel zu bieten. Der Kontrast zwischen verinnerlichten und veraeusserlichten Passagen, die gelegentliche Anlehnung an volkstuemliche Toene, eine immer frische, lebhafte Orchestrierung und vor allem die beachtliche Schoenheit, Charakter und Schwierigkeit der Geigenpartitur formen ein faszinierendes Ganzes.
Mit einem saftigen Ton, Exaktheit und einer unfehlbar kommunikativen Einteilung der Saetze liess Carney die Musik fast in der Luft schweben. Es war eine Auffuehrung von Klasse, eine die viele full-time Solisten beneiden koennten. Minczuk sorgte fuer eine scheinbar muehelose Unterstuetzung und die Kollegen des Konzertmeisters praesentierten ein brilliantes Zusammenspiel.
Der Dirigent tauchte in das verinnerlichte Drama der Unvollendeten Symphonie von Schubert ein und entwickelte diese mit beachtlicher Kraft. Die Saiteninstrumente sprachen ganz speziell war auf seine detaillierte, jedoch nicht umstanedliche und immer poetische Interpretation an.
Zum Schluss sicherte sich Minczuk eines der Meisterstuecke von Liszt: "Les Preludes" und fuehrte es in grossem Stil vor. Hin und wieder waeren vielleicht etwas groessere Absaetze zwischen den Saetzen wirkungsvoller gewesen, obwohl die Vertrautheit des Dirigenten, auf gekonnte Weise Hoehepunkte herauszustellen, ueberraschte. Mit einigen Ausnahmen (und diese bei den Blasinstrumenten) brachte die BSO eine schoene Auffuehrung um ein Konzert - und eine Saison - stilvoll abzuschliessen.

Este é a primeira vez que a Orquestra Sinfônica do Estado de São Paulo - OSESP - deixa o seu continente para apresentar-se na Europa.
Uma importante reestruturação efetuada em 1997 transformou a Osesp, uma orquestra com 50 anos de idade, no mais importante grupo sinfônico da América Latina e num conjunto respeitado internacionalmente por sua qualidade intrínseca e pelo alcance do projeto do qual faz parte.
Com sede na Sala São Paulo, especialmente restaurada e adaptada para se transformar num dos grandes espaços sinfônicos do mundo, a Oseps toca semanalmente para milhares de assinantes, mais de 100 vezes ao ano.
Um contrato com a gravadora sueca BIS vem oferecendo ao mercado CDs com música brasileira do século XVIII ao XX, recebidos com entusiasmo pela crítica internacional.
Essa primeira incursão na Europa nos levará à Alemanha e também à Suiça, país com o qual tenho ligações íntimas e de longa data.
Tenho grande honra e prazer em apresentar-lhes este que é um dos ícones da produção cultural brasileira.

Es ist dies das erste Mal, dass das Symphonieorchester des brasilianischen Bundesstaates São Paulo - Osesp - seinen Kontinent verlaesst, um sich in Europa vorzustellen.
Eine bedeutende Umstrukturierung im Jahre 1997 hat die Osesp, ein Orchester das bereits seit 50 Jahren besteht, zur bedeutendsten symphonischen Gruppe Lateinamerikas gemacht, welche durch ihre erstaunliche Qualitaet und die Erfuellung der vollen Tragweite eines Projektes, von dem sie ein Teil ist, zu einem international anerkannten Orchester geworden ist.
Die Osesp spielt in ihrem Hauptsitz, der Sala São Paulo, die speziell restauriert und zweckentsprechend veraendert wurde und sich in einen der grossen symphonischen Schauplaetze der Welt verwandelte, woechentlich fuer tausende Abonnenten, mehr als hundert Mal pro Jahr.
Mittels eines Vertrages mit der schwedischen Schallplattenfirma BIS werden dem Makrt Aufnahmen brasilianischer Musik des 18. bis zum 20. Jahrhunderts angeboten, die von der internationalen Kritik mit grossem Enthusiasmus begruesst werden.
Dieser erste Streifzug nach Europ wird uns nach Deutschland und in die Schweiz fuehren, beides Laender zu denen ich eine jahrelange innige Beziehung habe.
Es ist mir eine grosse Ehre und Vergnuegen, Ihnen dieses Orchester, das einen Hoehepunkt der brasilianischen Kulturproduktion darstellt, vorzustellen.

One of my special hobbies is reading and writing. Now that I'm retired from corporate life I am able to enjoy my hobbies even more. I would also like to turn my former "office tasks" - translations (performed according to the needs of the Executive Board of Directors of big companies in Brazil for around 30 years) - into an agreeable and successful pastime (and to also earn some money with it). I am used to translations of all kinds within the car industry and wholesale business, however prefer to work with issues that really interest me. I have been working as translator for the São Paulo State Orchestra (OSESP) on a volunteer basis (as soon as they started with an extensive volunteer program in 2000), particularly with translations for their programs and/or preparation of dossiers for their tournees. Occasionally there are also translations of poems, printed then in the program booklets, which I love to do. It has always been a great pleasure for me to deal with the beauty of words and sensitive insights of great writers and poets, and this is also the reason why I would like to continue working mainly with translations of that kind. However, I am also open to any other translation within the range of translations I have been working with (see specification).
