Britain instituted the policy of forced assimilation, which Canada’s government continued after self-rule began in 1867. This tried to eradicate indigenous peoples as distinct legal, cultural and religious groups. The residential schools were part of that project, which the commission described as “cultural genocide”. Canada eventually abandoned the policy; the constitution enacted in 1982 recognises indigenous rights. | Translation - Korean
영국은 캐나다 정부가 1867년에 자치를 시작한 뒤에 강제 개화 정책을 시행했다. 이 정책으로 원주민들을 철저하게 합법적으로 말살하려고 했다. 그들의 문화와 종교부터 없애기 시작했는데, 기숙학교는 이 정책의 일부분이었다. 진실화해위원회는 이를 “문화적 집단학살” 이라 칭했다. 캐나다는 결국 이 정책을 파기하고, 1982년에 원주민들의 권리를 인정하여 법을 제정했다.

Huong—a pseudonym, to protect her identity—is now 20 years old. She lives in a large bungalow in Lao Cai, which she shares with a dozen women aged between 15 and 24 (an occupant is pictured). They are all survivors of trafficking networks that smuggle girls across the Vietnam-China border, sometimes to be sold as prostitutes but more often as brides. Their house, with its enormous teddy bears and fleet of fuchsia-pink bicycles, is a shelter run by Pacific Links Foundation, an American charity, which helps victims finish their education and cope with their trauma.

후옹이라는 예명은 그녀의 신원을 보호해줬고 그녀는 이제 20살이 되었다. 그녀는 라오까이에 있는 큰 단독주택에서 산다. 단독주택에서 15세에서 24세 사이의 12명 정도 되는 여성과 함께 산다. 그들은 모두 인신매매 지역에서 살아남은 생존자들이다. 그 지역은 베트남과 중국 국경을 가로질러 여성들을 밀수입하는 지역이고 때론 매춘부로 팔려가기도 했지만 신부로 더 자주 팔려갔다. 커다란 곰 인형이 있고 빨리 달릴 수 있는 푸크시아 핑크 색의 자전거가 있는 그녀들의 집은 미국인들의 자선단체인 태평양 링크 재단에서 만든 쉼터다. 그 자선단체는 그들의 교육을 마칠 수 있게, 트라우마에 대처할 수 있게 피해자들을 돕는 곳이다.
