Not a pet hater but.... May 6, 2012

...just not interested in having one.

In the past we did have a couple of budgies (short lived) and a tortoise which sadly fell from the fourth floor balcony ... that was the end, no more pets after that.

Animals have to be fed, vaccinated and generally looked after, which doesn't come free. And they upset your holiday plans, you can't drive from Italy to Scotland with a dog in the car, for example. Nor can you clear off for the week or two and leave the cat/hamster/ge

Nor can you clear off for the week or two and leave the cat/hamster/gerbil/angora rabbit to fend for itself, without relying on friends or neighbours (all in short supply in this town, 'nuff said).

So I'm afraid I have no animal stories or photos to contribute to this poll!

- and I see no reason not to have a poll as light relief, especially on a (wet) bank holiday weekend here in the UK! Like Nicole, I like to see the human side of colleagues/potential outsourcers and I'm very well aware that my dogs keep me sane. My dog-walking time is an opportunity to think - mindfulness, don't they call it nowadays? - and I can guarantee that if a problem (be it personal or professional) is bothering me, a walk with the dogs will go a long way to solving it!

@Nikki: Using the [img] codes didn't seem to work here - not sure why.. sorry, cancel that - mission accomplished. I needed to copy the link location including jpg, not just the address in the web browser. Thanks!

Whoever thinks this question isn't related working conditions doesn't know my dog Snow. She has an important job that relates directly to my productivity: she wakes me up when I start to nod off!!

She and her littermate Sunshine are white, fluffly, about 20 lb each. Snow stays by my side while I'm working, to make sure I stay awake, and Sunshine patrols the perimeter to make sure that strangers don't interrupt my concentration.

One cat May 7, 2012

Dave Bindon wrote:

I love cats but I wouldn't want to own one. Two stints of cat-sitting for friends (for a period of three months when I first moved to Greece, and about 9 months back in the UK) made me realise that cat-ownership is not for me. It hasn't stopped me loving them (I stroke cats when I see them down the street, and I love it when a friend in the UK sends me photos of her pussy); I just don't want to have one in my home.

The hair got on my nerves. Trying to get food out of the fridge whilst balancing on one foot (using the other foot to try to stop the cat from getting in) stopped being funny after a while. The cats' attempts at assisting my typing were not appreciated. The last straw was discovering that the cats were as fond of my plants as I am: since they didn't have access to mice or lizards they'd bring me mouthfuls of my favourite plants as 'trophy' presents.
Dave, that's sad to hear. You know, cats are all different and the behavior you describe is not a fatality, cats can be educated. If you do love them and are stopped only by those factors, I'd suggest you adopt a kitten and educate him/her. Sure, that's a hard time at the beginning with a kitten, but that may be worth the while. Or you could adopt an older cat after knowing his/her habits.
We adopted an old cat without knowing first... She came with the house we bought! We did not have to perform any education, but she's truly a dream cat. She never "types" on the computer, whenever I lift her on my desk, she never steps on the keyboard at all. The only annoying thing is that she sometimes likes to sit right by my side, which prevents me from typing. If I am not too busy, I let her do that for a couple of minutes, but if I am too busy I just take her down to the floor. She never eats any human food and thus doesn't even get close to the fridge. She never hunts anything and lives in peace with all the birds in the garden. I guess that's because she's an elder cat. If you have a young cat, they need activity, and all cats need to eat some greens. So if there were no things they could play with at your place, that's pretty normal that they destroyed your plants, but that's easy to find a workaround by offering them balls or other games.
Hair is only seasonnal and depends on the type of cat, some lose more, some lose less. Again, the workaround is to have an educated cat who lets you comb him/her. My cat loses hair from March to August approximately, but giving her a good combing session every two weeks mostly solves the problem.

I used to be a pet hater May 7, 2012

Not an animal hater, but a pet hater. My neighbor had cats and dogs and her house smelled funny all the time. But then when I moved to an apartment complex, with no reason whatsoever to go outside, I realized that I would soon become a human in a cage. Going out just during weekends, or for shopping wasn't enough for me. I needed more contact with nature (grew up in a farm).

So we adopted Tommy, back then a 9 years old English Spaniel mix and now my best friend and companion. He do

So we adopted Tommy, back then a 9 years old English Spaniel mix and now my best friend and companion. He doesn't smell bad (this was my fear), because I am taking good care of him.

I perfectly understand people who don't want to have pets, because I used to as well, but now I would never want to go back to the old Tommy-less life. He just brings me so much relaxation and joy. And I learn a great deal from him about forgiveness, acceptance, love. Animals love from instinct, we use to overthink every tiny detail.

Now we plan to adopt another dog.

Forgot to mention that I actually got a fun translation project about dog breeds through a dog lovers forum. How great is that!

Dogs help you work better May 7, 2012

Ever sat in front of the screen for hours on end? Not left the house for the last three days?

This used to be a problem for me wil I got a dog. Walkies three times a day. I feel fitter, I meet more people and as a result, I feel that my working hours are more productive than they used to be.

It's funny that Ty Kendall yesterday was completely upset about the yoga question (not related to translating), and now is answering freely about his 40 hens.

PS Yes I do have a cat

Happy translating!

For 13 years I had a cat that looked like Paul's - and I do hope that you don't mind me "using" Lola's photo, Paul -

She was a queen, the owner of everything, including me The only things she didn't do was pay the rent and buy her food. But why should she have bothered? She had her servant for this. I do miss her, though.

Of course I don't mind! She's very cute, isn't she? And she purrs constantly!

He's much bigger than this now, of course - labrador-sized, although he's a Springer/lab cross. Still adorable though. You'll have to fight me for him! This was taken at the boxing day hunt - he was amazed by all the horses and huge foxhounds, hence why I was holding him.

Difference between cats and dogs May 7, 2012

What's the difference between cats and dogs?
Dogs have masters
Cats have staff.

I know it in a little different formulation:

What a dog thinks:
"He feeds me, he strokes me, he takes car of me... He's my god!"

What a cat thinks:
"He feeds me, he strokes me, he takes car of me... I'm his god!"
