PDF OCR X Enterprise Edition 1.7.3 I was looking for OCR software to use on my macbook, and came across this, available from weblite.ca You can download a free version but it can only convert 1 page at a time. The Enterprise Edition costs ONLY $29.99, and it can convert PDF or even jpeg images of text to plain text (txt), which can then be pasted into a word document. I have tried this with a Danish language pack, and it works extremely well. It does a good job of converting even italicized text, and normal text is converted flawlessly. ▲ Collapse | | | | czechinese (X) Czech to English + ...

I use the ABBYY 6 OCR programme, I have a free (but limited) version that was bundled with my printer. I find it very useful indeed, and very effective. The ergonomics are a little awkward with this limited, bundled version (only one page at a time), and if I did much more of this work, I would certainly buy the full version — however, it is a pretty big investment for the relatively small need I have, particularly as this is a service for which it is difficult to charge extra (th... The only thing I find annoying is that it is too clever and creates complex formatting in order to accurately reproduce the source formatting, and this then gets in the way of my downstream editing. I usually have to spend some time just stripping out the formatting before I can even start. I see some other programmes offer options as to just how much formatting is used, and I feel this would probably be a very useful extra feature. ▲ Collapse | | | Jessica Noyes United States Local time: 17:02 Member Spanish to English + ... What about graphics, etc.? | Jun 4, 2010 |
Do any of these programs have a way of dealing with graphics (like seals and logos) or tables, or other special features, so that you can work with the converted files with no trouble? Or will they only convert pages of plain text? Thanks you for your information.

I can't speak for the other programmes, but the ABBY Finereader that I have used extracts seals, signatures, and other graphics as individual graphic elements that you can then either discard, or place in your document. The only snag I have ever encountered is where some graphic element overlaps wanted text — it would be unreasonable, of course, to expect any programme to be able to deal with this situation! Concerning tables, it does handle them reasonably well, but tends I think to format them by padding with spaces, instead of actually creating a proper table. If I were doing a document with a lot of tables, I'd probably try and streamline my global downstream processing right from the outset — ideally, I'd write a macro to deal with it, though unfortunately I don't know how to

Here is an example of how a page from engine installation manual looks like after OCR in ABBYY software:
As it is shown on the section of a screenshot there are following options for OCR A. Keep original layout B. Single column layout (selected) C. Insert images in the recognised file (checked) | | | Jaroslaw Michalak Poland Local time: 23:02 Member (2004) English to Polish SITE LOCALIZER

It is no problem at all - in fact, FineReader handles this situation extremely well. All you have to do is first select the area as picture and then select the text inside it as text box - FineReader gets the picture, blanks out (!) the original text and inserts the extracted text as text objects in Word. This works very well, I have used it extensively for various diagrams, callouts etc.

Thanks, Jabberwock, that's indeed great news! I admit I haven't explored all of ABBYY's extensive features — though I also suspect this may be one of the more sophisticated features that is not available in the 'slimmed-down' free bundled version I have. | | | Jack Doughty United Kingdom Local time: 22:02 Russian to English + ... I understood that pdf files were supposed to offer protection against tampering with the text, but if there are so many ways in which anyone can convert pdf to Word and then back to pdf again, what is the point of pdf? | | | Pages in topic: [1 2] > | To report site rules violations or get help, contact a site moderator: You can also contact site staff by submitting a support request » Pdf to word converter Trados Studio 2022 Freelance | The leading translation software used by over 270,000 translators.
